So, apparantly the only way to get the gestures is to go out and buy a mac, install xcode and you're good to go. Perfect.

Yep, that's pretty much it. It really is kind of sad, because of all the features in 4.3, gestures are by far the best IMO. I just hope they don't get removed in 5.0.

I'm just wondering if there are any downsides or problems to setting your iPad as 'use for development'?

No.

So all you need to do is sign up through that link for free download xcode 3 and you will be able to enable multitasking gestures on the final build?

Yep, that's it. Now downloading and installing xcode isn't just a casual thing. It is vary large download and takes up a fair amount of space on your Mac. Plus make sure you find one of the previous posts that describe how to enable your iPad for gestures. I felt comfortable doing it because I've been playing around with Xcode for a while thinking about developing an app for my personal use (but hate the thought of paying the $99 to just do that).

Thanks, im guessing with a free membership you don't get beta iOS software?

So, this doesn't affect the syncing with itunes or any of that? You just go into xcode and activate this feature, then you can still sync with itunes as normal? Do you only have to activate the feature one time and it becomes a permenant feature on the ipad?

I've been wanting these gestures, thanks to those who are sharing this info, its very helpful. It doesn't look like xcode 3 is still out, but I'm guessing the same works with xcode 4?

Can someone please post a step-by-step on where to turn the feature on/off within xcode?

They only intended for this to be a developer preview. Apple just wanted to gauge feedback on the usability of this feature. I think they announced that it wouldn't be included with the release notes of beta 2 or something like that.

What I am wondering though is, how will this affect apps that support 4+ finger swipes? Take Fruit Ninja, for example. What happens when you use 4 fingers to swipe some fruit? Will the iPad multitask?

I suppose thats exactly why its not an available feature yet.

Can anyone tell me why this wasn't included?

It makes me think that there are issues, otherwise in would have made this cut.
Because it would then have to be enabled on the iPhone and a 4+ finger gesture on something that small is just silly.

Someone mentioned using a friend's Mac to do this. Does that mean that my friend and I can do this to both of our iPads using one Macbook? Or does this mess up what you have synced in itunes? I just want to make sure the two aren't interrelated.

Can someone please confirm that I can do this with two ipads that are setup on two different itunes accounts without it messing up those individual accounts?

Yes, you can do this to as many iPads as you like from a single Mac with Xcode, even if they all sync to different computers. Enabling this feature has nothing to do with syncing. You'll be fine.

Just to confirm that you can easily set your iOS device to Developer Mode using the new Xcode4. The procedure is different than before, but still easy.
Rn Xcode and click on Windows, then you'll findtwo options enabled. One of them opens a window that will list your iOS devices. Click on it, and follow the prompts click cancel when it asks you to enter a password (it may ask you more than once).

The gestures are definitely a huge plus, just three observations:
- Swipe gestures are harder to do with five fingers
- Pinching with four fingers is possible but very difficult and unnatural.
- There should be a gesture to close the app completely, so it doesn't stay in the multitasking bar.

I do love the feature, it takes a little to get used to it and stop pushing the Home button.

I'm an enrolled developer. Will I be able to enable the gestures on the iPad 2 running stock 4.3 or does it have to be the developer beta?

Yes it will. I've had it happen to me. I think this kind of issue is exactly why they haven't included it in the final release. It does get activated accidentally ay times and appears to have issues with certain apps. Having said that, I wouldn't give it up. I love the 4 finger swipe to get the task bar. :)

Is there any way to manually option the features to be enabled? My buddy has an Ipad but no Mac's, only Win7 desktops. Is there a way we can go into the file system and turn the option on? Thanks!!

None known.

Your buddy does not know ANYONE with a Mac?

If its anything near as useful as the 4 finger swipes are on the macbook pros, that would be awesome. i feel so disadvantaged when i use my fiance's regular macbook with no 4-finger swipe :(

Does XCode have to install anything on your iPad? If so, how much room does it take up?

Or is it a simple matter of installing XCode on your Mac and flipping a switch on your iPad?
