I was thinking more along the lines of the Sony F series which is out already. The Z is going to be a little too expensive for my taste.

Either way, the point of this thread was not to hear opinions on if I should stick with apple or make a switch. If it was the title would be something like "why should I stick with apple over getting a pc?" But, I do appreciate everyones concern and permission to make the switch. I am thankful for the support. ;)
so if you don't want to hear opinions, what exactly do you want from this forum ?
I don't want to be rude, but seriously what do you expect from us after joining this forum just to let us know that you might buy a Sony Vaio ?!?

The OP has a point; the current MBPs are getting embarrassing. And you can't just counter it by saying "oh, the other manufacturers aren't shipping their Arrandale-machines yet either", because Clarksfield has been available for months now and spanks both C2Ds (obviously) and Arrandales.
I've been a very satisfied Apple-customer since the Tibook days and I really can't wait for them to come out with a serious contender in the laptop space again, so I can understand the OP's frustration.

Hell, for some comedy, look at my University's current offers for students. A top-of-the-line 15" MBP costs about 2'700 bucks (converted), while an Elitebook 8540 with quad-core, 8 GB RAM, BR-burner, 1GB Quadro GPU and USB 3.0 clocks in at 2'300. Same for a specced out Thinkpad w510 with 8 gigs of RAM. Yeah, they're Windows machines, but don't tell me these extreme discrepancies don't make you cringe at least a little bit.

I want a replacement for my iPhone and for the iPad that I might never buy. I truly believe that for under $500, Apple could only produce something that is a pice of junk. Stevie said it, not me.

I would never trade osx over windows, but The Sony vaio cw has an excelent performance for the price, core i5 nvidia 310m, 4gb RAM, under 1000usd. The only two Apps Microsoft has that have no competition in the market are office and Windows Livewritter. Office is also a mac app but blogging software for mac is a joke, I wish Apple had a similar offering to Windows livewritter.

if you need a NOTEBOOK and not a desktop replacement, Clarksfield simply isn't an option ...

BTW Apple is not making any Clarksfield notebook, and I'm not going to have Windows in my PERSONAL computer anymore

Strange, I've always been using my MBPs as desktop replacements and they've done fine. Also, looking at the 17" machine, it's insane to say that it isn't geared towards people looking for a desktop replacement.
I intend to use my next MBP as a desktop replacement too; it's just that Apple is really behind the curve with their current lineup.

And I'm aware that they will probably not use Clarksfield (although a BTO-option would be nice), but so what? It's not a choice I agree with, and the fact remains that C2D has been outdated for months now.

What I meant was, and I mentioned this plenty of times, that I simply wanted to see what other computers people were considering other than the mbp that has no said date for the release. This is not a thread about me asking if I should switch to pc or a "please try to convince me to stick with apple" thread.

Seriously, check out the Elitebook 8540w and the Thinkpad W510 I mentioned. If I had the patience to deal with Windows I'd get one of these in a heartbeat, especially the Elitebook.

Probably cheaper on sony's site, but I bought the one best buy has for 1400 after tax and all.

I just checked out the F and CW series here in Boston at the local Sony Store. They definitely seem pretty nice. I need a computer by the end of the month so I will wait until then, if no update I'll probably grab one of those.

For the rest of us who do actually use a computer for actual computing (funnily enough), there's C2D and latterly (I'm sure Apple will get there eventually, a day late and a dollar more expensive) i7.

Wait, writing shell scripts isn't computing ?

If you use your computer for scientific data crunching or rendering or sound processing or about any other advanced capabilities, you're not using a laptop anyhow, so why would you care if they have C2Ds.

The fact is, the update is coming. Whining because it ain't here yet is useless. Making threads about "leaving Macs because Apple makes you wait" is attention wh**ish.

Why consider anything else until we actually know what Apple is going to offer ? If you're that much in a hurry, registering on Macrumors just to post this troll thread was probably not the best way to go to get valuable information on Wintel craptops.

Might I suggest a Sony Vaio forum next time ?

You may suggest anything you would like.

And you are asking HERE ?!?
IIRC this board is Mac Forums>Apple Hardware>Notebooks>MacBook Pro.
There are hundreds of forums dedicate to notebooks and Windows Notebook in particular.
With all due respect your seems to be only trolling around to piss off people that REALLY are waiting for an updated MBP.

BTW you can choose whatever you want: your money, your choice :)

I didn't notice a thread like this and since it seemed like this was one of the only threads that has not popped up yet, i figured i would start one.

I have a old Powerbook G4 that I love, but it is dying and I need a replacement. This thread is for the people that, out of necessity and/or practicality, might just make the switch from Apple to another vendor because:

1. Why spend money on old technology when there are so many companies offering laptops with way better specs for the same if not a cheaper pricetag.

2. There is no set date as to when this update will come out, speculation yes, but nothing is locked in.

If you are one of these people, which computers are you considering?

This is not a Apple hating thread, it is just a thread to discuss alternatives to people that cannot wait any longer...

Apple does not have to tell you what they have in mind. It's a totally fair game. Most people who use Macs pay for the operating system (and looks?).

If the OS doesn't matter to you, and you are just a die-hard fan of specs, a PC is what you should get. That's why my desktop is a PC. :D

Seriously, what's your problem? We are all Macbook pro users waiting for an update, and the OP wanted to know what we as MAC USERS would POSSIBLY consider on the PC side. I'm waiting on my Thinkpad T410. Who knows what it will be like? Maybe I'll hate it. But it was the best one I could see myself using as a former Macbook Pro user (Mine died and I had to get a new laptop asap).

The OP repeatedly said that was exactly his/her intention. Not to say "Hey I'm switching over," but more to see if there are any possible alternatives worth considering for a mac person.

If you don't have any recommendations for the OP, you probably shouldn't be posting on this thread.

Couldn't help but notice that you didn't recommend anything in this post.

My eyes have been opened to the new breed of computer user--the Spec Whore. Spec Whores don't really do all that much with a computer and really don't care what OS they use, so switching OS's is just collateral damage in the grand Spec Whoring scheme of things.

Switching OS's is a big deal--applications, files, projects, organizational systems... If you're using serious applications that you've invested a lot into, then it's ridiculous to switch to a new OS just because your buddies at work are showing off their screaming speed while running Notepad on their Core i7s and you feel left out.

If it's all the same to you, you're probably not using either platform too seriously. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I never said it was all the same. Besides, I'm a programmer/electrical engineer and do a lot of machine level programming, so I probably understand a lot more about computer operating systems than most people here. imho, OSX is by far the best OS out there. But I find Windows 7 okay.

This forum doesn't seem to be a place for exchanging well thought out opinions and ideas. You all have a nice day.

I think the grand sentiment here is that people are tired of Apple falling behind the curve regarding specs. If we pay $2k+ for a MBP then we should get high end specs. IMO - Apple can't make it anymore on the OS and lack of the necessary specs on their laptop line. Sure, they won't conform to Bluray until the issues are ironed out. Sure, they have an agenda with mini-display port versus HDMI. I understand all that but they need to separate themselves from the competition once again (think PowerBook G4) in terms of technology and specs because the rest has caught up to Apple.

Call those people spec whores all you want but if I am going to invest a large chunk of change then my MBP should be top of the line without worrying about a $600 Windoze machine blowing out of the water. I know the OS is the difference maker but W7 is closing the gap on OS X.

Does the OSX86 project (or Pystar Rebel) have Snow Leopard running on any i5/i7 laptops yet? (Yeah, I know I can check for myself, but thought someone here might know offhand.) I want to get something before our budgets get cut.
