Very true. I started off with Kubuntu in 2006 following a recommendation that it would be a good starting point for a novice. The subsequent journey of trial and error through the years with countless distros led to Linux Mint (with Knoppix as a very close second) becoming my desktop favourite. On the firewall front, my failures with IPCop pushed me towards Smoothwall.

Quite: as is well known from my posts, although I now use Macs predominantly, I do have an air-gapped dedicated WinBox that fulfils one task and thankfully it requires almost zero attention or maintenance.

Which was why as you'll note, I suggested that they install it on a spare machine and stopped there. The rest of the journey would be theirs to take on their own - provided that it's a journey they want to embark upon. :)

Thank you! :D
I jumped in the deep end with Linux, Debian circa 1999. Oi. I had dabbled with A/UX and thought I could handle it. Not. Dapper Drake 6.06 PPC was my first real foray into Tux. Even on a then ancient Bondi Blue iMac G3 it was a respectable performer. Linux Mint was my go to, until is started to suck. MX Linux is my preferred distro these days 'cause it just works and I am getting hella lazy in my old age.

Gave up on Apple and Mac OS after 2011, for the obvious reason. Think history has proved me right. T2 chip anyone?

I started off with Kubuntu in 2006
That brings back memories of me setting up Kubuntu 6.06 (I've always been more of a KDE guy) on my then brand-new Core Duo MacBook and having fun with Compiz's desktop effects that were silly and pointless but totally cool, putting everything else out there to shame. :) That rotating 3D cube when switching virtual desktops. Windows that burned down when you closed them. Etc etc etc.

Why does Linux Mint suck now, in your opinion?

Lucky for some! I had to suffice with a P3 600 Mhz HP Omnibook 6000 and Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Xubuntu never really worked well with the hardware. I was intrigued about Compiz but my GPU wasn't compatible/supported adequately. A slew of problems eventually forced me back to Win2K.

Just my opinion, I had real issues with screen tearing with the last three or four times I've tried to install Mint. Considering I was on a ThinkPenguin machine that allegedly had excellent Linux driver support I was annoyed. Mint had always been my go to, always reliable distro from 2010-2018. I'd fix the tearing usually by editing some obscure config file and break something else. Oh, and sound didn't work, even messing around with every single setting in alsamixer, and deleting the godawful pulseaudio. Installed MX Linux 19, perfect out of the box. Tried Ubuntu 20.04 recently and....perfect out of the box. Tried Focal Fossa Puppy Linux...perfect, out of the box. Tried latest Cinnamon Linux Mint again....no sound, vicious screen tearing, broken package manager...done with the Mint.

Since Linux might be the "workaround way" AmigaPPC (AmigaOne) community is trying to maintain updated G5 class PPC distro named "Fienix" https://fienixppc.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html
With Mac instruction available https://fienixppc.blogspot.com/p/download.html
See its 2019 blog review https://amigax5000.wordpress.com/2019/10/27/fienix/

Downside is, I believe, no classic install, just images that can be DD-ed (expanded using Etcher)

Overall "specs"
Fienix
OS Type: Linux
Parent Distribution: Debian
Architectures: PowerPC (64-bit kernel default)
Repository Type: APT
Repository Address: http://fienix.servehttp.com/repos/fienix/soar/
Package Type: .deb
Desktop Environment: MATE
User Interface: Fienix Customization Layer
Release Schedule: Releases are based on stability, not schedule
License: Mostly free-software; no-charge/copyright software is noted as such

Classilla is based upon which Mozilla browser version? Because I particularly do not like the icons and the splash screen. I was wondering if I could replace them with the default used by Mozilla? I’d need to know which files can be used to change its branding (for aesthetic purposes) and which version of Mozilla it is. I believe it is 1.3.x something.

WaMCom Mozilla 1.3.1. You can get themes from here, as well, in case that helps.

Great! While we’re at it, Classilla already retains the classic Netscape look & feel, just the icons and the splash screen aren’t right to me. I managed to make SeaMonkey look exactly like a Netscape browser for Windows XP, I think it was a modified Orthodox theme, but that was years ago and I do not remember how I did it. The same trick might not work, because SeaMonkey is newer than Classilla.

Edit: By replacing the classic.jar file from the Netscape 7.0.2, Classilla now retains the complete look and feel of Netscape (including the top right icon on screen). I just need to figure out how to replace the splash screen (or disable it) and replace the desktop icon with the Netscape one.

