It is the ultimate test. It takes a year before sites like imdb stabilize to a representative score. It takes raw numbers to overcome reviewers with an agenda.
The only thing is how much viewers is necessary for Apple to continue a series since it does not have commercial to generate revenue, whereas networks requires a certain number of viewers as they depend on ad revenue.

Most non apple product in the history of Apple, no hardware no software secret sauce. Just throw lot of money at LA people to make LA shows.. I won't be surprised if it comes from there PR/Marketing budget. No signal here, just noise.

Its really sad that Laurene Powell Jobs(till recently the largest shareholder of Disney) allowed this to happen. She should have sat down with Bob Iger and Tim Cook and ordered them to work together and pivot. There is no reason for Apple and Disney to go separate ways on this..

This type of misinformed (at best) opinion is why some of the hate

I guess as much. The criticism likely came from people with an axe to grind, who then went to the press in an attempt to hurt Apple’s chances to win over future talent or content deals. I pointed out the apparent disconnect on rotten tomatoes some time back and it’s nice to see this point being corroborated here.

Moving forward, I believe that Apple TV+ has enough content to grab tens of millions of subscribers. Assuming an annual budget of 2 billion and the average customer paying $50 a year, the magic number is 40 million subscribers. Should be quite achievable for Apple.

Using a curated feed of content revolving around compelling storytelling to get users to watch the TV app, in turn promoting other tv bundles and earning the subscription revenue. Granted, there will be detractors who still can’t wrap their heads around Apple doing original content, and think Apple should still be working on routers and cinema displays, but I genuinely think Apple is on to something with Apple TV+ and the Apple TV app.
The scores are open to interpretation. I would say that in this case the critics score should probably be less prone to being affected by the attitude towards Apple. As I understand, the list of critics is fairly stable and those were selected way before Apple TV+ times. The audience score on the other hand... Anyone can participate and the huge difference in scores seemingly indicates that some Apple fans took it personally to make sure to run up the scores.

Try reading the critic reviews though. You can see the Apple malice in their very words. They bring up irrelevant points about the service as a whole, when they should be composing holistic individual reviews of each show. Many other obvious biases are apparent.

Half the positive Audience reviews are Apple employees and their family, which was probably a required assignment at work for the week... JK!... or am I?

Isn't this line of argument akin to victim blaming?!?

It's not the show stinking. It's that the audience is messed up.
Except that in this case, criticism started piling on even before the shows were made available for consumers, and everyone was essentially going off the opinions of a couple of critics.

First, there was the talk of Apple executives wanting to sanitise the shows to make them more family-friendly. Instead, we got the opposite. See is downright gory, Morning Show is laden with F-bombs and had a sex scene in their latest episode, Dickinson has lesbians making out, and these rumours just feel to me like someone with an axe to grind. My suspicion is that there are people in the media space who want Apple to fail with Apple TV+.

Maybe Apple and its ~$80B of excess cash represent a threat to both the establishment and the new crop of players. Apple's desire to establish a central depository for consumers’ paid video bundles is a turn off for many companies afraid that Apple will grab too much power.

Maybe there are critics who think Apple is being extremely naive and arrogant in thinking that they can just waltz in and succeed with original content. So they try to overcompensate by being unnecessarily harsh to avoid sounding biased or "soft". I feel it's downright ridiculous that one of the criticisms of the morning show is that it has too many apple devices.

I think where Apple shines with TV+ is that each of their TV series so far has had a compelling story to tell. Morning show tackles the complexities of the MeToo movement, Dickinson shines light on an ugly side of US history, See challenges stereotypes surrounding blind people and might actually lead people to treat / see them in a different light, while for all mankind lets us view issues from a different perspective.

And this is my takeaway as someone who lives in Asia, and has zero inkling of US history. I haven't watched a show that made me feel this way in a while. In contrast, Netflix shows, apart from being extremely shallow and dull these days, don't really leave me questioning aspects of culture or society the same way these Apple shows have. This also probably explains why I haven't watched a decent show on Netflix in ages.

I think TV+ certainly has the content to grab the interest of tens of millions of subscribers. More shows will be added over time, I see the logic of them staggering their releases rather than dumping it all at one go like what Netflix has done, and the primary challenge is to keep the stream of high-quality content coming. Which I have no doubt that Apple certainly has the resources for.

