The Beatles Appear in iTunes Store

All of the whiners in this thread are displaying the same kind of hysteria that the Beatles' fans displayed when they came to America, only in the negative. Almost 50 years later, and some things about young people never change!

....and why is that?

Lots of reasons. Some want instant gratification. Some don't live near a Best Buy. Some don't want a bunch of unused packaging lying around. Some don't want to deal with ripping CDs or don't know how. Some don't have or don't use a CD player and just want digital files directly loaded to their iPods.

The list goes on and on. Every consumer has different circumstances and habits. It's a huge mistake to think that because you behave in a certain way, everyone behaves in the same way. As someone who's worked in advertising for nearly two decades I see this in action every day of the week.

To all of those saying there wasn't a lot of hype generated by Apple:

A multi-million dollar company dedicating the entire front page of their web site to advertise a "day you'll never forget" is a LOT of hype. Think of how many millions of hits that page gets every day. It's easy to say, "it's just a silly graphic on their front page," but it just doesn't work that way.

They also put Gregory Hines up on their front page in tribute the day he died. Was that for hype. Granted, they weren't selling anything of his, nor did they say, hey come back tomorrow to see this, but then again, they didn't exactly know he was going to die the day before he did, nor would that have been in very good taste. Just don't think they haven't dedicated their home page to a single individual before, because they have.

Also, while lossless would be nice, not only do I not have the hard disk space for it, I also lack the audio equipment needed to appreciate it. 256kbps - 320kbps is fine for me.

If it was an option available for those that do, for an additional 20-30%, would it bother you?

Not what I'm saying, but I see you just did the exact same thing again: assuming that your habits and ways of looking at things are universal. Wrong.

tell me how this is news? it's not like apple was the 1st to get the beatles music and it is NOW just being released to the public. it's been out on cd for awhile.

Because now able to buy individual songs. Some people don't want the full album. It's not huge news but it's definitely a thumbs up.

i believe the year is 2010. if someone is such a huge fan of something they will buy it when it's available immediately on cd. again, it's 2010, most people shop online where you can buy it from amazon.com

there is a reason why it's received such negative comments. again, it's non-news.

Id say 99% of the negatives are because of a very lack luster event, people were excepting more not because it's The Beatles. The more music the merrier in iTunes store.

?? But is wasn't even an event. It was an online promo and then the release. Within a day or two. Not weeks like every big Apple deal. This was a great proper way to do this. It wasn't even a live on stage event with Paul and Ringo. Most people didn't even hear about it. But the will now!!!

Wow... I don't know why I keep reading comments here... It's like looking in the tissue after blowing your nose or watching homosexuals kiss: you know know you'll regret it, but you do it anyways... :D

The box set is $20 more than it is on Amazon.com for the CDs. So.....

Try the Australian Store at $260

With the Australian dollar at parity with the US dollar why are we forced to pay much higher prices for iTunes store content in Australia? Rip off. Also, this is a day that I will never remember. Couldn't be more boring for me.

The funny thing about this is whole “fiasco from the fans” is that this wasn’t an “Event” or “Keynote”....this was a one-day-prior advert on their site and through iTunes.
Was the tag line a bit “over the top”? Yeah somewhat.
Did people “overhype” the entire get-up.....DEFINITELY!!

This was not something Apple touted for weeks/months.
This is something the “fans” made bigger than it ever was.

Does everyone like The Beatles....no.
Are they a great band...yes.
The Beatles (and several other bands over the years eg: Led Zeppelin for Music; Michael Jackson for music and videos) brought many different styles to the for-front of music.
They were hyped and delivered many times. I don’t care for Elvis and his “King of Rock” moniker but that does not mean he was awful. He influenced many musicians and garnered fans worldwide (like the Fab Four).
The Beatles were experimental (in several ways) and this proved to help make hits and duds among their collection. Each band member was able to leave The Beatles and have a second career (or more) with solo/group collaborations.

This is a big deal for Apple...both Apple companies...as they bring a new outlet to get The Beatles tunes. As someone said earlier on here (and many have said over the years) anytime Apple has something to announce, the fans build a mountain out an ant hill and are “let down” with anything Apple ever announces.

Event...no
Announcement...yes
Apple promoting it...yes
people making too much stuff up...yes (as always)

And again, you make the mistake of thinking that all consumers think and act just like you do. That's probably why you don't work in marketing or advertising.

Except that this isn't just ANY tech company, it's Apple. They are notoriously secretive and anytime they DO update the website, no matter how small, it usually gets reported on tech blogs around the globe.

And you, of course, MUST rabidly READ the tech blogs on a daily basis? Because there's going to be a test someday? :)

To imply "a day you'll never forget" for this announcement is just ridiculous.

Don't blame Apple that some people are unable to control their emotions, and allow themselves to get swept up in trivial matters.

Let's review:

Apple doesn't even hold an event, doesn't invite tech journalists and guests, etc. but simply posts some Rohrsach riddle on their website for less than 24 hours that pertains to THEIR iTunes business venture. Less than 10 words, and a graphic of clocks.

Apple is clearly going for understated (e.g. they didn't hold a live broadcast event, didn't have the surviving Beatles play a song, etc). If they really wanted to promote an announcement, don't you think they'd give more than 18 hours notice?

Doesn't matter, though: that's time enough for rabid personalties to build up their hopes ("World Peace!" "End of Hunger worldwide!"), only to have the Evil Apple Inc dash their dreams....

In fact, the disappointment you experience means that in fact you probably WILL remember this day for the rest of your life, as you'll recall the day Apple disappointed you, so it will become ironically TRUE in some cases, as a self-fulfilling prophecy, a loss of personal control.

Maybe some here should take this as a learning experience, an opportunity for personal growth. Apple, and to an even greater degree, YOU, aren't all that important in the big scheme of things. Your doding Mother aside, it's not ALL about you, you know...

I am cool with Apple blowing The whole Beatle launch out of proportion.

The only ones "blowing this out of proportion" are those who apparently have some hole in their life, such that they choose to blame others for all of their perceived insults and disappointments in life, when such disappointment is actually of their own making. Only YOU can determine your reaction to events, no one else.

I am reminded of the words attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt: "No one can make you feel inferior, without your allowing them to do so". (Just goes to show these pearls of wisdom aren't found only in Eastern mysticism: who knew Eleanor was familiar with Buddhist philosophy?).

OMG so stupid!!

Way to go Stevie!! This is so stupid!! I've already pirated all of the beatles. I would NEVER pay for music again.

Same here (as in, my EARS are the audio equipment needed to appreciate it). :p

About "over-hype" anger

All Apple did was replace a graphic on their home page for 24 hours. That's it. How anyone thought the announcement would be anything but something of this relative size and scope is beyond me. It was an announcement. Want to see over-hype? Go read a HuffPost headline.

This is a big deal—by any measure. The #3 album on iTunes right now? The Glee Cast Christmas Album. Most people, and by that I mean nearly everybody, don't know or don't care about bit rates, 90 sec. previews, data centers or cloud computing. They vote for Bristol Palin on DWTS, concern themselves with the size of Katy Perry's breast—which are #2 on iTunes right now—and generally just get on with their lives.

Apple's promo was perfectly appropriate. They are going to sell a lot of Beatles tunes.

I don't know what music you haters listen to, but will anyone be listening to it in 40 years?

Elegant and stylish announcement by Apple. Now, get back Jojo, go home

Apple is the first to get them in digital format and it is news. Go to ANY newspaper Web site and see what they have on their front pages today.
