wow how boring can a company get? Seriously "a day we will never forget" !?
all this hype over some lame announcement HA!

its going downhill with Apple really fast if you ask me...

its official --- Apple lost its "magic" and is yet another boring company trying to brainwash everybody in the name of the mighty $

can't help but feel Apple is starting to look as a ridiculous toy company

they didnt lost the magic completely, because they are still miles better than other companies, but it's true that they get boring, last keynote was also so magicless...

Hey, this is the USA after all. Here, $$$ is god.

However if they think teenagers will suddenly stop listening to Lady Gaga and start buying up music that is forty years old, then you're mistaken.

Some will.

Maybe not huge numbers - but for some it will be an excuse to expose new minds to old music.

And Beatles vs Jackson and Elvis?

I would give it to the fab four on the strength and variety of their canon.
Everything from balls-out rock and roll to avant-garde experimentalism.

Sgt Peppers has a massive variety of styles and influences.

There are better rock and rollers than Elvis - and I would rate Stevie Wonder's back catalogue over Jacko's too.

The Beatles changed music as they went on - and kept changing for the better.

The latter output of neither Jacko nor the King really were massive steps forward in the art.

lol, Apple still thinks it can dictate what people should consider "great news".

The number of negative ratings reflects Apple's arrogance.

What makes you think that everyone who rated this "Negative" hates the Beatles ?
Exactly. I rated it negative because Apple WAY over-hyped their little event. Describing the event as a day that "...you'll never forget" when only announcing that the Beatles have finally gone digital qualifies as exaggeration in my book. For the record, I really like the Beatles and already have their discography in my iTunes library. I ripped it from CD, just like everyone else already has.

Maybe it doesn't matter but I find it amusing that if it weren't for the Beatles, this "computer" company would probably not have been called Apple.

Bingo! Because the Beatles invented the word.

Just be thankful you're not posting that from your Coocoocachoo laptop!

This iTunes delay was mostly due to EMI and not the Beatles.

EMI is in dire straits financially, they had no choice but to do this, they recently lost a court battle with Citigroup, they were the ones holding up this move, not the Fab Four (and their lawyers)...

Shut down the interwebs, this argument is over :D

Seriously what's the big deal. It's not like Apple printed coupons for free handjobs from Steve and then cancelled. They slightly hyped up an announcement what, 24 hours in advance, and it wasn't a giant blockbuster that reinvented the business.

What did you honestly expect?

its not really like we should be expecting something special, look at the last few hyped up announcements they made, straight out pathetic.

and this is exactly the point, theses days Apple hypes just about everything they do, regardless of how stupid it is, it has become boring and old, especially because its most probably going to be just another disappointing thing. i think loads of people are losing interest in this stupid game apple plays...

I think that Apple wasn't the only thing to over-hype it. Sure, a "Day you'll never forget" is over-hyping it, but the blogs & people on these forums saw it and made it even bigger which just made it snowball.

For those who don't understand music...

I wrote this piece back during my college days in the early 2000s. It was for my college newspaper commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' arrival in America. I submit it here for anyone who wants to know what the big deal is about the Beatles...

40 years ago today, a group of 4 charismatic Englishmen touched down at JFK International Airport in New York City and changed the face of the world forever. If that sounds like an exaggeration, it isn't. In fact. to say they simply changed the world is an understatement. The fact is these 4 young lads, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr - together formed the most influential, popular, and successful rock group of all time - The Beatles. In their short 10 year career, they accomplished feats which to this day, no artist or musical group has yet to do. For example, in April of 1964, the Beatles had the top 5 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, an achievement never equaled. They would go on to record timeless classics and further cement their rightful place among rock royalty as the best musical group ever.

But it all began on Sunday night, February 9, 1964 when those 5 now famous words were muttered by Mr. Ed Sullivan, "Ladies and Gentlemen...THE BEATLES!!!" They played 5 songs: "All My Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There, and of course I Want to Hold Your Hand." And so Beatlemania began and the world would never be the same again.

Perhaps I'm biased but I really do believe the Beatles are the best musical group ever. Unlike most musicians today, these guys had talent. They had real, unbelievable, and undeniable talent. They had the uncanny ability to churn out hit after hit, year after year with the greatest of ease it seemed. There is a Beatles song for every spectrum of human emotion. There's a saying that quality is subjective but perfection is absolute. The Beatles were in a word, perfect. To say you don't like groups or artists like OutKast, Justin Timberlake, or any other manufactured (read: fake) artist today is your prerogative. But to say you don't like the Beatles is like saying you don't like to breathe air.

