Yes and every year it's because the camera bump gets bigger and bigger.

Perhaps when Apple stops making it larger and larger every year (or God forbid, actually makes the camera flush with the housing) the threads will end?

They’d complain about the ugliness even then. None of the smartphone flush mounted camera configurations look good, either.

It wasn't pushing the boundary of 'good design'. It was pushing the boundary of design you would prefer (we all have our preferences, after all).

It could be argued that a camera bump on the side of the phone allows the phone to be more usable when placed on a flat surface. It might be tilted slightly, but it's more stable than if the bump was in the middle of the phone where it would rock quite seriously no matter where you touched the phone.

Well it looks like a double bump to me, so I wouldn’t count on stability. Each lens protrudes from the bump which itself protrudes from the back glass.

the look is subjective but I sure don’t get it and won’t be buying this round. I hope they change it for next year because I need to upgrade eventually.

The S10s look decent and are nearly flush.

I'm just speculating, but I wonder if it has anything to do with trying to reduce flare under certain conditions? When you have lenses of various focal lengths (even micro-lenses) every piece of glass you put in front of them will affect image quality and potentially add flare and reduce contrast. It may be that each lens element has a piece of glass over it that is of a very specific thickness and even curvature. Adding a top plane of glass that covers all elements would create a cleaner looking iPhone, but perhaps with compromises.
- Given that the ultrawide has 5 elements vs 6 for the other lenses... I bet they couldn't cover it all with a single pane of glass without compromising one or more lenses.

There’s got to be a reason outside of aesthetics for obvious reasons. I’m not the biggest fan, but I ultimately prefer the best possible pictures and videos to be taken, and if this design is what was necessary to achieve that, then so be it. Again, I just can’t imagine that this was an aesthetics decision; there’s likely a good reason.

Anyone here that says design doesn’t matter is in utter denial and simply kidding themselves.

Good design is everything - back in the day, good design is exactly what separated Apple from the rest of the pack, and it was the cornerstone of their success and rise to prominence.

Are you saying you’d be okay buying an ugly-looking Porsche just because you’re always on the inside when you drive it? Because you prefer function over form?

Please stop shamelessly defending Apple by making convenient/illogical arguments.

Unfortunately apple employees and isheep are out in full force at this time of the year.

I agree.

People paid extra money for an Apple device because of design. That is also what Steve jobs found important with his devices.

Atleast the Macbook Pro’s look very good still.

Agreed. They are hideous. And the colors are super dull. The camera bump looks like the phone has a cheap plastic case. I like the camera bump of the X, it looks elegant with a modern touch.

I kind of hate the guy, but is this what we're going to see post ive?

You know these phones were designed while Ive was still the head of design, right?

The problem is you act like good design is something objective.

In reality people like to call good design whatever they like and everything they don't like is bad design. That's not how it works.

This logic doesn’t hold water. Numerous past iPhones have had flat glass over the back lens, including the most recent iPhone XS

I wasn't expecting much and I'm still disappointed. Its almost as though Johny Ives already left Apple but he's still there till the end of the year

So much so that the design of the iPhone 4 interfered with cellular reception.

Remember AntennaGate? Jobs wasn’t immune to designing flawed products.

Such a beauuuuutiful design...unless you hold it wrong.

Those were the days.

I take it then you were (are) not a fan of the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s and iPhone SE?

Spot on - design is absolutely subjective. But to act like design doesn’t matter is what I’m arguing against in my post. Some may like the design of the new iPhone, others may not - that’s completely okay. But design is a critical factor that ultimately impacts purchase decision (at least for me), so you can’t ignore it.

Devils advocate...on the other hand, anyone expecting Apple to sacrifice overall grip (thickening the phone so the camera is flush), or the quality of their still/video camera by reducing the bump to be flush with the existing design could also be in denial.

This is the happy medium Apple's had for years now. It's time people dealt with it & move on...

Apple could just make the top part thicker than the rest of the phone so that it sits up when you place it on a table. Seems like that would actually be innovation. You'd get a better looking design and a useful way to have your phone angled towards your face when lying on a flat surface.

the S10 is half a mil thinner than iPhone 11 and 0.3 mm thinner than iPhone 11 pro and manages to have a nearly flush back and great cameras too. I’ll never switch bc i hate android os, but I think you’re inventing reasons to defend an ugly device

This is a perfect example of a lazy excuse for terrible design.

Give it a rest already. You have your opinion, but it's just that. Others can disagree. The design is just fine - I personally dig the lenses, and I love the midnight green color.

You don't like the design? Don't buy the phone, no one really cares.

Ah fully agree there I may have misread your first quote. Yes for people to act like design doesn't matter at all would be disingenuous.

It may not be the most important factor to some people but it certainly plays a role

I care! Also, why do you have to come here and stifle conversation?

Then you would make the people who believe the phone should lie as flat as possible angry.

Can’t please everyone. Apple does what they think is best and people can vote with their wallets if they agree or not.
