Weird- the multi-gestures were already enabled for me after I installed 4.3GM, didn't have to do anything in Xcode or even enable them in settings. Wasn't the case for any of the betas.

Are golden masters identical to the public release? I don't want to lose the gestures but kinda feel like I should install the public release... Nice to know u can still enable them

Boy oh boy, I've only had the multitouch gestures for a few hours and I'm already accustom to them. It is such a much more eligant way to move between you apps. I'm going to be really sad if I can't activate the gestures on the iPad 2 that I plan on getting tomorrow.

I'm highly suspecting that this multitasking feature will only be available for the iPad...

are there instructions for mac? Will this also work with the official release of ios 4.3 for the ipad tomorrow?

See post #39 in this very thread.

Official release of iOS 4.3 for iPad was a couple days ago. It works with the official release.

Apparently the gestures conflict with four and five finger gestures in GarageBand, so that's a good reason not to enable them.

Interesting. But since I have *zero* musical aptitude, and not much more interest, I won't have a problem with the gestures conflicting with Garageband. :)

Still, it begs an interesting question of which direction Apple will be going and whether there will be further alignment of gestures between iOS and OS X.

I downloaded the xcode and the gestures work great but when I sink my iPad I get a error message after the sink, not sure whats going on there and everything does sink so whats causing the message ?

There are non-Apple apps, like browsers, that use 4/5 finger gestures to do things like switch tabs. One - Atomic - has already been pulled by the developer and my guess is that he's updating it to remove that feature OR to put in a preference switch that allows the user to select whether iOS or the app takes precedence for 4/5 finger gestures.

And that is my guess for how it'll be handled when the gestures ship officially. Apps will default to letting iOS take precedence, but users will have the option of letting a given app take precedence when open. Just a guess though.

If it conflicts in GarageBand, that does suggest they're dropping the idea. :(

OTOH, they could always update the app... along with all the other devs who'll need to. It's not unprecedented to expect devs to update, of course, so maybe they're just having a nice long lead time on the gestures.

I love 'em. Pinch to close doesn't work so well, but it's so much easier to get at the multitasking bar, and to switch between apps. Think they'll drop pinch-to-close?

I won't have my iPad 2 for a week at best so I was wondering if anybody on here who is buying an iPad 2 tonight would be willing to test the gestures. What I mean by this is if they can still be enabled and also if you need a developer account to activate them? I tried enabling my iPhone 4 for development and it worked well without a developer account (Didn't get iPhone gestures was just curious to see if it would work) so my hope is that the iPad 2 will have the gestures as a possibility. Thanks to anyone who tries to enable them.

No thanks, I'll stick with Activator. Nothing Apple can do will replace Activator for me.

I've just installed xCode (3.2 which came with my OS disk) and have gone to Window => Organizer but my iPad doesn't appear on the left (Projects & Sources). In fact, there's nothing there.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Same thing happening here. Anyone have any ideas?

from a not technical person...does putting the iPad into
developer mode have any drawbacks or negatives that come with it?
can you later for whatever reason return to 'regular mode'?
thanks.

I just downloaded Xcode 3.2 and it was really simple to activate the multi gestures. The only con I have is I've caught myself trying to change the apps when on the home screen. Other than that I love it. Great feature!

I've been using it for quite a few days now, and have a few observations:

1- You never know what the next app is when swiping. You end up just swiping until you get the correct one. Unless there's an elegant way to also show the multitasking dock, or something functionally similar to the app switching bar in OS-X (cmd-tab), my suggestion would be to limit swiping to the previous app (which is the same function as repeating cmd-tab in OS-X).

2- I've noticed strange app behavior when swiping to switch that I don't see when using the multitasking dock. This might just be the fact that the feature really is still a beta.

3- It's unreliable. I find it sometimes takes a couple or several attempts at swiping to get it to respond (keeping fingers in the same position). Again, probably due to beta status.

4- The pinch-out to return to a home page is nice, but sorta awkward. I'm kinda neutral on that gesture.

Otherwise, it's a great idea, with the above caveats. I would like to see it mature see it arrive in a future update. For now, I've disabled it - mostly due to the unreliability.

You know you can swipe up to get to the multitasking dock right?

Yep, but it sort of defeats the purpose of the left/right swipe. As soon as you swipe laterally, the dock goes away.

I wish it did work better, as it seemed like such a natural fit with the rest the gestures.

I have not had any issues with reliability - for me it works flawlessly. However, I totally agree with your other two points. It is great for switching between 1 or 2 apps, but beyond that it becomes awkward because you don't know what's coming. Also, because it brings you directly into the app, it's not a great fit if you have some complex apps still open in the taskbar that you'd like to not re-open (for example Netflix, or a game). In order to switch past them, it starts to re-open them assuming it has dropped them out of memory. I realize you can still use the multi-task bar, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a 'fast-switching' gesture.

What I'd like to see is when you swipe left or right, for it to give you a cover-flow like view of the running apps, and allow you to quickly switch to exactly the one you want.

How you you unlink the device(iPad) from being a developer device? I don't see any kind of option for that in Xcode.

It works with iPad 2 according to some comments on my blog (see my signature). I cannot confirm directly as I have an iPad 1. But the commenter has maintained a steady presence on my blog over time, and seems both technically adept and honest :)

He says the gestures are noticeably quicker and smoother on the 2 (he has both).

If I had an iPad 2 I would certainly try it! Worst case you just restore it...
