Most people here just like to have something to complain about to justify not spending 2-3k on a computer they really don’t need.
Those who have a need for the power understand the basics of screen real estate and that this is a positive over the outgoing model.
I agree that there are such people, but the other direction is also true. There are people who, because they are on board with Apple, or because they are going to buy the product anyway, will make excuses for Apple no matter what. Then when Apple finally fixes it, they thank Apple for getting rid of something that they never truly liked in the first place. But they will say it AFTER Apple fixes it. Before Apple fixes it, they will defend whatever is there.

People are just whining about the notch because Apple gave them everything else they wanted so the haters have nothing else to complain about. 120hz, miniLED, thin bezels, HDMI, SD, MagSafe, Function keys, headphone jack (With an improved amp.)

I'm not really a fan of the notch just from an aesthetic standpoint and it seems like it's wider than necessary to accommodate the facetime hardware.

That said, the rest of the machine is just bananas so the annoying notch is pretty small potatoes.
I agree. they could have done a punch hole for the camera and that would have been better but the beast mode power WAY over shadows the ugly design (old g4...) and the notch.

I Ordered mine within the 1st 5 min. and now I am anxiously waiting for my UGLY power monster!

Incorrect. I currently use a 2015 15” and have been waiting all year long for Apple to announce these so I can finally upgrade. Get your head out of Apple’s rear.

With proper UI the notch can be hidden. With the deeper black of Micro LED it shouldn’t be that noticeable.
Again, if you need to go through the trouble of hiding the notch, what’s the purpose of even having it in the first place? It’s just one more unnecessary thing for developers to have to worry about when making apps.

The people who "have issues" with the notch don't understand how it's displayed. With ANY SOFTWARE OR APP there is a toolbar at the top. The notch sits WITHIN the toolbar so there is no lost screen space. People just don't understand and would rather complain because it's what people in today's society do.

This is simply not true. Your iPhone has had 1080p front-facing video for years and it's notch is much smaller. The iPhone notch mostly fits inside the newly-thin bezels of the new MacBook.
How thick is your iPhone ? How thick is the screen of a MacBook? There's your answer.

I hate the notch, don't think it is technically necessary, not even a Face ID camera. I bought the computer though.
Yes, because you are smarter than the engineers at Apple. This is comparable to peopel who think they know more than medical doctors who have been practicing for 20-40 years.

The notch is ugly. Stop defending apple what ever they do every time.
Then don't buy the product. It's just like anything else. Don't like it? Don't buy it. 99% of the people crying over the notch don't even realize it's not part of any software or app's usable screen. It's in the toolbar like the OP's screenshot.

Get a grip.

Don't let Apple gaslight you into believing the notch was necessary here. It was not. In a few years, they will shrink it by 20% and call it a "Revolutionary" achievement.
How thick is your iPhone? Now, how thick is the screen of a MacBook? I'll wait for your answer. Space is needed to add technology.

You telling us, that the toolbar isn't part of the usable screen. You wait until you see it in real life, if Apple went to the lengths they did, pretending it was a non issue, you can be sure it's obvious. I'm guessing Tim Cook signed it off, which says it all.

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm looking forward to trading in my M1 MBP and my M1 iPad and then paying the extra 300 to get one of the new 14 inch beauties.

Someone (or hell, maybe I'll just make one) will make a simple tool to add rounded pure black to the top of your chosen wallpaper so that the menu bar area is black to blend with the notch, while still having all the menu bar information visible, and I already imagine that will look awesome due to the mini-led screen. The notch is a non-issue for me.

Lovely design refresh!!

you know what? I have been waiting for a new MacBook from 1 year because I don’t have one and I use my iPad Pro instead of a laptop (which isn’t really the same thing). So I really need an new MBP.
Now I have to choose between buying a product I need but I don’t like or buying the old model. I can be disappointed.

Let’s assume price isn’t a concern.

Firstly, if you can do everything you need with the older model, then it doesn’t sound like you’d need the new one anyway. Theres no use paying more for something you not only don’t need but don’t like either.

Secondly, again assuming money is no object, try and think objectively. Let’s say you want to ensure this investment is worth it in the long term despite your current want/need. Weigh up the notch against the 120hz and the miniLED, as well as the rest of its improvements. Bear in mind that Intel is on its way out too. Does it seem worth sacrificing that for the sake of a notch? Or do you genuinely feel you’d be happier with the previous model and it’s lack of a notch (because the notch is ultimately what it seems to come down to here)?

This isn’t me telling you what to do it’s just food for thought.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Ugliness is subjective.

I personally don't mind the notch and I'm happy to get a bigger screen. Apple missed the deadline of FaceID on that notch, but its still there because of the economy of scale.

For all the notch haters, what would be your solution to the notch? I asked this question and heard, thicker bezel? Really? So, how would you embed a FaceTime camera on the screen without the notch?

Nah that’s not why I complain about it. I just don’t like it and think it looks ugly. At least to just be a camera. Now if it was used for Face ID and Center Stage then the compromise and ugliness would be worth it. But as it currently stands, no.

I will buy a 14" because it's fantastic, and because they gave us back a lot of things that we thought were lost forever. I still can't believe they're bringing back MagSafe, physical keys instead of that stupid, useless touch bar, and an SD card reader. Add to these the proper keyboard that they had already reintroduced last year instead of the butterfly crap, and you get a perfect laptop. I will buy one, that's for sure.
But I still think the notch is absolutely, utterly hideous. And for what? For merely five millimeters of "real estate"? Come on, give me a break.
I will live with it if I have to, but it's ugly as hell.

It would be interesting to take a look at five-year-old threads and see which users were fervently defending the horrible butterfly keyboard, or the touch bar, or the discontinuation of MagSafe, back in 2016. I bet they were more or less the same users who are now fervently defending the notch. Some people would praise anything that comes from Apple, no matter what. And their "arguments", if you can call them that, are always "some people will always complain", and "if you don't like it, don't buy it".