Yeah, I was expecting the Morning Show to be pathetic, but it's actually pretty well done. Good writing and acting. It's a little too slick at times, not really honest, but it's a well crafted show. Certainly not Rotten. Something about the critics is Rotten though. I can smell them a mile away. Critics are a useless breed in today's world. They will ultimately fade away as a career choice. People can figure out what they like without those very "helpful" critics.

I'm a user and I give all these shows 10 stars out of 10. There are many positive comments being made in this topic here for you to compare to. I think that's a good sample size.

You're too easily pleased. :)

I've been watching The Morning Show and find it to be one of the more enjoyable shows available anywhere right now. I am curious to check out some of the other offerings, but with football season in full swing, my tv viewing time has other priorities.

How would you know that?

How do you know me? I'm actually not "too easily pleased." None of my friends, or anyone else in my life has ever felt that way. If anything, it takes a lot to win me over. Apple has just delivered and done that.

:)

I haven't seen the morning show, but have watched all the episodes of See. I can see why the critics panned it, as it's totally crap in reality, but it's still super fun to watch, and I am addicted. So it's weird, but I totally get it why the audience love it and yet the critics hate it.

Hey dude, im not a hater, but its very hard sh$%7.

AND im waiting for Apples grand fail to came back like phoenix.

A tv show is just that - a television show for entertainment value. You do not read deep into a tv show expecting to learn anything. Why? Because I'd just watch the discovery channel if that were the case. I don't want to watch some SJW bullSchiff about politics, scandals, etc. Something that reflects real life; instead just make shows that have tons of explosions, sex, and foul language and I will subscribe. Keep making crap like all mankind, some lesbian fake American accent woman is the hero nonsense, I'll be sure to let everyone know how dumb subscribing to Atv+ is.

The only great show so far is The morning show. Because it's un-apple like if you want to call it that - the language and sexual nature of the show. Keep it coming!

As for Netflix, they have tons of good stuff...black mirror being one of them! If apple can do a black mirror series that would be awesome.

PS - I'm not one who sits and watches a tv show looking for flaws or looking for why things don't add up. These critics are the worse they don't create jack sht but yet voice out as if they are Steven Spielberg calibre and their opinion matters.

Because you’re rating all these shows a 10 out of 10. They are all perfect? All of them? We both know that’s not true. Whether you’re hard to please in other aspects of your life I have no idea, my comment was only relevant to the topic being discussed.

Good to know the high priestess in See is more Apple-like!

That series SEE is so annoying - I mean I can still barely watch it by fast forwarding that pile of dung as well. I do not even get how this show is remotely "good". More black mirror series types, please. The morning show, however - that Jennifer Aniston - damn, never ever seen a single episode of friends when it was hot but while watching TMS, I really like her.

See is incredible. It is made for adult audiences, not children.

I do hope they step up and ends up being a good option with some great content, but so far I haven't seen anything appealing to me. The fact that I've had it for free for 20 days and haven't been compelled to watch anything there says a lot..... In the meantime I have watched The Man in the High Caste Season 4, The Mandalorian, Watchmen and Good Omens which I was missing, enjoying all 4.....I do hope the step up, they certainly have the budget and more competition is always good!

Wow, you probably haven't watched any of them.

I have given them all a fair chance. The writing is subpar. Apple TV+ needs to attract great writers and so far they have failed to make it a writers’ haven equal to HBO, AMC, Netflix.

the worst criticism I can give is that Apple TV+ quality is more in step with network TV than cable.

I'll say this — I have a small stack of awards screeners sitting on my desk and it's growing each day, but none of them are (yet) from Apple. If they want to get recognized, they need to increase their access and visibility among the folks who drive it, because there is a ton of content out there that viewers are being asked to consider.

It's certainly worked for Netflix (who I might add, has one of the more aggressive awards strategies, offering voters 3 free service months, in addition to physical screeners of some of their top entries and even those arrived early. And last year, their in-person screenings pulled out every single stop... food, drinks, interactive displays, commemorate blankets and occasionally David Harbour. Although to be fair, he may have just been there for the food and drinks...)

Apple just seems new to all of this and perhaps operates under the assumption that attaching their logo (and Steven Spielberg) to things entails some sort of obligatory praise, regardless of what follows. But they are starting from ground zero in this endeavor and all indications are that they are still somewhat behind the curve when it comes to navigating the ins and outs of content creation. It's going to take more than simply launching a service at this point to generate sustained buzz.
