Emulsion's is my favorite yet. I really like the navigation menu. I could see an iPhone nano like that if it were around the same size as the LG Chocolate when it is slid open (I used that example because my gf has one and having held it, I know the form factor would still be comfortable to hold). I think texting would still be possible if it was only allowed in landscape mode especially if the text area was limited to around two lines so the buttons wouldn't be too short. With a long thin text area, that would probably still be plenty of space and if not, arrows could be added to the end to scroll up or down to review your text message before sending. In general, I think most functions would need to be orientation specific similar to texting (ex. scrolling through contacts only in portrait orientation). The only thing I would change would be to take out the Safari icon because web browsing on that screen would be impractical.

Here you go people :)

The only thing I'd change would be the Finder icon. I'd make it look a little more glossy. Just to match the rest of icons.

Great job!

I know I am far from perfect and this is all fun and games in this thread but, it seems like a lot of people in here are very unrealistic with their mockups. Are you guys aware of how unrealistic they are or are you just photoshopping what you would like? What makes you guys think that an iPhone Nano is going to have virtually all, if not all the features of the current iPhone and on top of that be a fraction the size lol??? I'm pretty sure Apple made it as compact as they could in the current state. How do you think they could take all that now and make it half the size? I know the new iPhone might be a little bit more compact but come on people. Also what is with the interfaces and user interaction? You think Apple would really use a click wheel so that it takes people 5 steps just to call someone, especially when they now have Multi-Touch? When I do a mockup I try to actually go through the process as if I were making a real product. That involves user interaction, interface, market, target demographic, technological feasibility, cost, design, product differentiation, etc. Do any of you other mockup artists in here go through that process or are you just photoshopping for fun???

Once again, I'm not trying to rag on people. I am really just wondering what you guys are going for with your designs? I'd love to hear all of your theories behind your designs.

Thanks everyone, and keep 'em coming :)

I see your point here and yes there are many of us that just do it for fun. But you are right we should most definitely be more accurate.

Way to rain on our parade... Just kidding.

Here's the updated more realistic version.

(no safari)

Well I go through thoose steps too. In the very beginning of this thread, i made a iphone nano mockup with clickwheel but without safari. And some people said it must have safari. But do you see someone surfing the internet with a clickwheel.?? I'm not saying all my mockups are realistic but some are.. Even if it has a smaller screen that doesn't mean it can't work. You could have sms texting with typing horizontally, so you have more space to type..

I think Liveforever has hit the nail on the head and all the talk of touch screens is missing the point. They need cheap low end iphones as well as the high end ones and I don't think touch screens are that cheap so we may see keypads and scroll wheels. Remember apple is known for its ipods so if they incorporate an ipod with a conventional looking phone then its still an iphone. Nokia do high end smart phones and low end cheapies -apple must do the same so don't get obsessed with touch screens across the whole range

This article also says the same thing

Live forvever
They have to do this- a cheap anti smart phone which just is a phone and an MP3 player.

I woud go for a membrane keypad, scroll wheel and cheap $8 2.4" TFT LCD.

No Touch screen, no wi fi, no internet, maybe a camera but mainly a phone and a music player. That's all most people want

Cheap cheap cheap to get the low end market and still be an iphone. Its what apple have done with ipod. First released high end hard drive models then gradually secured the low end until they have the sub $100 shuffle. I think they will do this same scorched earth policy with the iphone range too.

The ipod is dead long live the iphone (s)

Heres mine, I had PhotoShop on a computer at school so I thought I might as well mess around, although you should know that I know nothing about PhotoShop at all...

Yiu arw not allowed to make apps that emulate other systems or run other code in any way... So, NO WM :)

Ha ha, no thats not what I meant. I meant that the SDK is going to be such a big hit that WM is going to want in on the action of the iPhone so they would want to make parallels for their software. Meaning a WM phone running OSX so they can rep some of the benefits of the iPhone. I know it will never happen, I was just saying.

For some reason I dont think they would do a nano version anytime soon. But I could be wrong. It's just my hunch.

Yeah, we kind of all know that but we're just messin' around. One day though. Although i think the name iPhone Nano is hideous. Although I also think the name Macbook Air is also.

I just think that the things Steve said when introducing the iPhone should be an indicator. The things he said are true (not just for fan boys) and that is what led to the iPhone being designed the way it is and now everyone copying it. Like, the problem with phones is the lower 3rd, fixed buttons, need more real-estate, we solved these problems already on computers with a GUI, control with your finger, multi-touch, buttons are limited and fixed forever unless you upgrade the hardware (that includes click wheels). So why on a device that would be even smaller than the iPhone would you waste what little space you have with physical buttons or a click wheel when you could use all of that space for a custom changing GUI??? Think about it people. There is a reason why Apple has the best design in the industry and their logic in design should give you some clues about things because it is solid as their reputation shows!

The click-wheel was great but it was done once the iPhone came out with multi-touch. Soon all the iPods will have multi-touch, but actually all iPods will be iPhones soon, that is where it is all headed eventually. People in the future are going to have a computer (network) at home, in their cars, and ONE portable device like the iPhone that encapsulates their phone and everything else into one device. Eventually the iPhone will cannibalize all iPods. The Touch will be around for a while longer depending on what sort of network and data infrastructure the future brings us.

I don't all the ipods will soon have multitouch. Some people still like controlling their music with a clickwheel. And some can't spend alot of money.

This is probably my favourite mockup that i've seen around, havent seen it on macrumors, jus thought i'd throw it into the debate.

But i would definately buy this :)
