Hyperthreading effectively adds two 'cores' for free - which is two more than C2D could ever do.

APPLICATIONS, as you capitalised, make darn good use of the two extra threads. Conversly, APPLICATIONS also make good use of the Turbo Boost feature when using a single core. Plus there's the newly added SSE implementations.

Happy trolling, noob.

not all applications make a good use of "virtual cores" (actually only a few does), and with Turbo Boost the i5 is only a little bit faster than an high-end Core 2 Duo (10-20%, it depends on application).
It' s an improvement, not a revolution.

Apple is going to update its line-up, but we can wait some weeks without all this whining ....

BTW, I'm a Mac user with a degree since 1989, who the hell are you to call me noob ???

Your degree doesn't really mean much to a lot of people here. This is a rumors forum and look at the thread. What's it called? Being the educated person you are, wouldn't you imagine that there could possibly be some whining and complaining going on in here? Give me a break! If you don't like it then don't read it or visit this site.

For me it's a revolution. I heavily use multi-threaded apps.

Funniest post ever. Carry on trolling, you elitist snob.

it's not that using a computer is all about tech specs. it's that buying a computer is all about (or has a major component of) tech specs. the very reason that his PB has continued to serve him all these years is that it was powerful at the time he bought it.

so, is there something that a C2D won't do right now? probably not, but the answer might well be different in 4 years. i can't comprehend how people don't understand this. i also can't comprehend the people who just say buy a computer every year or 2 to stay current. each to their own, i suppose.

If after several years of use of your PowerBook you still think that using a computer is all about tech specs, maybe you DO have to switch to a Pc ...

I was ONLY referring to the guy that called me "a noob" without knowing absolutely NOTHING about my culture in this field.

I like to listen to ALL the complaining going on in this forum, as far as they are based on something ....

We all know that the MBP's lineup is going to be updated in the next weeks, so if you think that your PB had served you in such a good way, what's the reason to think at a switch ?
BTW the PB wasn't the most powerful computer on the market: Apple's hardware hardly is "top-notch" performer. They usually are BALANCED hardware (if you don't consider a GT120 on a Mac Pro :( ).

I started having feelings that I was getting to my wits end with Apple. However, running a PC at work has changed that idea. Not only is windows being a constant problem, but the computer itself, is not what I would expect out of a $1600 computer.

Apple is not prefect, but a hell of a lot better then the alternative.

that's exactly my feeling, being forced to use Windows systems every day at work (fortunately we have 12 MPs also ;) ).

Ironically I'm waiting for the new MacBook Pros to come out so I can grab one, format it, and install Windows 7 on it instead. I'm not interested in OS X whatsoever.

OS X is one of the main reasons to even buy an Apple computer in my opinion. You can buy a Sony with higher specs for less money. The Sony CS is about as close to a MBP as possible... minus the plastic-like bottom plate. But, to each their own.

And I'm sure that no one in this thread will actually buy a pc over a two week wait or however long for the release. We're all interested in the new Macbooks, and the wait is terrible. I personally have been waiting since last summer, and it's driving me crazy. Things will be better the day that they announce them...then I'll be able to sleep ;)

and now we know who is trolling here ...

Not a jot. I bought a Sony Vaio FW last year - very similar to a Macbook Pro in looks and features but half the price.

In the end, although the aforementioned Vaio FW was extremely fast and quiet, I wasn't happy with either the FW's plasticky build quality or the LCD screen. So I thought why bother getting something that tries to imitate a Macbook Pro when you can actually grab the Macbook Pro hardware with all its perks (aluminium chassis, a decent screen [that doesn't use the new, annoying 16:9 ratio that all Sony laptops use now], extended battery, overall sleekness) and run Windows on it for real.

Gotcha. I just read your post as it was at the top of the page. My bust.

Already bought a Sony Vaio two weeks ago. An F series to be exact. Has a core i7, 6gb ddr3, blue ray... list goes on and on. Very happy with my decision. :D

How much did that all cost you if you don't mind me asking? I am considering going with the same computer.

If you really don't like OSX, as it seems, buying an Apple's computer is a waste of money IMHO

I was mainly after the hardware more than anything. No PC laptops have an aluminium chassis, a 16:10 ratio screen (instead of 16:9 in high resolution which is extremely difficult to read and work with), an extended battery as standard, a nice keyboard & trackpad, or basically look as nice as the Macbook Pro.

Unfortunately for me, the 16:9 screens in high resolution rule out all of the Vaios. I just can't get on with those screens. They're great for watching movies at the cinema, but not for computing. With the Windows Startbar and window titles and icons along the whole of the bottom and top of the screen, you're left with very limited vertical usage. Not only that, but the Vaio FW had shocking screen quality. The colours were terrible, incorrect, faded and indistinct, impossible for web and graphics designing, even after persevering with custom colour/graphic parameters. This was the 1-lamp "Eco" screen option at 1440x900 for the Vaio FW. The other option for the FW was a two-lamp 1900x1200 screen, which although would give better image quality is much too high resolution for a 16:9 screen imho. Text becomes miniscule, for the gain of nothing.

I'm also waiting for the new MBP since october, so like many others here, I considered buying a PC laptop with a core i7, I looked HP Envy, Alienware, Asus, Sony, Dell, all are interesting on paper, but I just cannot switch back to Windows ,even if I like 7. When you go to their forums, 50% of people have problems (Saw this on HP Envy's Lounge, same for Dell XPS 16)... After a long process, I still thinks the MBP are state of the art laptops, with the best compromise between mobility and power, hardware and software, good reliability, the best design (sorry but Vaios have poor bending plastic around the screen even on 1600EUR FW). I love Snow Leopard, iLife, etc etc etc
So I'll wait ! And if the new MBP really disappoints me... I'll grab an iMac !

Yeah, I have a Vaio FW and I asked about the bendy plastic on a forum a while ago. Although it really doesn't make a difference, it's just gives the perception that the laptop isn't as sturdy as it could be.

I wonder if anyone that owns a unibody MBP is going to be saying this... I don't think there's really any choice once you've been using a unibody for a while, but to wait for the new one (though mine does all I need and I'm not planning to upgrade anytime soon).

The glass trackpad, multitouch gestures and glass glossy screen (I'm a glossy person) is just something no Windows laptop does as well... HP Envy and Dell Adamos are ugly too IMO for alu laptops... all those vents don't help.

Damm Apple - I'm spoiled now.

you have a MBP that still is a good computer.
You can definitely wait some more weeks ;)

Yeah, so do I, but you know what ? Safari's bottleneck still is your Internet connection, not your processor.

(in case you don't get it, about every modern app is multi-threaded).

The fact is, Apple is coming out with Arrandale Macbooks. When ? Who knows. If you can't wait a few more weeks and would rather have a Sony on order for those few weeks (because they ship in March, same with the Lenovos), then go right ahead.

Good things come to those who wait.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Sony F series which is out already. The Z is going to be a little too expensive for my taste.

Either way, the point of this thread was not to hear opinions on if I should stick with apple or make a switch. If it was the title would be something like "why should I stick with apple over getting a pc?" But, I do appreciate everyones concern and permission to make the switch. I am thankful for the support. ;)

Couldn't determine if you were being ironic as text doesn't give the benefit of body language. =/

Anyone who just uses Safari for their computing could probably use a Powerbook and not notice any difference.

For the rest of us who do actually use a computer for actual computing (funnily enough), there's C2D and latterly (I'm sure Apple will get there eventually, a day late and a dollar more expensive) i7.
