I wouldn't say no one in cities uses it but I'd say transit is a massive hole. Apple have been buying up transit apps recently so hopefully it's a work in progress.

Agreed, I was being dramatic.

But it is true that Apple Maps is much less desirable than Google Maps in big cities because of non-existant mass transit routing.

I prefer the UI in Apple Maps but that's about it; it never gets used.

More than useless.

You can just close your eyes, plonk your finger on the map and you've got more chance of being accurate than Apple Maps.

So, basically, you're admitting that you don't use Apple Maps and would rather be ignorant of facts instead of taking the time to understand?

Because what you just said is complete nonsense.

It really isn't.

London has more inaccuracies than accuracies.

POI's visible from Apple UK's own corporate headquarters are missing. It claims that my local town hall, in central London, is a kebab house.

Yeah it really is pretty bad in the UK. For example, Cabot Circus in Bristol is not on there at all. It's a pretty major shopping centre and it opened 5 years ago.

I typed in "Cabot circus" and it brought up the Apple store there...is that not close enough? Not from Bristol, so I'm not sure.

I'm mainly referring to the main mall in that triangle area, which, if you zoom in a bit on google maps, you'll see has a load of shops, restaurants and a cinema. None of them are in Apple maps. That area is just blank.

RE: Apple store, I think the shops along that row are kind of an external extension of Cabot Cirucs. You'll notice that ONLY the apple store is on there even though it's a row of shops (again, compare with google). This suggests that Apple just add all their shops. Apple Maps doesn't reflect the current state of the buildings there. Basically the map data is at least 5 years old.

Tell you where Apple does beat Google for Cabot Circus though- the satellite imagery! On Google it's still being built. Apple maps shows a completed building :)

Yep...I noticed that on Google maps that the enclosed "mall" to the right of the image as you referenced was known as Cabot Circus. That's why it surprises me that Apple even identifies their store as part of that.

There are one or two shops that show up in Cabot Circus...just not at the zoom level I have in my pic.

Pretty sure this happened in one of the betas, but you are now limited on the 3D view angle in "non-flyover" cities.

You used to go pretty flat and see terrain...no more.

Edit: actually, I guess they just made it "smarter"...the angle in non-flyover areas just limits how flat you can go the more you zoom in. Makes sense I guess for the visual, especially when there are buildings.

My local pub is about 200 metres from where it should be.

The RAF base in my village is about half a mile out and Apple thinks it's a golf course.

There are restaurants in town that shut down and rebranded about 5 years ago. It puts some shops in the water.

There's a large castle that's completely missing.

I reported loads of problems when it first came out and none of them are fixed.

And I'm obviously not from there...so asking serious questions here. Maybe you are referring to other poi's that are indeed wrong.

This one that's clearly marked with the airstrip going right down the middle?

There's another icon that shows it as a golf course. Zoom in on the junction of Grantham Road and Mere Road in standard map view. You'll see that "RAF Waddington" shows up as a golf course in standard map view.

Likewise with Lincoln Castle - it shows up in satellite view, but in standard map view there's just a big empty space that says 'Lincoln castle' when zoomed in all the way, but when zoomed out there's no clue it's even there.

Ok...so if I zoom in all the way (either view) an incorrect icon comes up marked as the AFB...but when I searched and looked on my own in an area I don't know or have even been to, the correctly marked area with correct icon came up. Isn't that what a map is supposed to do? The one you mention doesn't even come up as part of a search.

----------

It looks like they've fixed the restaurant that was in the water.

The other problems I've mentioned remain though:

I'm not making these up for the hell of it, believe it or not :)

But isn't that where the castle is?

So what you're saying is it's fine to put loads of incorrect POIs everywhere so long as the correct one comes up in a search?

Also, I don't know what you searched for but when I do a search for "RAF Waddington" it shows the incorrect POI as well as the correct one. Try it and see.

But isn't that where the castle is?

Yes, but you have to zoom all the way in to see what is a major local tourist attraction and landmark. If you don't zoom in all the way in that seemingly pointless blank area, you'd never know it was even there. Do you not see the problem with that?

Meanwhile all of the little restaurants and shops dotted around show up when zoomed out no problem.

I'm not claiming it's perfect...I'm not even saying there aren't tons of errors on there that have been there for a year now.

You gave the list. I have never been there and don't know the area at all and my searches came up correct. That's all.

Maybe your pub is still wrong. Only thing I wasn't able to check.

The pub should be where the incorrect RAF Waddington POI is; it's definitely not a golf course there :p That incorrect POI just needs nuking, as there's already a correct one in the right place, as you found.

There seems to be some deep seated logic errors with maps though, dont you think? At least with some of the POIs.

BIG CASTLE - zoom right in to see it.
little shop - shows when zoomed out all the way.

There seems to be no consistency with what it shows at various zoom points. I see it so many times where there's actually a row of shops somewhere, but it only shows one or two until you zoom in all the way then it shows more. It does this even when there's enough space to show them all.

I do agree though that maps have and are improving. At least underground stations and rail stations in London have different icons now, and some of the missing underground stations now appear.

There is a whole load of outdated and missing information still, but it is getting better.

Does the name of the pub even come up? I imagine not since there is no icon there.

In defense...it does say "approximate location" for that spot. :p

I imagine crap like that will be fixed...thanks for admitting at least that it has improved dramatically. But, shows how much it wcs f'd up in the first place and how quickly people will lose faith if something hey rely on so much isn't at least minimally correct.

The icon logic is probably a matter of opinion though. Not sure how much they will change the level of importance of certain poi's
