It Depends...

In my turbo-charged VW Jetta (chipped to 275hp), 137mph (GPS confirmed), comfortably, with Bridgestone high performance V-rated tires...no problem;

On the other hand, I got the wife's 1999 Dodge Caravan up to about 93mph; scared the hell out of myself...never again!

I'll always remember to use the appropriate tool for the job from now on...!

162 mph in an '05 Audi S4, I loved that car, too bad the lease ended :( it was an incredibly sad day when I had to give that car back.

155mph in a 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera (My car, I was the driver, alone.)

150mph 2002 Honda CBR 600 F4i (My bike, at night, I was alone.)

The porsche was smooth as butter. Oh, don't ever change lanes on a bike when your going that fast. I hit a line crack at 150 on my bike and almost died, so stay in the same lane. Also, keep your foot over the rear break when your doing wheelies on the freeway.

I love speed. : )

Not sure about this one; all Audi's are electronically limited to 155mph, and I have previously said I did 143mph in my RS4, which I found it difficult to get above because of the electronic limiter kicking in. And there's no way you had it removed on a lease..

An indicated 120mph in a 1989 Seat Ibiza 1.5 GLS - probably more like 110 in reality. Downhill on M1, broad daylight. Not proud, but I was much younger and stupider in those days.
Speed, or the feeling of speed, is relative though. In my old 1966 MG Midget, 70mph felt like 150. Dependent on the car and the road you don't need to go mega fast to enjoy yourself.

Normally that is true, but the car was a completely custom order, so Audi tuned it for the track and removed the top speed limit. To tell the truth, I was surprised they agreed to lease it.

It's not just Audis, it's all German cars that are limited to 155 (unless it's something special like the SLR McLaren). Why is that?? Is there some kind of law/regulation in Germany about this? I'd find that to be veru ironic considering they have unlimited sections of AutoBahn.
I've discussed this with a German friend whose Dad works in the automotive industry there. Apparently there is no law against having a car that goes faster than 155mph, but it's sort of an informal custom that because driving above that speed on a public road is extremely dangerous (there really is no denying this), they limit the cars. Hence why some cars are limited and some aren't (Audi R8, Bugatti Veyron etc).

Yes, it's a voluntary agreement, not law. Probably helps insurance premiums to an extent as well.
The BMW M5 is apparently capable of over 200mph when derestricted, but is sold as a '155mph' vehicle. The Bentley Continental Flying Spur, on the other hand, has no restriction and is quoted at 194mph (but has been independently driven by motoring journalists, four up, at over 200mph).

It's also because it's relatively straightforward to make a car that goes more than 155mph, but all of the parts (brakes, tires, suspension, belts, other components) required for consistent 155mph+ travel would greatly increase the price of the car. I believe most companies will sell you the car without the limiter with some upgraded components.

Is it because you don't like driving or you can't afford/aren't willing to pay for a car?

Nope this is the reason

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retinitis_pigmentosa

I was diagnosed with this back in 2002. Just went all my friends were taking driver ed on the school oval.

I have learned to accept it now, and rely on others to take me where i need to go provided they can and are willing to help me, I get really depressed sometimes mostly because they just get there cars and go and get what they need. Me when i need something if i felt like a nice hot chook or pizza for dinner i would have to ask and most of the time i get told no.

My Doctor told me that i am not even aloud to ride a bike. Public transport is pretty much Non existent here. I looked into taxi vouchers but i have to be "officially" classified as legally blind.

Oh, sorry about that mate! :(

I agree. Last summer (summer 09) my cousin and I went driving by my summer house in the suburbs (my parents weren't home). The roads there are small, dark and quiet. Well, we get on, do a little parking or whatever, he wanted to do some real driving, but i was afraid to, because if my parents found out, you probably wouldn't be reading this (I'd get punished severely). So whatever, yadiyadayada, I finally agree. The road ahead is straight and empty, and i put the pedal to the floor (in a Honda Accord V6, engine sounds great), I hit 40-45, and slowed down (didn't want to get seen or noticed), and then my cousin went for a go. I have to say, that moment was so exhilarating!! Because before that I never went over 25-27 MPH (my dad took me practicing in empty lots at that point in time) and when I did, I used feather-like acceleration. Even recently when I drove on the highway at 60, I still thought that full throttle acceleration to 40 was more fun. Although, driving on the highway is a lot of fun.

I once got the Expedition up to around 80 mph. I didn't like it. Seriously.

I take my '08 Tahoe up above 80 a lot... even on the freeway here in the city. I got pulled over around Thanksgiving outside of Post, Texas doing 87 in a 70. That State boy said he hadn't seen someone brake that fast. I got a warning out of that one most likely due to my rapid braking and his inability to register a speed to claim me at.

OTOH I got up to 165 in my dad's friends Vette a while back, I want to say it was a '99. That was something else. I feel like I'm going 80 while doing 40 in the new Z06's and 80 in my Tahoe is nothing.

I think it was 90-100mph in my girlfriend's dad's :)eek:) Lexus LS 460. He was letting us borrow the car for my senior prom.

On the way back, we got pulled over, but I was let off with a warning. :D

Honestly, the first time, I didn't even realize I was going that fast until I noticed that I was flying past cars on the highway. That car wasn't built to drive like a sports car; rather, it was built to drive as smooth as butter.

I would hit 100 every once in a while traveling to and from school. I would never do it with other cars on the road, but I was traveling on a highway that is pretty vacant in the early mornings. 68 in Maryland if anyone is familiar with it. Around Northern VA the most I'll do is 70 on the toll road. It's amazing what age does to you and the fact that I have been in 2 bad accidents (not my fault, a deer and a woman who hit me at a stop light doing 55 with no brakes). Needless to say, I don't drive fast anymore, but I keep it a constant 5 above the speed limit.