Edit 2: I went as far as changing the theme file and app icon. I cannot change the splash screen or disable it though. Mozilla docs states that for Macintosh builds it has to be recompiled.

True, but they offer continuous development and new versions for free for years, and most of apps like Wayfarer are free. Also one can use it for 30 minutes without registration. I would also like to see price drop, maybe when they release x64 port.

However, 720p playback of YT is demonstrated in Wayfarer on G4 and 1080 is likely to be possible on G5.

Ideally, some skilled MacOS X PPC coders could backport just the browser, since browser team seems to be independent from MorphOS team?

The most skilled MacOS X PPC coder (Wicknix) is already maintaining like six browsers for PPC Linux and OS X. What would be quite helpful is someone can update Tobias Netzel's 2018 Leopard Webkit, but even that is a Herculean task three years on. To paraphrase someone: If it were easy, it would have already been done. Fourth tier unsupported beggars can't be choosers, and we need to be super grateful and get the most out of what we have already.

Possibly. That way out is 80 euros per machine though.

And Morph is ridiculously faster than the $129 Leopard DVD at retail. What's your point, other than wanting something for nothing?

PS--You can even have MorphOS for FREE, but you have to be content with it throttling after 30 minutes or restarting a lot.

Wayfarer - Beneath the morphOS blue Amiga spartan look is exactly more updated webkit.

I can really say MorphOS feels like Ferrari on same hardware, and that is G5 1GB which is almost max for current MOS.
Too bad some MacOS X apps could not be emulated or backported, I would swap 60$ I paid for Leopard for that MOS license :) Looking forward to seeing it going version 4! - hopefully PPC64 multicore also, not only selected AMD64.

While I like MorphOS, i couldn’t find the web browser in it.

Sadly, this will not run on a G5 Quad.

For the 6600 nvidia or all the Ati Radeon cards + FX 4500 ?
Hmm.. no, when I went to their website I didn’t see PowerMac11,2 (dual core models).. not a video card issue, they simply don’t support the Quad or dual core 11,2 series. Asked if it was because of video card - they replied that and also not supported.

Official list includes only FULLY supported machines, BUT My iMac G5 is not fully supported machine, but it works with latest MOS 3.15 :)

Surely, nVIDIA card has to be replaced with Mac ATI

Power Macintosh G5

NVIDIA cards are not supported by MorphOS and would need to be replaced with a suitable Radeon card instead. Special Mac versions of Radeon cards should be used.

DP = Dual Processors (MorphOS only supports using one CPU though)

Here is a list of supported Power Macintosh G5 machines, oldest models first, then ascending in performance:

Also, Dual Boot with MacOS X guide that I find helpful

And what ATI card if any still, to get ?

I suggest reading https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_pl...ic_id=12716&viewmode=flat&sortorder=0&start=0

and posting there to make best choice with already tested cards. Some PC cards work too (cheaper and easier to obtain)

I have two cards that seem to work fine on my PowerMac11,2 G5/2.3GHz:

1) Sapphire X1950Pro (PC BIOS). Photos: card, info

2) Sapphire X1950XT (PC BIOS). Photos: card, info

On Mac BIOS flashed cards, any card with these chips should work:

  • ATI Radeon 8500 LE (R200)
  • ATI Radeon 8500 (R200)
  • ATI Radeon 9000 (RV250)
  • ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (RV250)
  • ATI Radeon 9100 (R200)
  • ATI Radeon 9100 LE (R200)
  • ATI Radeon 9200 SE (RV280)
  • ATI Radeon 9200 (RV280)
  • ATI Radeon 9200 Pro (RV280)
  • ATI Radeon 9250 (RV280)
  • ATI Radeon 9550 Mobility (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon 9650 (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon 9600 XT (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon 9800 (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon 9800 XT (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X600 XT (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X800 XT / Pro (R420) (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1300 (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1300 Pro (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1550 (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1600 (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1600 Pro (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1800 (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1900 GT (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1950 XT (no W3D)
  • ATI Radeon X1950 Pro (no W3D)
  • ATI FireGL X3 (R420) (no W3D)

Also note that MorphOS will see only 1.5GB of RAM even if machine has more. Future editions should enable more, but even if it "sounds little" its much in Amiga world - MorphOS comes from, apps are lighter and much less CPU and memory hungry. Off course, same level of productivity applications does not exist in all areas like in MacOS X, so its best to keep dual boot to use best of both worlds. Read Dual boot manual not to overwrite MacOS X install during MorphOS installation.
