101mph in my 1L 50bhp vw lupo. apparantly this is impossible but this was downhill with a tail wind according to my gps! the speedo said about 110mph.

in my dad's car i did 125mph down the m1 this summer. i had taken a wrong turning when in a convoy with a few friends after getting split up. so i had to kind of shift it as the route they were taking got them about 3 junctions further along. everything was going good till i saw a police car zooming up behind me. heart started racing so slowed down and moved into the middle lane to see it shooting past me! phew!

The biggest difference between a motorcycle and a car is the fact that a motorcycle leans into a corner the way you should and a car tends to lean out.

And that, if you hit something, the donorcycle turns you into road splatter and that car may or may not.

I can't drive... but the 22nd I'm due to apply for my permit! :D

140 mph in 99 Chrysler 300M. Got a ticket at 103 mph 2 days later on my way home from A&M. That ticket sucked. Cost me $500 dollars....lets not talk about the insurance.

I was on a state highway coming back from school one day last semester, doing about 75 (limit is 55, but everyone is at 60+) in the left (of two) lanes. Then, as I was coming up on a school bus (doing about 55), I see a state trooper on the on ramp. Then he comes into my lane behind me  I start praying, and slow down to just a smidge over 55, so I can get past the bus and into the right lane. I finally get into the right lane, and he takes off at about 65-70 (no lights or siren of course  ) with what appeared to be a K-9 unit behind him.

****in' staties

On the road, 130mph on the M1 in a very hot Ford Escort convertible (European model, not US). My present Range Rover P38 Intercooled Turbo 2.5 BMW DIESEL(!) has hit 115mph (downhill!). Feels like 150 in that monster!

However, for my 40th birthday (some time ago now) my wife bought me 20 laps at Brands Hatch in a single seater: now that was fast :D

But it didn't have a speedometer, so I have no idea how fast. Came first, though!

Burst speed (<5 seconds): 95MPH on I-8 in my BMW 330ci (upgraded to 235BHP, 3.0L I-6)
Sustained speed (>5 seconds): 85MPH, same freeway, same car.

Damn cops abound, or Id go faster.

145mph, as fast as my current car will go (downhill). Not fast enough. The feeling is similar to conquering a difficult ridge in adverse conditions, just less exhausting. There is something about conquering things in the physical realm that hasn't been matched using mechanics, yet.

Next time any of you are in San Diego, check this place out. Linkety. I've been there a few times, and it is the most fun in the world to do 45 MPH 3 inches off the ground.... :D

I was going 95 on my Nighthawk 750 a few years back when that same thought when through my head. I decided to slow down a little bit...

In a car, my fastest was 115 on a lonesome stretch of 1-57 between Chicago and Champaign in a '91 Beretta GTZ.

I got 180+km/h in a Chevy Monza Here in Mexico, the roads are really bad in here so this was really dangerous, that time i was being followed by the police. It was scaryest as hell, bad brakes no air bags. And another dangerous in a datson 80 something, i got the 145 maximum, super dangerous, i was driving with my cousin and he upset it, he cut is back, i got out clean, that truck doesnthave seatbelts
I got 180 on a smart roadster, it was nice beacuse this car feels a lot safer than the Chevy. i spined on a Dodge intrepid at 160, drove a gokart at 110 or more. I love cars

I was a passenger in a..Monte Carlo, I think?.. that did 140mph+ in 1988.

I took my '93 Mazda MX-6 up to a bit over 120mph in the mid '90s.

Since then, I've rarely topped 85.

When I worked for Chrysler a few years back we were treated with the opportunity to drive a Viper on their test track. I hit around 190mph on the straight away, all I can say is wow. The thing had 500 horsepower/500 cubic inches/500 ft. lbs. of tourqe. Way over the top.

In my old car, I only ever got to about 90. It was kinda scary to even do that. It was an '82 Volkswagen Rabbit (diesel). Loud as hell at that speed, but that car didn't have a tach, which is why I was afraid to go much faster.

In my current car, an '89 Saab 900 Turbo, I've hit somewhere around 115, quite often. Around where I live there are entire mile stretches with nowhere for cops to hide and no intersecting streets. Super fun.

Got my old '90 Toyota Tercel up to 112 downhill with a tailwind one day. At that speed, I was more worried about the tires spontaneously exploding than anything else.

