I thought the movie was pretty good. Not too much gore, which is a plus (for me). The beginning of the actual 'game' felt kind of rushed though. Also, there were some minute details that were not fitting to the book, but generally the plots were very similar.

NYT - $155 Mil Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Also does confirm a two part movie for the third book. What utter bull. The 3rd book is last of the trilogy that needs to be split into two parts.

I think they forecasted a $140 million opening weekend so this definitely exceeds expectations.

Yeah I agree. The length of the books are relatively the same and there's really nothing in the third that would require that much time. I'd rather they put more detail into HGS or even CF than MJ. I wonder if they're going to add internal monologue for the next movie but probably not...

Loved the books and loved the movie. Too bad the second movie isn't scheduled for release until late 2013.

I think the third book does need two movies. I can't imagine squeezing everything from Katniss living in District 13 to the invasion/collapse of the Capitol into just one movie. There's just too much stuff.

Really liked the movie, haven't read the books yet, number one is on my desk as I write this.

I could see this easily getting an "R" rating though. I have a feeling they cut some of the scenes either out or down. Based on what I saw there looked to be a lot more blood and gore. Especially in the opening scenes of the start of the games.

Good movie, very well paced. Didn't seem at all like two plus hours.

I saw it last night with my family which included my 11 year old son. We all really enjoyed it. None of us except my daughter had read the book.

Watch those spoiler there....

Just saw the movie yesterday, after finishing the book sometime last week. Really enjoyed both. As others mentioned, Jennifer Lawrence was a brilliant casting decision, although everyone was cast very well IMO.

Next up is to knock out the next two books, which are loaded and ready to go on my Kindle. :)

I really enjoyed the film...

but I thought they didn't make much of the "sponsors" after making such a big deal about them in the beginning.

Also I think the wound medication could have been used twice, if you know what I mean. They could have been more clear on that.

Good film, felt the ending was a bit abrupt though. Went yesterday afternoon to see it.
The 'handheld' feel of the camerawork got a bit annoying. I can understand why they'd have it to mask the killing in the actual games, but it was a bit unnecessary at the beginning.

Overall I really enjoyed it though.

As usual, the book is better. Sure, the movie contains fancy effects which exceed what I had imagined from the descriptions in the novel, but that's it. I also liked the camera shaking, making it look more authentic. The novel was much better, though, because you get to see the entire story from Katniss' point of view. The movie is about some violent game in Panem, whilst the novel tells you the story about Katniss Everdeen from her point of view.

I thought that the casting was excellent for the movie (especially Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss). I thought the weakest might have been the part of Rue (It's very tough to find a good actress / actor when you have kids that young).

This is one movie where you don't need to read the book to understand / enjoy the movie but reading the book before going to the movie, doesn't take away from the movie either. In any case, I highly recommend both the book trilogy and going to see the movie.

My plan is to read the book, then eventually rent the movie.

Consider seeing it at the movies. They had to tone down the movie to make it PG13 and it lost some of it's emotional power as compared to the book. The audience response in some of the parts somewhat offsets this and definitely added to the movie (I'm not a big fan of violence in movies but I think in this case they lost something from the books by making the movie PG13).

This just means that after releasing the DVD/Blueray in PG13, they will follow it up some time later with a "Director's Cut". ;)

I guess I am the only one who didn't like the books

The first book was mildly interesting and entertaining and it should have ended with the revolution "catching fire" and the reader left to imagine the world becoming a better place, but that wouldn't have made any money on 2 more useless books

Hero? Symbol of hope? By the end she is a shallow, whiny, selfish, brainless girl whose only redeeming point is she can shoot a straight arrow

I'm trying to read the books right now. Did anyone else think that they were about ...fifth grade reading level?

The present tense writing style bothers the **** out of me, too. But by around page 100 I got over it.

Couldn't tell you if the book's good or not, as I've not finished it yet, either.

So was Harry Potter, but the character development and depth of the world pulls you in and you get over it.

I read books like The Hunger Games as a break from reading heavier things.

This is my main problem too. I like 3rd omniscient past. I can't really deal with anything else, I'm only attempting these books because of how great everyone thinks that they are.

Harry Potter's writing was really great, especially after the first book. The Hunger Games so far (I've only made it to chapter 7) is a small step up from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
