Apple heard the complaints and said “yes, we meant to do that.”

My guess is that they thought of all the cable ends that have worn and broken over the years and intentionally decided they would make a mouse that couldn’t be used while dragging the charging cable around.

They really should have ridged the top of the mouse to create a standalone spot for the middle finger this time. 😆

The Logitech MX Master series have been my go to mice for almost a decade now. I am never going to switch to anything else. At least not something without a vertical scroll wheel which I use a lot.
What I think is sad is that a scroll up and down on the scroll wheel doesn’t mean ”scroll horizontally” if there is just a horizontal scroll bar like kan be the case in a digital workstation for example – one still has to hold down the shift key and scroll to do that.

The side buttons of a mouse should also be natively supported as ”back” and ”forward” in MacOS I think, like it is in that other operating system that starts with a W.

If you download Logi Options+ you can change all that.

Apple today updated its Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad accessories for the Mac with USB-C charging ports, but the accessories have no other external design changes. Yes, that means the Magic Mouse's charging port is still located on the bottom of the mouse, despite the switch from Lightning to USB-C.

The position of the charging port on the Magic Mouse has been the subject of a meme on social media since 2015, but Apple is clearly unfazed.

The augmented reality view of the new iMac on Apple's website confirms the bottom position of the USB-C port on the updated Magic Mouse, as shown above.

Apple includes the updated Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard in the box with the iMac, and the Magic Trackpad is an optional upgrade. The USB-C versions of the accessories are also sold separately in white and black color options.

It charges so fast and last so long. If you cant figure out how to avoid downtime (which is short anyway since it charges to 10% really fast and 10% lasts the rest of the day or week) its on you.

The magic mouse is still insanely popular even though it’s a terrible mouse to use. But because it’s so popular, it’s incredibly easy to sell it. You can then buy a cheap mouse, which is Ergonomically so much better with actual stable performance plus a little money in your pocket. Or you can use the money to just replace it with a truly functional mouse. Although if you’re buying a new iMac, it’s so much better just to buy the trackpad which really is very good.

I think there is this misattribution of it being bundled in so of course folks like/ tolerate it when it’s shown that people ride the defaults and work with what they’ve got. Does the average user deserve better? Apple says no and I vehemently disagree.

The Magic Mouse gets one hell of a charge compared to the Trackpad, in my experience. Just wish the charging wasn't at the freakin' bottom.

As we toast in the charging club: Bottoms up! ;)

However, I agree with others that this is no big deal. In a pinch- as I was just last night- put it on charge, go stretch your legs, have a bite or two, take a quick walk, etc, and then come back and you'll easily have enough charge for the day (or more if that bite was actually "or two"). Last thing that day: charge it overnight and you'll be good for a month+ starting tomorrow.

And I have a spare mouse from an older Mac in the desk drawer ready to substitute in a situation where I don't have time for a short break as described above.

That's no defense (I'm not that type). What I would like to see is a notification that pops warning of remaining battery and/or some kind of on-screen something (maybe even a tiny red-dot) alerting me to when it's at or below about 5-10%. Maybe turn the control center icon RED with a one-liner about low battery?
I can't remember what it says specifically, but I do get a warning to charge my magic mouse and keyboard when they get down to 5%.

Now apple is just trolling 😂
They are trying to prevent people from using it plugged in. Looks above usefulness, yo. Meanwhile, they could have given it mag charging and given the iMac foot a built-in Qi2 magnetic charging ring for charging it and other Apple devices without needing to use up one of the measly few ports, or needing a charging cable. Prefer wired mice and keyboards, myself. A professional wired keyboard and mouse setup with some additional ports in the keyboard would make for a nice utilitarian setup with some quick access ports there on the keyboard. How often do you charge your keyboard and mouse? gfy

It's still not an issue though. I love the Magic Mouse. If you can't find a few minutes to plug in your mouse once every few months, then what are you doing with your life?

Personally I like Apple's Mouse, particularly the multi touch surface that allows me to swish between different desktops or open full screen applications. Also is very useful for navigating large spreadsheets.

As many others have mentioned the charge port on the underside is not really a problem given that you have to charge it so infrequently. For those that are bothered by it, there are people that make charging docks for the mouse.

I should add that this is for the older lightning version - However I am sure someone will bring out a USB-C version.

The only thing that does annoy me is apple charging more for the black version. Really Apple c'mon.

Question is should a product like this exist or does it speak to an existential crisis and failing in the product itself

They want to be sure that people only use it wirelessly and don’t just leave the cable plugged to use it corded.

Different people will see this in different ways. My take is that it really is not a big issue in the first place, and secondly you can get charging docks for all sorts of devices to make it easier to charge for example to charge a PS5 controller, even though it is almost as easy to plug in a cable. Just because you can buy a dedicated charging dock for the PS5 controller does not necessarily mean the design of the controller is bad in the first place.

Now if you needed to charge the Magic Mouse every few days then I can see it being more of a design issue. The thing is you don't.

I think, PS5 charging cradle aside (Sony makes one), you make a valid point.