If you even have to ask why the Beatles were and are so great, I'll humor you and answer. Besides the fact that all of their songs are outstanding and have stood the test of time, they did so many things that that are so commonplace in today's society which was unheard of in the 1960's. First of all, the Beatles were the first hugely successful band, period. Of course there were bands before them but none that reached the international scale of success that the Beatles enjoyed. They began what we refer to as pop culture today. The Beatles had long hair; men grew their hair long. Here's a fact: the Beatles became so popular so fast that small clubs couldn't accommodate their audience anymore. Small clubs in the 1960's were the norm for performing venues. But because of their popularity, concert promoters were forced to move the shows to big arenas such as Shea Stadium. Playing at stadiums and arenas is common these days. In fact most artists don't play much anywhere else. But the Beatles did it first. And if you look at the average band today, you usually see a lead vocalist, a guitarist or two, bassist, and a drummer. In the 1950's and early 1960's, nearly all groups consisted of one main frontman (Buddy Holly and Elvis for example) and a few session musicians backing him up. There was never a true collaboration; one guy wrote the songs and another played them. The Beatles changed all of that. Each member contributed to the whole group musically and everyone, even Ringo wrote songs for the group.

I don't think it would be too audacious to say that there will probably never be another group like the Beatles ever again. It makes me really wish I was around during the 60's to experience Beatlemania firsthand.

It's not exactly cheerful :)
Maybe I'm not explaining it correctly because I love The Doors and their music is kind of a downer also at times.

I know what you are saying- love the Doors too. I wouldn't call their music a downer, but dark might be the perfect word. It isn't all about love with cheerful lines and up-beat music. But man, Jim's words will have you thinking- sometimes about love, sometimes death, sometimes even our crappy jobs- "all our lives we sweat and save, building for a shallow grave."

I think all the posts in this thread saying that nobody cares about the Beatles could be taken more seriously if there weren't almost 1300 posts discussing it.

Just sayin'.

"Father? Yes son.. I want to kill you" I'd call that a downer.

I've heard that argument before and it holds no water. The Beatles transcend generations and always have. Sinatra himself said Something was the greatest love song ever written.
You think you're going to be listening to Eminem and other Rap garbage when you're 60 years old?

Ok, not a huge rap fan here. But not all rap is garbage. And Eminem if you listen to it does have some clever rhymes. And there is some trash rap (I have no idea what the artists' names are cause I have only heard some teens playing it really loud and I don't go bother finding music I think is totally talentless hack that the only reason the kids listen to him is cause they can make himself sound tough) but don't paint all rap cause of some crap. Crap rap = the stuff where they are talking about their ho's, they have no rythm at all, they just talk in a low voice usually about their ho's and how tough they are and don't mess with them (but there is no talent in their rap, no cleverness in the words they choose, nothing of real interest at all). Now.. I'd like to see you rap like Eminem (I sure can't.. I'm horrible in that I try to sing along to anything I listen to and I completely fail whenever it comes to trying to rap, I can't keep up with it. Least when they are actually rapping and not just talking tough to a beat in the background. There's a difference).

There's a ton of crap popular music (hey, shoot, I listen to some of it but I wouldn't call it good. Shoot, I have one Kanye West song I listen to and I'll agree that he's definitely not all that good. Just I like the song he uses in the background and it works. But he's not clever, he doesn't really rap all that well and I'll admit his ego tends to turn me off of him even though really it hsould be about the music, not the singer). Should we paint Beatles as crap cause there's a lot of crappy popular stuff?

Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean you can't give credit where credit is due (and just cause you like it doesn't mean it's good either. I fully admit there's some music I listen to that I wouldn't consider good, just I like it *shrug*).

This is truly a day I'll never forget. The day I'm gonna see an Apple announcement generate almost (or hopefully reach) 2000 negatives.

As for the Beatles announcement, it's understandable. It's not large enough to hold an event, but it's not small enough to just make a minor update. A front page change was what I was expecting (note that I do not like the Beatles, but that's mainly cause I've only heard a part of Yellow Submarine and that's pretty much all I know about them).

What makes this big is not because of the fans (they have the songs already) or the haters (they'll never change). It's the people who didn't know or care too much in the past. Before today, I never saw or heard too much of the Beatles. Now with this announcement, it's possible people like me will go to iTunes and check out a couple of their songs.

I wonder how many people will remember Lady Gaga & Justin Bieber 40 years from now. I'll admit, I'm more of an Oldies fan (Beatles, Beach Boys, Barry WHite, etc.) so I don't know all of the new people. But how many of them write their own songs, sing live at their concerts (not lipsync), and aren't just eye candy the music industry finds with a nice voice?

One group I also like is Rockapella. They formed in the late '80s and while none of the original members are left, but they have a number of good tunes. Back when Steve Altman was still in the group, he wrote quite a few songs, or at least arranged them for a cappella. How many famous pop singers/musicians today do that?
