Some fans in baseball anger me so much with a Win it all or nothing attitudes towards their teams. I cruise another set of forums.... Reds forums, where someone posted a "Thank You Reds for the great season" thread. 2/3'rds of the fans there chided that guy for supporting a team that can't make it past the NLDS (with HF advantage nonetheless!). I mean sure they aren't winning back to back World Series and it's been awhile since they appeared in the NLCS.... but they had a GREAT winning season. They won their division. True their division had the Astros and the Cubs..... but it also has the Cards and the Brew Crew.

A few weeks ago I said with the record the Cards had this year... I'd be happy for a chance to play one game past the regular season. I wouldn't have been upset if the Braves were able to pull of the W.

Now that the Tigers have completed their sweep.... they should hope for NLCS to end soon..... they don't want to have 7 days off like they did in 2006! Although I'm sure they can conjure up some of the magic they had in 84..... swept the ALCS to go on to win the WS.

I see things the same way you do. For the Giants to miss 2011 but then get in the year later, it's a great accomplishment. There were so many naysayers and haters when the Giants failed the year after a WS win.

I hope SF finds their mojo back in the NLCS, but they surpassed my wildest dreams when they did three in a row to salvage NLDS against the Reds. If the Giants lose tonight, they will have to pull off some sort of miracle again and if they do, there won't be as much talk about how invincible the Tigers are.

The Tigers look like they are on a destiny season and they will be hungry but it's no guarantee to win it all.

indeed I hope they do find their mojo back. Not wishing for that miracle come back though ;)

Obviously I'm going to root for the Cards all the way... But I also have to hope that the Tigers aren't so invincible. There is a Detroit fan in the office that is such an awful band wagoner that would make it untenable...lol. He can't hold a decent baseball conversation; its all emotion.... No knowledge of the game.

That swagger is something he will lose if he really gets into the game. This sport, more than any other I can think of, can routinely have a last place team clean the clock out of the league leader. That's what makes baseball so fun.

Who would have thought that the AL league leading Yankees would lose four straight in the ALCS? Just about anything can happen and in postseason, usually something way off the mark happens and smart money loses.

Buh by Wanks.

Classy.

Thank you for proving what we already knew about Cardinals fans.

Really? That's surprising. Moyank - thoughts?

I think if we ask MacNut in a month or two he might have a different opinion.

Those 4 losses in 2004 were the worst 4 in the history of the team. And we are talking about the most historic team in sports. And I'm hard pressed to think of a future scenario that could be worse.

They were up 1 in the 9th in game 4 and the rest was a nightmare. And the fact that it was the Red Sox and they went on to finally win their championship just added salt to the wound.

This series just leaves a bad taste in the mouth because their offense was just so horrible. It was an extremely hard to watch and we're just feeling the effects of it right now. And losing Jeter at the end of Game 2 - and losing it after we came back in the 9th - was just the nail in the coffin. Add in all the crap about A-Rod & the lineup and there really was no chance.

One positive was that our pitching was lights out, and they deserved more from the offense.

I'm already looking forward to next season. Maybe we'll finally get a chance to what Pineda can do. And Phelps showed a lot the second half of the year, so maybe he gets a shot as well. We'll see what they do about Swisher, Ichiro, and some of the fringe guys as well. I'm hoping they get younger (which means NO JOSH HAMILTON) and faster with the guys they choose to fill in some of the gaps.

What I'm not looking forward to is hearing about A-Rod and A-Rod's contract and trading A-Rod over the next few months. I'm already sick of it.

That was my reality in 2011 starting before Spring Training...... What will Pujols and the Cards do........ Indeed annoying.

In all seriousness with all of the resources ($$$) the Yanks have, they won't have a problem being competitive next year and those gaps will be filled with grey ball players.

I'm ready or Theo to fix he Cubs and for the Reds and the Brew Crew to stay healthy! Rise of the NL Central!

lol OK. Because Yankee fans are the epitome of class

Well yeah, I think so. Consider two things:

1) Yankee fans don't pelt you with D batteries like that other New York team
2) Yankee Stadium is the safest place in the South Bronx

:)

Yeah, that's what I thought. 2003 was one of the worst gut punch playoff losses in my memory, and part of it was definitely the opponent.

Right, he's been the forgotten man, but he's supposed to be as talented as any. It will be interesting to see next year.

I'm already sick of it and I'm not even a Yankees fan. :(

Hate. The. Cards.

Yup. It's gotta be Detroit.

Personally, while I'm thrilled the Red Sox have loads of payroll flexibility now, I really hope they don't try and load up too quickly and make some of the same mistakes again. I do trust Ben, and as much as it pains me to say it, I'd rather exercise prudence even if it means we're not showtime ready until 2014.

We've got some interesting kids in the minors, too. And there's pretty much no way (knock on wood) next season will be as lame as this one.

Hate. The. Cards.

Hating the Cards isn't going to help the Brew Crew get back to the Pennant race.

On a serious note.... where do you think Nyjer Morgan's salary is going to end up after arbitration? Looks like you guys might pick up $5+ mil in salaries after arbitration.

---------------------

This A-Rod talk has gotten me thinking.... so obviously his 10 year mega contract deal isn't looking so great from the Yankees perspective right now. Have there been other mega-contracts that one would identify as successful? Meaning they got through the end of their contract (or close to) without folks identifying it as a bust or bad contract.

Derek Jeter certainly pops as a great one in my mind.

