This is what the iPhone 11 Pro cameras remind me of, I really like them. This is a great design, they have added a bit of a retro touch to them.

What? You serious? better than 2G or 3G? 2G was a leap forwards back then when it came to phone design, 3G sure was plasticy at the back, yet it was still elegant and nice to look at.
Never looked twice at iPhones before the 4 personally, though I did like the 2g/3g iPod touch which was similar but slim and chrome... With the iPhones I found the chrome fascia around the front bezel the most offensive part, looked really dated as soon as it was launched. Maybe at the time it did seem a revolutionary form factor, but we're looking at it from a 2019 perspective if we're comparing all the way up to the 11 Pro...

Nearly everyone has a case or protector on the phone. Who gives a **** what the back of the phone looks like.

I'd make the iPhone little bit bigger so the lenses wouldn't stick out and use all the extra internal space for more battery.

That would add way more than 18 grams that everyone is already complaining about.

Back to the drawing board.

Not all of us need a bazillion MP camera that can take perfect pics from space. Some of us just use the camera on our phone so our wives can see what item on the shelf at Walmart they want.

99% of the pics in my camera roll are that. And any old phone can call, text, surf and email.

99% of the pics on my camera roll are either my home or my lock screen.

I actually don't find it that ugly. The 3 lenses look kind of cool with the matte colors and matching camera bump, almost an industrial look. I think the bigger eye-sore is the notch, which seems pretty dated at this point. I like the green color too, but would have loved a deep blue in that same tone.

You really that insecure about yourself that you care about what other people think about your phone camera lenses?
Me? Tell that to the other guy who said he'll put a case on it so people will only ask him about cameras. Jeez, focus man focus!

Where I really noticed it was while watching first-hand videos on YouTube. The iPhone 11 does have a different back in that it does not have the Matte finish.
OK in this photo the bump and back of the phone look like they match. Maybe it’s just the darker colors where you can notice the difference?

That's pretty cool. I notice the lenses are more or less equidistant from each other, just like the iPhone 11 Pro. Methinks Apple knows what they're doing.

Watch it just be OP spending the day creating alts to vote on their own poll
That same OP also added a third option to the poll, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," meaning that OP is open minded about everyone's opinion, as we all should be.

News flash, not everyone eats and breathes anything Apple.

Anyone here that says design doesn’t matter is in utter denial and simply kidding themselves.

Good design is everything - back in the day, good design is exactly what separated Apple from the rest of the pack, and it was the cornerstone of their success and rise to prominence.

Are you saying you’d be okay buying an ugly-looking Porsche just because you’re always on the inside when you drive it? Because you prefer function over form?

Please stop shamelessly defending Apple by making convenient/illogical arguments.
Completely agree and this has been the premise of the thread since its inception but many folks are blindly replying with generic responses like "Who cares, as long as it'll take great pictures it doesn't matter."

Just because it works doesn't mean that it's great. This is a broken mentality to have. Design and functionality should be equally important.

Some people are reading this thread out of context thinking that it's a siege against the iPhone 11 Pro being a bad phone, but that's not even remotely close to what this thread is about. This discussion is about looks, design, and aesthetics, something that Apple seems to have sorely failed on with the iPhone 11 Pro.

You don't like the design? Don't buy the phone, no one really cares.
Cared enough to post about it, thanks.

So exactly what is your dream phone? No camera bump? And stick with ****** photos?
An updated iPhone SE with a full screen design like the iPhone X. Even if Apple had to make it slightly bigger I would be okay with it. I really hope that rumoured 5.4" premium iPhone is still in the works, and until then I'll keep using my iPhone SE, which still takes good enough pictures for me!

My fella’s got the Note 10+ and it is a masterpiece compared to this.
Indeed it's an absolute beauty. Samsung has been killing it lately in terms of DESIGN. Apple should take note (literally)!

I won't go so far as to say it makes me feel sick, but I think because Apple is doing glamour shots close up of it as if it were beautiful, I do get that gross trypophobia feeling. If you don't know what trypophobia is you can do a Google image search. Some trypophobia makes my mouth water. This just makes me feel uneasy. I don't get why the carbuncle glass isn't frosted like the rest of the back. It looks like the lenses are frozen in amber.
Searched trypophobia on Google, will have nightmares tonight, thanks. What's hilarious is that searching trypophobia on Google also gave results of articles about the iPhone 11 Pro and mentions of that phobia, haha.

who gives a sh*t, its on the back of the phone? The pictures will come out great. Im more concerned about how the front looks. Everyone slated airpods when they first came out, 3 years later they're almost a "fashion" piece
"Who cares if it's ugly, it at least works."

