One more thing...

The device pictured is a BRICK! Is that a "battery release" or pop out keyboard? LOL Totally backwards to be an Apple product. You could practically fit a Mac mini mobo in that thing!

This is just about as funny as Apple's first slide of the iPhone featuring an iPod with a rotary dial on it.

I suspect this is a decoy. Heads have probably already rolled for this leak.

The aluminum case photos from early last week are much more convincing.

Removable battery doesn't make sense- movable parts add bulk to the case, and will break off when dropped. From a genius bar perspective they might make sense, but how many times do people bring their phones back for the battery? There is no reason to remove the battery, I've had my iPhone 3G for 2 years and I still get 4+ hours of 3G usage with a day or two standby. With the advancements made in battery life in both the Macbook Pros and iPad when used with unibody enclosures, you can bet it's going to look something like this:

http://news.softpedia.com/newsImage/Unibody-iPhone-is-Made-of-Glass-and-Aluminum-Mockup-2.jpg/

Hopefully they can keep the radio signal strong with the unibody (probably a plastic portion on top). I'm betting at least 6 hours of 3G battery life.

They need to compete with competitors. It is only logical for their phone where the environment is much more hostile compared to mp3 players or computers for them to skimp on design for audience.

No offense but that's absurd. Design is what makes Apple products so special. And last I checked, in the "hostile" phone market, Apple is doing just fine, and gaining ground every day.

That said I think these pictures are not of an Apple product.

I find it amusing how people still think this is fake/originally thought it was fake. And obviously there won;t be a removable battery. This is a prototype, they want to be able to access internals.

It seems very unlikely that Apple will give us a removable battery. For one, it takes up space that could be more battery space, and its not a pretty design. But you never know. They might have found it easier to just make the battery removable so we could stop complaining about it and so we can carry our extra batteries around like it's 1993. It reminds me of when Sidekick finally put a removable battery on the sidekick3. I was super happy because when my sidekick froze up and it wouldn't even shut off when I tried all the other "soft" tricks, I could just take the battery out to restart it. That probably isn't the case here, though. Who has an iPhone that does that? Mine never has. Also, while I believe these images ARE REAL, they are images of a PROTOTYPE. That means the final version will be very polished. The lack of Apple trying to take these photos down just means it's the weekend. They were notified late, the lawyers didn't want to pick up their phones while Steve was furiously trying to reach them, and now that everyone's seen it, might as well leave it up and hope they still think it's fake because we haven't sent any legal notices.

Oh, and does anyone remember the Chinese guy that committed suicide when he lost an iPhone 4g prototype and was tortured? What if this is the phone?! Lol nah... I'm excited for June.

Agreed. Apple sets the bar... This tester enclosure, doesn't come close, to being more than a testing enclosure...

Apple would be shooting themselves if this was thew design that went to market.

I'd hate to be the Apple employee to left it at the bar.

do you really think that a field test unit would be in the hands of someone that would leave it anywhere. Apple requires a NDA over the issue of whether Jobs farts and if they smell for pity sake. Any tests are being done by those the company 100% trusts not to show it to folks, leave it around etc.

and that phone is ugly. way ugly. no way would that be the final design. Jobs would ***** at how ugly it is.

The design is just awful. It seems so strange that Apple would go such a route. Nothing aside from the front screams Apple/iPhone to me. The whole thing just looks terrible. I thought Apple might make the iPhone look like the iPad, which would be acceptable. But this is terrible.

You guys keep saying how ugly it is, but you never really note why. Apart from the seams, why does it burn your eyes into crispy, shriveled, black balls?

Zirconia is pretty tough stuff. Scores an 8 on the Mohs scale. A lot depends on the manufacturing process though.

Mohs is a scale of hardness, not toughness. Being very hard can also mean very brittle which would be very bad for this type of application. Hopefully if they do use glass or ceramic they use something that can withstand being dropped but I suspect they wouldn't do it unless they knew it could endure that.

Still calling it a fake! No chance of a removable battery. Only apple make the battery and it means there is ANOTHER thing that can go wrong with the phone. No chance!

Real? I dunno...

Seems like lots of folks want this to be real. And a glass surface on the back? Why would that be there, unless to function as a track/glass pad like magic mouse, but then that defats purpose of touch screen kinda. I don't know, design looks good (if real), but seems like has too many buttons and removable parts, and till now Apple has done everything to limit access to battery in their phones and laptops. This is almost like a step back.

But definitely looking forward to getting one when it comes. Will sell my iPhone White 3GS by then, any buyers? LOL

You people are SO irritating. "brick, brick, brick, BRICK"!!! Stop using that word already. You know what they use to describe the Aluminum unibody Macbook Pros? BRICKS. That's not a bad thing >.>

Those aluminum case photos were unrealistic.

We all know how much Apple products cost so I think it's pretty obvious that the back is actually made out of a single piece of polished diamond. Now Apple can truly give Vertu the bird.

They could be using Quartz. I'm not sure how brittle it is but it can handle vibrating quickly without shearing.

True, but there are toughening processes for materials just like this that would considerably increase the amount of energy the zirconia glass material would be able to absorb before it experienced failure.

Apple shouldn't sacrifice it's amazing design just so it can have "removable battery". Yes it may be a great feature to add but I'm pretty sure not everyone will buy an additional battery. Just like how my old Macbook is battery replaceable but I have yet to waste an additional 100 dollars for a second battery. Design should come first.

I love your signature by the way...

On the note of Apple design, it has gone from many different trends over the years. The MMD G4 to the G5 come to mind, from candy plastic to industrial aluminum, the aluminum PowerBooks/MacBook Pros to the Unibody MacBooks Pros, and the subtle touches on curves thumb scope etc... The evolution of the iMac as well moving from a semi-sphere to a flat display on pedestal, to the rounded backs www have today... These albeit at times subtle design changes are what puts Apple above the competition. The internals of the iPad have been described as heaven, the internals of the current Mac Pro's over there predessors as well... With Apple it self setting the bar for GORGEOUS products this fails...

With the 3G/S steve was excited at how it felt in his hand... This design is degreasing from what the iPhone has become...

You guys must be stupid. This is obviously not the iphone HD. Why?

Even their laptops don't have removable battery, what do you think iPhone HD will?

It smells of Asian engineering knock off. Just look at the insides of the iPhone vs this:

So no, you guys are just being fooled and the rumor sites and laughing their way to the bank.

You know what they use to describe the Aluminum unibody Macbook Pros? BRICKS.

Not exactly. Bricks refers to the creation of the actual case which is done by taking a brick of aluminum and laser craving out the various openings etc. that way they reduce the seams which could crack and break. A problem with the black/white macbooks of the previous generation.

I still like the idea of using sapphire for both the front and back. :D
