Not exactly. Bricks refers to the creation of the actual case which is done by taking a brick of aluminum and laser craving out the various openings etc. that way they reduce the seams which could crack and break. A problem with the black/white macbooks of the previous generation.

And let's not forget the cube!!!

I agree, this is probably just a preliminary case housing the actual guts of the new iPhone, if it is even an iPhone at all. If this were the design, I think it would be a huge step back for apple. They are all about innovation and setting their products apart with their seemless and sleek exterior. If this were the design, no one would easily be able to distinguish it from the Droid or HTC. The gaudy, circular buttons are exactly what I would expect NOT to see on an apple product. Anyway, this is just my 2 cents. All we can truly do is wait!

I think people concerned about the possibility of a ceramic-based back breaking easier than plastic should check out this video of a bullet-proof ceramic material:
http://ge.geglobalresearch.com/blog/stronger-than-a-speeding-bullet/

Also, many dental restorations are made with porcelain, and can last years of pressure from chewing...which I doubt the back of my iPhone 3G could :p

Pretty cool footage. So essentially its a ceramic fiber reinforced material. I wonder if it'd be beneficial to use a more typical resin/matrix instead of a ceramic matrix, allowing it to flex a tiny bit more.

You guys must be stupid. This is obviously not the iphone HD. Why?

Even their laptops don't have removable battery, what do you think iPhone HD will?

You (and a few others) need to stop assuming that the battery will be user-replaceable. Just because it appears to be easier to remove doesn't mean it is, or that anyone other than a service technician will be replacing it.

A surface which could allow for some sort of control surface might also point to it being something other than plastic. There were rumours circulating that the rear of the phone would have some sort of multitouch capacity...

There will be someone in the news who is shot, but was saved by a ceramic iPhone that stopped the bullet. For an ad, I would have Jobs dressed in a camo turtleneck firing an extreme-looking gun at an iPhone and a slo mo of the bullet bouncing off.

Or, how about an angry AT&T bigwig shooting at a Verizon version...

5 years until iPhone becomes water proof. Seriously. What other features are they gonna be able to add after 5 years?

So no, you guys are just being fooled and the rumor sites and laughing their way to the bank.

The user removable battery is what really pushes me to not believe the hype... The guts may be legit, and even the look - but any thought of user removable replaceable battery is comical...

so are many of the posts here, but I 'degrease'... I mean digress... :p

it would be more like a Version person shooting at steve cause its still att only

I love your signature by the way...

On the note of Apple design, it has gone from many different trends over the years. The MMD G4 to the G5 come to mind, from candy plastic to industrial aluminum, the aluminum PowerBooks/MacBook Pros to the Unibody MacBooks Pros, and the subtle touches on curves thumb scope etc... The evolution of the iMac as well moving from a semi-sphere to a flat display on pedestal, to the rounded backs www have today... These albeit at times subtle design changes are what puts Apple above the competition. The internals of the iPad have been described as heaven, the internals of the current Mac Pro's over there predessors as well... With Apple it self setting the bar for GORGEOUS products this fails...

With the 3G/S steve was excited at how it felt in his hand... This design is degreasing from what the iPhone has become...

Still doesn't do much to explain the hideousness; you're really just talking about the Mac design evolution.

And to me, this phone looks like a chunk of the Macbook Pro with glass on both sides.

The only thing about any of this that would push me towards a fake is this:

It's subtle, but I'd doubt Apple would break the frame like that. If anything, I'd be expecting a frame similar to that of the iPad. Less silver bezel, more screen.

Patience patience people.. We will all likely know within 2 months what the iPhone will look like and function like.

Speculating is cool, but I don't see the point of bashing a device without seeing it in person and using it. This is like the iPad. So many people complained, then they used it and their opinions changed.

Nobody will know FOR SURE until steve goes on stage. :)

If this truely is iPhone 4 (I hope not), then I have a feeling that we will be hearing about it (offically) sooner than Apple had planned. I just think it looks too- like everything else. I am will to sacrifice some functionality for sleekness (ie. having no flash but a nice and uniform back)

Dig the idea, hate the design. I'm totally digging the 3GS back, not these new photos. I've been waiting to buy an iPhone 4G, but if they look like this I'll buy the 3GS

Josh topolsky was on TUAW today and said that those breaks MIGHT serve as antennas based on what he's heard. Who knows though.

Tell that to Rolex,Panerai, Sinn, IWC, etc etc. It may not be right for an iPhone but it sure would be fun. :D

Sapphire's scratch proof-ness is second to only diamond, but fused quartz-silica would be better for the iPhone.

I would probably not use clear sapphire for a watch face personally, because my watches go through lots of temperature abuse. But premium watch makers like money. My Granddad own a Rolex, its a nice watch. But it costs more than my University fess put together.

This was an Apple product (Titanium Powerbook).

Look: a "gaudy, circular button"!

Actually, the whole design of this iPhone prototype reminds me of the Titanium Powerbook, which is in my opinion a good thing. I think it fits perfectly with Apple's minimalist approach to design.

I think that the curved chrome bezel and back of the current iPhone is a tired design. I like it, but it's soooo 2008 :)

You think apple cares if its breakable. They would love you to break it. So you can spend another 70 buck on a new back. Like all the people that have broke there POS Ipads already.

The iPhone DEFINITELY needs a removable battery! The battery life is HORRIBLE. If they can't make it much better, then a removable battery is the way to go! This will cut down on A LOT of complaints, because very heavy users can carry an extra battery or two with them!
