Out of all of this, the only thing I want to know is who finally caved? What were the discussions like between Apple Corps and Apple.

What a bunch of negative haters.
What is with you people.
Even if you don't like them it is a very significant development for Apple.
:p:p:p

Why is posting messages to this (or any forum) discussing the topic of said forum message considered "throwing a hissy fit"? Isn't that what this place is for? Posting opinions and having discussions?

Oh, indeed. And it's that type of hissy fit attitude and democratic conversation that WILL make this day an "unforgettable day". Look how many negative feedback this article has gotten. Look how much ridiculous controversy this promotion from Apple has stirred.

Whether you want to forget this day or not, you most likely won't because of all this hoopla. This is exactly the type of drama Apple is good at stirring up, whether negative or positive.

The more we argue about this, the more this subject stays around, and the less this day will be forgotten :)

Jackson (& Sony Music) own the publishing rights to most of the Beatles songs. This has nothing at all to do with the distribution of the Beatles recordings, which are owned by the Beatles and EMI.

Correct, publishing rights. Nonetheless, you think that he had absolutely no say in how it is distributed? Michael was a Nazi when it came to his music, and with his reputation and influence in the music industry, if he wasn't happy, you honestly think they wouldn't consider his opinions? But this is just speculation.

I don't know the technicalities, certainly I'm no lawyer, but I do know that there were major issues regarding Beatles digital distribution and its a big deal that it has finally happened. Probably that Paul absolutely hates it for no specific reason.

I totally agree. The other point is that yes you could get the CD cheaper at the shops, but some people only like some tracks (like me!!) and dont want to buy the whole album, everyone has different opinions, YES there could of been something else, YES not everyone is happy with it, and YES by all means give your comments on it and how your not keen, but lets move on and just accept this is what Apple have done and get on with debating the future :)

Cannibal Corpse, LOL. ;)

Never listened to them... but I know they are death metal. So I would assume they were influenced by one of the pioneers of metal... Black Sabbath... particularly Ozzy Osbourne. Guess who Ozzy Osbourne's biggest influence was.... yep.

Now it seems Apple is finally believing their own "magical" PR! I guess why not? It's worked for them so well in the past. This is a HUGE let down!

Whatever the reason, I think he should just let his obsession go. Clearly it's time.

Do you know why Steve Jobs has an obsession with the Beatles? Let me go *waaay* out on limb here and suggest, just perhaps, because both he and John Lennon were adopted, both he and John Lennon had a vision of perfection, both he and John Lennon spent some time studying eastern philosophy.

Nah. Forget it, I'm probably just plain wrong.

:p:p:p

How? It's more of a significant development for the owners of Beatles music than Apple. Maybe it makes SJ happy, but long term this really isn't going to pad Apple's bottom line.

Too bad for us you remembered the password. :p

When your password is IHATEAPPLE it's easy to remember because it's more than a password, it's an attitude.

Oh FFS the number of trolls out is ridiculous - must be an overflow from Halloween?

I understand this might be a personal victory for Steve Jobs after all the Apple Corps. situation 30 years ago that he finally wins, but seriously, creating all the anticipation of "Tomorrow is Just another day. That you'll never forget." was a little too much.

Well, of course.

But the commenter specifically mentioned two bands that were directly influenced by the Beatles. Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin are products of the Beatles' legacy. So while he may not like the Beatles, he certainly likes music that was directly influenced by them and that may not have even existed without them. Sure, there would still have been music, but that's another argument. . .

I don't live too far from Robert Plant and I've seen him play a few very low key venues including one at his local village hall doing Beatles, Elvis and Cliff Richard rock & roll covers with a teenage backing band.

Ozzy Osbourne is another local lad made good who claims the Beatles were his biggest influence. I'm not sure you can hear it on Black Sabbath's debut album though. :D

Cannibal Corpse, LOL. ;)

From an interview with CC's drummer:

Savagebutcher: What were some influences that led you to create Cannibal Corpse and what were some of your musical influences?

Paul: Well, I mentioned, some of the bands, we were always fans of heavy metal. Growing up, listening to heavy metal listening to Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest those were the heavy bands of the time and this is when we were at the age of getting into the music. We are all relatively the same age, we are all in our late 30s or early 40s, so you have to think back in '83, Metallica's "Kill Em All", was just off the wall, like we had never heard it before, and that's the direction we went into.

All of their influences were either directly or indirectly influenced by the Beatles.:p

The RDF is broken

Did Apple just "jump the shark"?

Hardly a memorable announcement. I think Apple marketing has run out of ideas. And to use a reference to a non-Beatles song is pretty poor too.

Judging by the massive number of people who haven't been fooled into thinking this is an unforgettable day, I'd say the reality distortion field is seriously broken

But that's just it, they didn't make a fuss. MR did, along with the rest of the news media that saw the announcement. Only 24 hours of an announcement with very little marketing. It's not like we all waited weeks with all sorts of advertising. I'm beginning to hate Macrumors because some people here take the fun out of being here with constant Apple hate and way too much negative energy for no reason and all this sense of entitlement for nothing that they deserve. If you bought into the hype and you're disappointed, it's YOUR FAULT!

Absolutely! My sentiment stated very eloquently, thanks!

I'd Like A Piece Of That...

Ok, so the Beatles doesn't appeal to everyone. Ok. But Jobs has been talking about this for a long time. For him (and Apple) it's a huge win.

Here's the Wiki entry for them on sales:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_The_Beatles'_record_sales

A couple of key lines from it:

"According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Beatles had topped worldwide sales of 300 million units by 1969."

Hmm 1969 - Jobs and my formative years...

"By October 1972, the Beatles’ worldwide sales total stood at 545 million units. To date The Beatles record sales are over 1.3 billion units worldwide."

And really, even if they only do another 5% sales (than the 1.3 billion), what's that times their 30 cents per song? Almost $4M? I'd like a piece of that.

Hey, I'm sure some of those 1.3B customer copies aren't on CD to be ripped into iTunes (available yes, but we have the real vinyl). I've just recently ripped about 50 old/obscure vinyl albums just so I could have them in iTunes/iPod/DNLS streaming...

Haters can go on hating but there's a market for it. And, honestly, we all hang on to every announcement they make - so why not let SJ have a personal (and public) victory. Merry Christmas Steve! (insert lyrics from "Help" here...)

How? It's more of a significant development for the owners of Beatles music than Apple. Maybe it makes SJ happy, but long term this really isn't going to pad Apple's bottom line.

So let me see.....Apple sign up the biggest and most successful band in popular music history to an exclusive deal and it won't result in an increase in their bottom line?
Are you serious.
You might not like them but to make such a stupid statement proves that you and the many other whiners here are just blind haters.
Have a nice day while you stew in your negative little world :D

Jackson's estate and Sony Music each own a 50% share the publishing rights to most of the Beatles songs. This has nothing at all to do with the distribution of the Beatles recordings, which are owned by the Beatles and EMI.
Not totality correct.

Northern Songs owns a majority of the publishing rights to Lennon/McCartney's Beatle songs.

They do not own any of the rights to George Harrison's Beatle songs.

Neither George Harrison and Ringo Starr sold their stock, which at the time was only 1.6%.

Paul McCartney has since bought the rights to their older, pre-Northern Songs songs (including songs like Love Me Do).

You're suggesting his opinion is somehow more valid than anyone else's on the matter. I'm suggesting the guy was strung out for decades to the point that his opinion isn't any more valid than anyone else's. The guy was a brilliant musician, but that doesn't mean he's a brilliant music critic.
