And would you believe that Finland lead France 2-0!!!

And in news from the clash of the giants:
An Aldershot Town player has scored a goal on his international debut today. Mo Bettamer has put Libya 2-1 up against Equatorial Guinea.

England vs Ireland about to kick off.
I'm somewhat torn, as despite being born in England, I am half Irish and will always have a soft spot for the Republic of Ireland football team.
That said, I identify as a New Zealander, so only support either team when the All Whites are not playing...which is most of the time.

Norway - Israel was cancelled a few hours before kickoff yesterday. I feel that was the right decision...

Israel FA apparently didn't and are threatening to sue the Norwegian FA for €85.000
I presume that won't go anywhere, but it's so silly.

Is it really justifiable to risk even one single COVID infection for an England-Republic of Ireland friendly? The chances of it being a compelling game of football are....not good, and it has virtually zero competitive implications.

I'm sooooooo happy Gomez blew out his knee training for this. Definitely completely worth it. :D:D

Ditto the USA - Wales match. I suppose with the USA you can argue the team is in greater need of minutes training and playing together, but it's still not justifiable under the circumstances IMO.

Could've been worse...that game was originally scheduled to be against NZ...even less reason to play as we are ranked about 46,000th in the world (we only play when there's a world cup on).
I've been watching the Bledisloe cup...Southern hemisphere rugby union, especially in NZ, is the BEST sport on in the world at the moment. Crowds in stadiums too!

Compared with that, the England - Ireland friendly was as much fun as accidentally slamming a finger in a car door...though less exciting.

Yeah, there really isn't any substitute for a packed stadium and we are INCREDIBLY LUCKY to have managed COVID in the way we have.
A full stadium is a dream that's a long way away for many countries around the world right now.

eh

yeah.

I went to the last regular season home game for Nashville SC last week and it was pretty cool being in an almost, mostly, empty stadium. I want to say there were about 1,200 people there.

Big crowds are cool too though...

...also - how does Maguire get the captaincy of England? I don't understand it. I don't understand him being the skipper at Utd either.

A very good question, and one to which I do not have an answer.

Why are we even playing international football right now? Madness. (Money, actually, but, you know...)

Agree 100% (as @Apple fanboy has already said); internationals are bad enough - and unnecessary, at the moment, to my mind, but I cannot see any reason whatsoever which justifies friendlies. A waste of time, resources and money, just now.
I completely agree - in the current medical climate, why would you risk it? Especially for friendlies...
Agree completely.

Looks like one of the Republic of Ireland players that played 90 minutes yesterday had COVID.

Liverpool cannot seem to get a break.

As an Everton fan I should feel a bit schadenfreude, but I honestly just feel sad...

It's proving impossible to maintain tight enough control over players' movements. It's hard to to be too angry at Salah for not wanting to miss such an important personal occasion. But it's an unacceptable risk in my book, and he should never have been traveling for any reason in the first place.

Between COVID and the increased injuries the disruption to the squad is incredible. International football just makes NO SENSE right now at all. But football cannot and will not change.

Does a player have to end up in intensive care, or worse, for this to be looked at more carefully?

Big crowds are cool too though...
Watching NZ rugby right now is like having a time machine to the pre (and, hopefully, post) pandemic world. I don't hate the empty stadiums as much as some, but seeing a stadium full of people just looks and feels right.

There is quite an interesting double standard we've been seeing this year. The common man travels and he is shunned for spreading the virus, then a bunch of rich sports players travel crammed together and the public overlooks it completely... Too much money involved and too many people that love sports enough to give them a free pass.

Perhaps this has to do with why college sports (at least here in North America) have started much later than their national leagues. Less money involved and less hype.

Finished up the AppleTV "Long Way Up" series today.

I've been following Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGregor's motorcycle treks around the world for almost fifteen years now. And I've been thrilled that they finished up the trilogy (and it has to be watched as a trilogy) with their journey from the tip of South America to Los Angeles.

Interesting:

1) Fun to see the people involved over a decade and a half. Charlie and Ewan age, as do their cameraman, director and producer. Ewan McGregor went through a divorce a year or so before Long Way Up. Not addressed, directly, in the series. But the pain is there. Plus side, we see a face we hadn't seen since the first series, suddenly re-appearing in a much more personal role.

2) They made it much, much harder on themselves by going with electric bikes. I'm glad they did, and I think they and the producers, did us all a service by doing so.

3) A little disappointed by the last episode. They ended up putting the bikes on a bus for most of the miles through Mexico, and the electric support vehicles (Rivian) didn't even make an appearance. This was a decision based mainly on the risk posed to the expedition posed by Mexican drug cartels. Given that previously these guys had ridden through all of Africa and far-east Asia, this ought to give all of us pause about what has happened to the country immediately to our south.

Watch it if: You love travelogues, done by a couple of guys without too much deep and analytical to say, on the life on the road.

Miss it if: You don't like motorcycles.
What’s this got to do with football?