63Dot,

Can't say that I'm disappointed in the outcome of that game. Giants are showing some life. The way I see it, the longer we stretch this out.... the more cooled the Tigers' heels will be come Wednesday... compared to the NL team that advances of course.... cough cough Cards :) I love seeing games like this where "old" guys that "have lost it" can go out and pitch one of the best games of their lives.

On that note... knock it off, we are trying to make it back to the World Series doncha know!

Lightning striking twice?

Three in a row from Reds to take NLDS, and one out of three from Cards tonight with last part of NLCS in San Francisco! Hope is back. We just have to play two games as if it were just like taking two regular season games at home. It's good to have winner Vogelsong with our no-hitter guy Cain to follow up (hopefully). Our beard for this year, Romo, seems to be peaking as closer just in time.

But you guys won it more recently! It's been two years since we won it so we are hungrier by a factor of 2.

But the Tigers must be very hungry since the last time they won, Reagan was in his first term, the Soviet Union was in full bore, parachute pants were the rage, and most of the Tigers roster was not even born yet!

I hope you root for SF if we get in. I will root for you if you get in. When I was a kid in my small 1 square mile town, I was in little league and my last place team was the Cardinals. We wore the Cardinals away uniform of grey and Red. The first place little league team, the Giants, were composed of the popular kids and they had a professional college coach and ex-minor league player and several types of uniforms to be mega-cool. We had a part-time auto mechanic as our coach, the only girl pitcher in the league, and we never hit anything. So whenever I see a Cardinals uniform, I feel a certain degree of loyalty. While our small town never made anything of the little league players all grown up, one of the kids in the league a couple of years ahead of me did grow up to be the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals and got a pretty ring last year. (Coach) Mike Aldrete was our hometown hero and it's as if our town won the World Series!

Lol. Easily done. Giants are a likeable team with no Villains..... Although Pence looks crazy enough to be one. Great NL team where all of our players play (we don't need no stinking DH).

Good luck Sunday ;)

Thank you and to you, too.

Both teams have pressure. You are going after a back to back, like what the Yanks did a long time ago ('98-'00, and then some), and we have to prove the worth of our two Cy Young winners (Zito and Lincecum, both bullpen). On some level there are fans who absolutely expect to take it all but besides each other, one of us will have to face what looks like an invincible Tigers team.

If the Giants don't get there, at least Zito and Lincecum got a chance to play in postseason and experience wins, and Vogelsong came into his own, too. He goes against Carpenter today and he's like your own Randy Johnson. Today is a great day to chill out from watching baseball. My guess is either you will take it tomorrow quite convincingly knowing you are best off shutting us down hard, but if you don't the momentum belongs to us at home.

Whatever the outcome of the NLCS, I want the SF pitchers to be on more often and hopefully turn into a pitching dynasty like Texas is becoming and like Atlanta was for so many years. It's not easy, even with the best, to stay on all the time as is the case with the Phillies.

UPDATE: We are now going into Monday (maybe Tuesday since it's Noah's flood here) and a Game 7 and we have our best pitcher on the mound at home. I am not even thinking World Series and Detroit right now, but only thinking that the Cardinals are last years winner and they will be a major threat every inning tomorrow. It's time like these which makes me like baseball more than football, but also makes me like football more than baseball. On lighter note, the SF 49ers won and the finality of a football game and that elegance makes me wish I never got into baseball. These series just give me high blood pressure.

Holy baseball Monday!

With the team that showed up last night, it's a wonder how the Cards got here! Vogy was on last night, man did he punish us!

Tonight I hope it's actually a contest. I want Matheny to pay attention . I want Lohse to pitch as well as he has been. I want the fielders to stop messing up and giving up unearned runs, but most of all, I think more than Beltran should be ready to hit!

Man I love October Baseball!

The thing that makes baseball interesting is even more evident with these two teams. Here you have teams that could shine but also completely lay an egg and there's no telling who will come out. If it's the Cards who were being pounded in World Series but were able to tread water just enough to win avoiding Texas finishing them off, then the Cards will scrape it together win tonight having a full team effort with everyone hitting, and hitting when it counts. If it's the Giants who went off to Cincinnati and beat arguably the best team in the national league on their home turf, then I bet for SF.

The analysts seem to think this one will not have a lot of batting action on either side and will really be a pitcher's game. Both Cain and Lohse are expected to pitch great games. I think 2-1, or 1-0 or something and to non-Cards and non-Giants fans, this will appear to be a boring game. They seem to say maybe a couple of walks and a single here or there and that's all the difference it will take. But if the winner lights their bats on fire and gets 7 or 8 points tonight and blanks the other team out, then I think some will favor them over the seemingly unstoppable Tigers.

Lol.... That team hasn't shown yet. But there is still hope, we had such a deficit in the NLDS game 5.

There are only so many times you can go to the well....

It's one thing to overcome a team jumping on you early - but add physical and mental errors - it looks like the whole is just too deep.

Indeed. It's deep right now. I'm still hopeful for a rally :D.

Truth is the Cards have just had a poor showing for three games in a row now. Wish Matheny would have gone for broke in game 5.

typical smug cardinal fan comment :p jp

I look at it as a playful jab at someone dancing on my teams grave.

No worries though, if this is where it ends for Cardinal nation, it's still been a great season. Attendance was high all season, played meaningful baseball in September, and we played more than one game past Oct 3. Oh and we proved we're a post season threat without Albert.