People are already complaining it’s 18 grams more. I’m not sure their arms could take that bigger battery.
Every gram counts on a device that's with you everywhere. Over time, the weight of a smartphone can make or break the experience.

Maybe it’s a millennial thing or just whining because they need to justify not being able to afford it.
Pretty embarrassing post. So basically people who dislike the design of the phone are only complaining because in reality they can't afford it? Fantastic mentality, I shall recommend you for a medal of logic.

And I think that spider is adorable. And I am terrified of spiders.
Compared to the iPhone 11 Pro, the spider does look cute!

So why aren’t you taking Johnny Ives’ job then?
Sent my resume as soon as Apple revealed the iPhone 11 Pros.

The spider is better looking. At least it's eyes are in a horizontal row and not all over the place.

I am usually not too picky about designs, but I agree that these new iPhones are absolutely hideous. Seriously, it's 2019 and they couldn't have come up with something better?

What I want to know is why the need for the huge exteriors on the cameras?

Are these larger apertures compared to something like the Note 10 Plus? I just don't know why they need to be that large and obtrusive when others are implementing the "same" array without the bulk.

Is there a purpose around the design or just a way to differentiate from other handsets?
I just flipped my Note10+ over and took a look at the camera lenses which are disguised with black glass around them. They are pretty big. So it looks like Apple did what it did with exactly what it had to work with. We know they want to do some sort of computational photography that sounds similar to what Google does. Google has the same square arrangement from what I have seen of the leaks. So I'm guessing this is a matter of marrying function to form. I don't think my Note does the same kind of computational photography Apple and Pixel are attempting. My Note takes really nice photos but people aren't super thrilled about Note or S10 photos.

Question: Couldn't they just have had the 3 camera lenses all behind some type of glass square on the back, so that there wouldn't be 3 separate circles? That is my main issue with this design.

This logic doesn’t hold water. Numerous past iPhones have had flat glass over the back lens, including the most recent iPhone XS

A few things I can think of:

The flat glass on my X did break, and I seem to remember it being a recurring problem. Perhaps there is more to that and perhaps it's compounded when enlarged in size to such an extent.

I'm assuming they'd use sapphire for scratch resistance, but we also know sapphire is brittle and cutting into it twice for a microphone and flash perhaps would've lead to increased cracking issues.

Perhaps the nature of this new glass material is such that this design was optimal for strength and stability.

Again, I simply can't imagine that they wouldn't have preferred a cleaner look. I think this design was a compromise for some reason to optimize performance and durability and they did the best they could to make it look "nice," albeit in this case "nice" is a relative term. I do miss the days of iPhone 5/5s when everything was flush; I do think that those remain some of the nicest looking iPhones from a design standpoint, though the cameras have obviously gotten much better, and those beveled edges didn't look so hot after a month or so of use, especially on the slate iPhone 5.

It's not a perfect world.

I don't get such a heavy focus on the camera for Apple. Sure, we want them to take great photos but at what expense? This thing is flat out ugly IMO, the iPhone has always taken wonderful photos and to go to this length seems unnecessary.

Also, as a photographer this still cannot compete with a DSLR sensor and real lenses. If you want to take your pictures to the next level, you'll still need the appropriate gear.

Well, I am not nearly everyone. I am me. And I don't use cases.

But what I hear you saying is that since 'nearly everyone' has a case I've got no right to express an opinion about a design aesthetic I don't care about.

Do I read you right?

I voted no. I prefer the pill shaped camera of the iPhone X line but it doesn't look as ugly as the iPhone 8 Super.

The more I've thought about it, the more I think this has to do with the fragility of sapphire. They already had issues with the X camera lens cracking frequently. Not sure if it was solved with XS or if I simply haven't been paying attention because mine didn't break, but this matter would be compounded on a larger piece of sapphire.

This is why my theory is that leaks are controlled - that way, the ugliness grows on people and ultimately, upon reveal/launch, the design is acceptable. I bet people would have been shocked and reacted far more negatively, if they'd seen this monstrous design for the first time during the keynote.

I completely agree and have thought this for several years.

iPhone has never competed directly with a professional-level DSLR. It's meant to be the camera you always have with you, as carrying around a bulky DSLR and lenses everywhere you go doesn't make any sense.

But this is MacRumors. When Apple prefers form over function, people complain. When Apple prefers function over form, people still complain.
