They need to compete with competitors. It is only logical for their phone where the environment is much more hostile compared to mp3 players or computers for them to skimp on design for audience.
No offense but that's absurd. Design is what makes Apple products so special. And last I checked, in the "hostile" phone market, Apple is doing just fine, and gaining ground every day.
That said I think these pictures are not of an Apple product.
I'd hate to be the Apple employee to left it at the bar.
The design is just awful. It seems so strange that Apple would go such a route. Nothing aside from the front screams Apple/iPhone to me. The whole thing just looks terrible. I thought Apple might make the iPhone look like the iPad, which would be acceptable. But this is terrible.
Zirconia is pretty tough stuff. Scores an 8 on the Mohs scale. A lot depends on the manufacturing process though.
The device pictured is a BRICK! Is that a "battery release" or pop out keyboard? LOL Totally backwards to be an Apple product. You could practically fit a Mac mini mobo in that thing!
This is just about as funny as Apple's first slide of the iPhone featuring an iPod with a rotary dial on it.
I suspect this is a decoy. Heads have probably already rolled for this leak.
The aluminum case photos from early last week are much more convincing.
We all know how much Apple products cost so I think it's pretty obvious that the back is actually made out of a single piece of polished diamond. Now Apple can truly give Vertu the bird.Mohs is a scale of hardness, not toughness. Being very hard can also mean very brittle which would be very bad for this type of application. Hopefully if they do use glass or ceramic they use something that can withstand being dropped but I suspect they wouldn't do it unless they knew it could endure that.

You guys keep saying how ugly it is, but you never really note why. Apart from the seams, why does it burn your eyes into crispy, shriveled, black balls?
You know what they use to describe the Aluminum unibody Macbook Pros? BRICKS.
They could be using Quartz. I'm not sure how brittle it is but it can handle vibrating quickly without shearing.
