Final rankings:

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Michigan St.
  4. Oklahoma
Nothing too surprising here. We get a Clemson/Oklahoma re-match, and we get Alabama/Michigan State - teacher vs. the student. Both are going to be excellent games on New Years Eve!

Initial prediction?

I'm going with Oklahoma over Clemson and Michigan State somehow pulling off an upset against Alabama.

Orange Bowl: Oklahoma over Clemson.
Cotton Bowl: Alabama over Michigan State.

Oklahoma is playing extremely well, better than the other 3. I can't get myself to pick against Nick Saban when he has 2 weeks to prepare for an opponent even if they only have defense to rely on.

#gloating now

Nothing much to gloat over, utah dropped the ball 2nd half of the season. It's not as though your prediction came true.

Utah would have gotten in as an undefeated, without a doubt. Probably even with a single loss.

But they had 3 losses, if that makes you feel the need to gloat about being right, then I suppose you should go right ahead.

Wouldn't have made it in over the 4 teams there now.

I disagree. They certainly would have.

Let's just assume Utah finished 12-1 meaning they won the Pac-12. Let's also assume the final rankings:

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Michigan State
  4. Oklahoma
Assuming that last weekend's results are the same with the only difference being Utah winning the Pac-12 finishing 12-1, where do you see Utah being ranked? Clemson and Alabama are locks, so you have either the 3 or 4 spot but once Oklahoma won the Big 12, they were in despite not having a championship game. So really, there's only one spot for:

  • Big 10 champion (Michigan State/Iowa)
  • Ohio State
  • Pac-12 champion (Utah)
If Iowa went undefeated, there was no way Utah would jump them. They wouldn't even have jumped the loser of the Big 10 championship.

I said it when the first CFP rankings were released, the only way Utah makes the final four is if everyone in front of them crumbled and lost 2 or more games. If Utah had an identical record, they would be looked over. A 12-1 Utah team is not jumping a (13-0) Clemson, (12-1) Alabama, (12-1) Michigan State/(13-0) Iowa or a (11-1) Oklahoma. It's just not happening.
