Value is subjective for everyone. But to your point, no, the iPhone 8 can’t do everything the Max can, at least in terms of the biometric security with Face ID versus touch ID, that’s entirely different experience using Face ID for Apple Pay, ect.

Realistically, the iPhone 5.8 XS starts at $1000, the max starts at $100 more for the base storage, I really don’t think it’s that ridiculously overpriced, but is it attractive for every consumer? No, but for those who are wanting a larger iPhone size, they may see the value in that alone.

I don't like these prices, but as much as I use my phone (and you and many others too likely) for more than just phone calls, I can justify the expense.

I think it’s subjective to the person and it’s very much a feel good factor. Sure the Max offers a different type of biometric security but I think many of us can live without that right now if it’s going to cost hundreds more. I’m happy placing my finger on a sensor for now. The Max is a nice looking iPhone, but I think it’s priced too high to appeal to most iPhone users. It’s a phone at the end of the day and many here will justify it by saying they use their phones daily so it’s worth the cost. Great if that’s your mindset, but the reality is pretty much any of the current available iPhones are capable of offering the same iOS experience.

I think for the first time since the iPhone was launched we have users not shying away from the flagship device because they can’t afford it, but are asking why it’s worth it? That’s a view Apple needs to tackle and the only way they are going to do that is to sort their supply chain out and get costs down. Until then they’ll have to continue offering an XR and rely on that to drive their profits.

I do hope they lower their prices, but I am seriously happy with the XS Max.
Aside from the biometric, I can't stand the home button any longer now that I'm used to the swipe interface. This has nothing to do with styles or looking a certain way to me in public, since I don't give a crap about any of that lol.
YMMV, the 8+ would be my second favorite pick, and it's much cheaper (and a great value) but has a very crisp screen, nonetheless.

I agree I do think the iPhone X max and iPhone X are over priced but I bought one anyway as I had the money and sold my iPhone 8+ which every time I picked it up after having the max didn’t disappoint. I kept thinking how good a phone it is and wondered why I was selling it haha

I suppose it’s going to take a few years to convince people that the home button needs replacing and perhaps by then i’ll see a clear benefit or worthy reason for not having it. It’s a non issue for me much like operating a light switch. My next iPhone won’t have one but it’ll be a transition i’ll likely not think too much about. Having used the swipe/gestures interface too as a trial I’d say it’s different but with much of the same in terms of what it’s achieves. I’d rather not pay a premium for that right now as I don’t need it with any urgency.

vague rant, 50+ replies and the OP has not commented again, I think this is a good old fashion troll job folks. the OP is sitting somewhere enjoying his XS Max if he even owns one.

My XS Mas "was" the best phone I've ever owned to date right up until I downloaded 12.1.3

Right after that download, my XS Max would not or could not find the best LTE signal.

Over the last few days, things have seem to be getting better but the overall performance isn't close to the previous IOS software.

I believe the beta for 12.2 is out so I'm hoping things get back to "normal" for me... which again, was by far the best performing phone I've ever owned.

I really love the max! battery life is great unfortunately the signal isn't that fantastic for me. I swapped twice and still suffered the weak signal strength. Had to go back to the iPhone X

Question for you all and anyone else who wants to chime in: why is the Max your favorite/best iPhone? Hardware capability? Display size/quality? UI/OS? Physical ergs? Camera? Other?

Essentially everything you mentioned here.

- Display size is the largest ever despite the device footprint being the same as the 5.5" Phone
- Display quality is incredible
- Despite my doubts at the launch of the X, FaceID is so intuitive and fast that I forget my phone requires authentication to unlock half the time
- The camera is fantastic, although it's only fractionally better than that of the 8 Plus
- Design is gorgeous, especially in Space Grey
- Build quality is classic Apple (in other words, very good)

It's just a great phone, plain and simple.

I agree with all of this. I feel as though the speakers are so underrated though.

Pretty much all of the above. But what stands out is that I went from an iPhone X (which I loved) to the Xs Max, and after a week or so of questioning my choice of the larger form factor and trying to get used to it, I then became completely used to it, to the point where I don't even realize it's the "big phone" anymore. It feels just right, and the entire face of it is one big display. I love that. Not to mention that it is reliable and as fast as I could ever want it to be. And that camera. It continuously impresses me.

I’ve been a fan boy since the 4 hit verizon (sorry ATT wasn’t in my state when it was an exclusive prior to then) and by in large I have defended, enjoyed, and purchased APPLE since then. The MAX series is a **** show. IOS 12 is the same. 12.1.1 was stable and life was great, after that it’s been a nightmare. They break more than they can fix. I sit next to my friends running a NOTE or any other device in my basement and the internet speeds are a Joke between my $1,300 device and in some case their 250 walmart straight talk device..... it’s laughable.... not only is price of product and the masses waking up going to hurt apple the whole XS launch is a disaster and the IOS 12 has been a mess.... annual upgrade of 5 here... seriously contemplating moving to android and that PAINS ME DEEPLY... we havent had decent working phones for three months.... I mean come on...

Haven’t read full thread but go to ipsw.me select max download 12.1.1 ipsw and hold option down when hitting restore button in iTunes and point it to this file. Restore to it while you can. The “signing” window will close soon with 12.1.3 out

That’ll fix your problems. I agree tho apple software quality is a crapshoot of crap

For anyone trying to justify their $1500 phone, I can tell you that no other iphone released in the last 11 years has received as much hate as the XS series. And I'm proud of that. Apple needs to move forward with the iPhone 8 design, give us the home button and no notch. Only thing they need to do on the 8 is put the damn headphone jack back and I'd buy a dozen of them.

Not a TROLL THREAD.... my update to 12.1.3 didn’t do anything to fix the horrid WIFI on the devices. Also after reading through these to whomever pointed out the asinine claim when my buddies are over for poker and we compare speeds... we are all connected to my WIFI... arms length apart... should not be 250 meg down on a note and 55 meg down on this glorious 1,300 piece of garbage.. Also I feel a bit vindicated that 12.1.3 broke a bunch of folks altogether and bricked their phones and then the Group FaceTime bug all in a weeks time.... I’m not a troll just a really pissed off customer...also google wifi and LTE issues on the XS series 12.2... I’m not the only one this is literally a dumpster fire.... I used to love APPLE as much as the folks on here telling me to sell my phones and move on (educated and helpful insights by the way). Read the news... Apple the last three months has been a disaster and their software has matched that fact...

I happen to really like using my max. As there a few of them in my circle, I had the chance to chat about the user experience. I understand there have been posts about wifi and lte issues, mine does not have those issues...even with one or two signal bars. Could be some bad batch of phones that were produced.

Apple seems to be working to fix the issues and seems to be replacing affected units, but clearly it's not everybody.

Err no it’s got hate due to price and not by what it provides.

iPhone 8 design? You mean wasted space and too much bezel? I’m sorry that design is from the past and not what future phones should look like.