I drove a '93 Lumina for a while, but it was limited to 108.

Now I'm in a '04 Mazda 3 S. Turns out it's limted to 118 (by experiment). Sad, but I rarely get up that high anyway. She's got good power all the way up past triple digits, though, and that counts for more with me. Feels solid too, not at all like the Lumina or the Tercel. :D

110mph in my first car, a 1994 Toyota Pickup 4 banger with a manual. Took a while to get there, but it did it. Can you say wind noise? :p

I buried the speedo at 120mph in my 1999 Nissan Altima last summer while I was I was following a guy on a crotch rocket. After a minute or so at 120, the biker pulled away strongly, I'd estimate he got up to 135-140+. Too bad the Altima is electronically governed to 120, since at that speed it still has about 2k RPMs left. Maybe that's for the best... :D

So now I know who all those people I saw were! All the people posting in this thread!

^ About a year ago, we were driving in heavy traffic, at about 85mph, and 4 (count 'em — 4) heavily modified silver Porsche Carreras drove by at about 150 mph...weaving from one side of the road to the other, often across 4 lanes in one pass to avoid the traffic. They were in and out in about 3 seconds. My other experience at driving *around* other nice cars was actually this past summer, when I was the passenger in a Mitsubish Monter (big clunky SUV) doing about 60 mph. A Viper with its top down sidled up in the lane next to us, and I quickly wrote "Wanna Race?" on a piece of paper and held it up to the window. The Viper driver stuck out his tongue and dropped back out of sight around a slow bend. About 10 minutes later the Viper roared past us at what had to have been almost three times our speed.

Damn I want a fast car.

Has anyone considered speedometer error of margin? At high enough speeds, speedos have been known to be inaccurate by as much as 5-10 mph. Something to take into account.

Which is what I did. 154 mph on the speedometer, GPS verified on roads outside Sacramento. 96 Mustang Cobra.

All efforts ended when I got a speeding ticket for going 101 on highway 101 outside Santa Barbara. My next project is the 210 freeway :D

I hit the limiter on a 330ci sport last year at 155mph on a level straight.

Fastest ever was a 911 turbo at 168mph, it's like your flying.

Too bad my own cars a Civic and a late model Toyota pickup topped out at 128 and 110 respectively.

The fastest car I ever owned was a '95 MX6, with the comp and limiter retuned, squeezed out 134mph. They are limited stock to 119mph.

I DO NOT SUGGEST NEWBIE OR MILDLY TALENTED DRIVERS TO EVER REACH THESE SPEEDS. DRIVING COURSES AND LOTS OF EXPERIENCE. EVEN THEN IT'S VERY UNSAFE!

fastest i have been in a car is 140mph on a bike it is around the 170mph (i was on the back of it )

scarrrrrryyyy stuff , drive safe people

147 mph, first car-1965 Ford Galaxy 500 back in 1969-70, driving straight stretch between Modesto, CA and Santa Cruz. Totally nutzoid, but dem waz da days. :)
X

Fastest I've been is 115mph in a 60 zone, in mum's 3 series.

Raced a Megane dontcha know! Skidded off at the end, was lucky to make the round-about (took it about 50, didn't stop in time to even look to the right as I turned to the left, so I was lucky nothing was coming).

Won't be doing that again - not cool, folks! Still had my 'R' plates up too! Come to think of it, still do

andy.

Ah, the joys of being a mechanic at a supercar garage.

Well, lets see:

Twin Turbo Callaway Vette:

235 mph give or take, the speedo stopped well short of that! This was on a closed track btw! Twin turbos on a lt1 are some serious ****!

BTW, I still preferred the feel of the somewhat slower, but more refined ZR1

Supercharged Dodge Viper GTS:

195 = trust me, i would not want to go faster in a viper! But it got there VERY fast! This is the only supercharger I have ever installed on a viper, I have done a number of C5 vettes, and they run nice with it, but the viper is an absolute beast!

Shelby Series 1

Junk - 178 and i was all done thing felt like it was going to rattle apart... I see why they didnt make or sell many

We don't see much in the way of porsche material, but we have a carrera GT on the sales floor, but it has not needed to be in the garage yet... DARN :p

We have a number of ferrari's, but they never interested me much (plus we have a dedicated ferrari tech, so I don't drive them much either)

I just get the "miscellaneous" junk :p
