The Max is so overpriced its ridiculous. Im sorry, the 800 iPhone 8 Plus can do the same thing a max can for much less. Until Apple ups the actual use of having the need for a big phone like the Max, its just a paperweight. I mean we are 4 generations in of having a larger screen iphone yet we still cant get split screen on this large iphone. I mean why cant I facetime and surf the web at the same time. Android you can video chat and still use the phone?

The 8+ is still a great value.

Besides the battery looking like its can’t hold a charge (89%) my X has no issues in terms of iOS 12. I would think the same goes for the XS

For me, the iPhone XS Max has been the best iPhone I have ever had.

I don't understand why so many forum members feel a need to preface criticism with their Apple purchase history, when it isn't even germane (I like that word a lot and I not even German) to the subject at hand.

Software isn't perfect and never will be.

iPhone performance on any given day is not linear.

If you haven't been happy with the use of your phone, try setting up as new. If that doesn't solve the problem, have Apple take a look at the phone. If you don't want to do that, sell the phone and get a $250 straight talk phone like your friends, and all of you can text each other, play games, and surf the internet together in the basement.

Problem solved in less than 5 minutes

OP could have a defective iPhone. Can't really summarize millions of similar iPhones or a company for that matter by a single quirky device.

IMO the Max is actually very competitively priced, as long as you buy the pricing on the X/Xs family. $100 upcharge for the larger display is reasonable, but that's assuming you thought the Xs was priced reasonably.

The MAX is my favorite and most capable iPhone ever.

My XS Max it great, best iPhone I ever had.....love it....

My Max is the best phone I've ever owned.

My Max is the best electronic device of any type that I've ever owned. It is a seriously slick piece of kit through and through.

Question for you all and anyone else who wants to chime in: why is the Max your favorite/best iPhone? Hardware capability? Display size/quality? UI/OS? Physical ergs? Camera? Other?

For me

Display size is the number one reason followed by camera improvements. I certainly enjoy Face ID much more compared to Touch ID.

I think that is about to change. iPhone business is in decline.

The XS Max is the best iPhone I’ve ever owned and I’ve had the 4, 5, 6, 6s, X, and XS Max. The only iPhone that’s ever disappointed me is the 6. 1 GB of RAM simply wasn’t enough.

I’ve been a fan boy since the 4 hit verizon (sorry ATT wasn’t in my state when it was an exclusive prior to then) and by in large I have defended, enjoyed, and purchased APPLE since then. The MAX series is a **** show. IOS 12 is the same. 12.1.1 was stable and life was great, after that it’s been a nightmare. They break more than they can fix. I sit next to my friends running a NOTE or any other device in my basement and the internet speeds are a Joke between my $1,300 device and in some case their 250 walmart straight talk device..... it’s laughable.... not only is price of product and the masses waking up going to hurt apple the whole XS launch is a disaster and the IOS 12 has been a mess.... annual upgrade of 5 here... seriously contemplating moving to android and that PAINS ME DEEPLY... we havent had decent working phones for three months.... I mean come on...
Same here, I was gifted an XSMAXX, for just $4 a month on my carrier. And Opted to give it back for a Samsung Note 9

For 4 Simple reasons

#1. It’s fails at being a Phone, Intel Radio chipset and antennas don’t get signal.
#2. Today’s world is all about texting and typing, There is NO way to enable Haptic feedback when typing. WTF Apple why?
#3. Display vibrancy. Compared to the Note 9 the XsMAX might be more accurate but is just dull, and no HDR where as the Note 9 is brighter has better colors and HDR. After all Samsung makes the OLED Displays for the XsMAX they just put better panels in the Note 9.
#4. WiFi reception distance you thought it was fixed with an iOS Update it wasn’t the XsMAx just wont get WiFi to the edge of my drive way. The Note 9 can.

Value is subjective for everyone. But to your point, no, the iPhone 8 can’t do everything the Max can, at least in terms of the biometric security with Face ID versus touch ID, that’s entirely different experience using Face ID for Apple Pay, ect.

Realistically, the iPhone 5.8 XS starts at $1000, the max starts at $100 more for the base storage, I really don’t think it’s that ridiculously overpriced, but is it attractive for every consumer? No, but for those who are wanting a larger iPhone size, they may see the value in that alone.
