Is there still a lot of active chat going on in this Slack page?
No idea. I had to leave. Slack is overzealous in their pursuit of making everyone upgrade to the latest. User agents weren't doing the trick and even had my SL Mac (which they don't support!) beachballing.

They patronize you by trying to tell you it's easy to upgrade. Sure, I've got a few thousand dollars lying around to upgrade a few PowerPC Macs and one SL only Intel Mac. Right.

Told them that if I never hear from them again it would be alright by me and that if I am ever in the position to recommend messaging software their software won't be the one I recommend.

It's aggravating because here at work we use a cross platform messaging system that hasn't been updated since 2008 or so. Runs on all versions of Windows and OS X and includes sending attachments. Yet Slack has taken an overaggressive viewpoint on this. Sure, I get they have some slicker features then this little messaging system we use but we don't need that.

Pretty disgusted with Slack.

I find the idea of having a chat cool, gather ppc macs fans from various parts of the world isn't easy to do, and this chat allows it. As regards the chat service we use, I was a bit upset about the thing we were moving from AIM (which is perfectly compatible with iChat) to Slack, which isn't even supported on PowerPC Macs. I mean that's weird as PPC Macs fans mostly use PPC Macs. But then I tried their android app, which is pretty good. The chat allows you even to send big files (I've tried with 50+ MB) and is always fast. I don't have "automatically update" enabled on my smartphone so the app version is at least of months ago, and it still works. Maybe it is just better to have chats on smartphones, as we have them always with us...

im curious what issues did you have browsing slack with the user agent switched? as @MagicBoy and I have tried it and have had no issues using slack via TFF... heres a screen shot of me using slack from my DLSD in tiger with no problems after changing the user agent :) maybe its the user agent you used? I used FireFox 47 OS X 10.9 intel and it works fine for me :) runs surprisingly well and this is with a stock install of TFF with no tweaks other then the user agent switcher.

I also find the idea of being able to chat world-wide great. I just don't care for Slack now.

Your argument that perhaps we should use our smartphones or devices is flawed I think though. The whole point of the chat about using PowerPC Macs.

Having engaged in the chat for quite a while before leaving I realize there are other topics that come up, but for me, not being able to use a PowerPC Mac in a chat about PowerPC Macs…well, it kind of defeats the purpose.

Yes, I could access Slack using my iPhone or my iPad, but these are not devices I use for extended conversations. That's just me.

If in the future, the platform changes again and it's something my Macs can handle I will be back. But for now…no.

@Gamer9430. Something you may wish to look over: https://www.flock.co/?utm_source=flock.com&utm_medium=301

It would seem that the creators of the Flock browser have diversified after their second failed attempt at dominance.

I've just glanced at this briefly, not sure it would even be usable or doable or not.

I was using Firefox 41 on my Intel Mac at the time with a useragent for FF 51 I think.

I had no issues logging in and no issues loading the page. However, once a page loaded and I attempted to interact with elements the browser froze. Other than my user agent none of my settings had changed. I even restarted Firefox.

That alone would not have been enough for me to leave, but the only reason I had switched to the Intel Mac was because Slack was somehow seeing through my user agent on the Macs I was using TenFourFox under. And it would NOT let me proceed unless I updated.

I wouldn't even be using a browser if Adium was working, but the reason I stopped using Adium was because it was not updating messages. And any messages I sent in the conversation didn't show up.

I like the chat. Everyone is great, but I kept getting obstacles thrown in my way for some reason.

I was sad to see us go to Slack too, I agree with @eyoungren that a chat about PPC Macs that doesn't work on PPC Macs defeats the purpose. Sure, Slack will work, but not as well as a native app like iChat.

Yeah, it worked for me too. And it works really well! Sorry to hear about your problems, @eyoungren. :(

I just wanted to chime in here and say that I'd like to join this, if we go back to iChat as the method.

However, I do also want to say that apparently I don't have a way to log into iChat on my PowerPCs anymore, because iCloud names don't work on there anymore, and AIM requires a phone number for creating a new account now.

Well, if you can't an AIM account, then it's better for you if we stay on Slack :D. The iChat chat used AIM and it's the only thing that works with iChat anymore.

I am in agreement with the many of you who are annoyed with the fact that Slack cannot be accessed on PowerPC anymore. It deeply upsets and annoys me that Slack made the decision to cutoff support based off OS, not browser. On that notice, I'd be willing to migrate the chat once again to a different messaging client other than AIM. Reason being is that AIM is a pain to use, doesn't sync back, and only really works well with their clients, which are awful and deteriorating quickly. So if someone can find a messaging client that will sync back messages, works on PowerPC, and doesn't seem to be meh in quality, I'd be willing to migrate the chat again.

That being said, my private chat for the foreseeable future will be staying on Slack as no one wants to migrate again, and several members have set up other chats through slack and don't want to add another app to their workflow.

Probably would have to be something with IRC as the only 2 clients I can think of are iChat and Adium.

I have been using Discord with some friends, and it seems to run just fine on PowerPCs running TenFourFox. Similar to Slack as far as features go, plus it's web based.

I am debating taking the plunge and getting an AIM account, since I want to use video chatting with some friends on my old Macs. Anyone know of a Jabber client that still works these days? Google Talk I couldn't set up properly.

@Altemose It isn't as active as it was when it first started, but it's not completely deserted either.

After I get through finals this week, I will definitely be spending more time both in the chat as well as on the forum.

AIM was posing significant issues when the chat first was started, which is what segued into using Slack in the first place (it certainly is not my favorite either). Sadly, I think we need to look at some sort of an option that we do not have to rely on any web interface for at this point.

google talk is about to be shut down permanently in the coming months, so thats off the table as well...

No point in moving to another web based service like Discord as the only reason we're making the switch is PPC compatibility :D.

Can anyone think of PPC chat clients besides iChat and Adium?

There's LimeChat but that's IRC too. LEM has an article on how to get Skype workig but that was about a year ago; does it still work?

I guess we could try Skype, although I'm not too fond of modern Skype on PC/Mac. I'll keep it in mind, but I think the search should continue for now.
[doublepost=1493734083][/doublepost]Just looking at what Adium supports to get some suggestions, ICQ looks like a good choice. Its AIM-compatible so iChat should work, there are apps for Android, Windows, OS X, and iOS, and there is web client access. I think this may work!
