General Backham Bashing

Having been to Madrid and watched Beckham this season playing for Madrid I have to disagree with all of this. He was easily one of their better players on the night and is one of the few Real Madrid players to come out of this season with any credibility.

I may have only watched one game but this article by a man who lives and writes about Spanish football is worth a read:

Backing The Best Midfielder In La Liga

The Beckham situation is strange. He was so universally admired when he first burst onto the scene, that the consensus eventually swung the other way till he was universally regarded as overrated. Now that it is almost universal agreed that he is overrated, he is now underrated as a result.

It makes sense to me anyway.

Made sense to me as well. Don't you think that us Brits do the build somebody up to be a hero, only so that we can knock them down later, so well? We just cannot seem to take it that somebody is succesful .... strange lot we are sometimes.

We do indeed. Even if he captains us to winning the World Cup this summer with a string of inspirational performances, rest assured it won't take long before the tabloids are on his back over something or other.

It's 2-0 to Ecuador so far and if Costa Rica don't score then Ecuador will have a better goal difference than Germany, which means a draw with Germany will see them playing England. It seems destined to happen. Unless Sven can pull off a masterstroke and engineer England to come second in their group. Perhaps a draw with Trinidad won't be so bad after all.

EDIT: 3-0 to Ecuador.

So assuming Sweden can beat Paraguay then England will definitely want a draw against TnT so that England and Sweden will be tied on four points because their match will be 3 hours after Germany plays Ecuador and England will want the choice to come second. If England beats TnT tonight, it's odds on they'll be playing Germany. The mind boggles.

3-0 ¡Que viva Ecuador!

I don't like to make predictions, but a Paraguay win over Sweden would make for a nice day for the S. Americans.

And, good luck to England.

How did Crouch miss that. Unmarked, in space, in front of goal, missed by 5 yards. And how did Terry save that goal. England may win yet but they are certainly making a meal of it.

Crouch.. :( Come on. I defended you!

England should still win..

Well, probably going to put the kiss of death on T&T now but geeze England are playing a boring game. Crouch looks off his game now, like a big, tall mass of flailing arms and legs. Beckham's not having a bad game but he's not getting anything through.

Terry's save was a ripper though.

I wonder what impact a just-barely-fit Wayne Rooney is going to have on the game if he comes off the bench because it's been pretty uninspiring stuff from the poms so far.

EDIT: The last time England scored a second-half goal in the World Cup was in the second round against Romania in 1998. That's a long time ago. GO T&T!!

2-0 England

*Bows*

Thank you. :D

Nice goal by Gerrard, and despite missing a sitter Crouch scores a far harder one..

BakedBeans it would be a massive relief if you didn't boast about the two Liverpool goals. :p

w00t! I am really starting to get behind England lol.

Excellent defending by TnT. Wonder save from Terry and an offside (by a couple of inches) goal by TnT England do look a lot less than the sum of their parts. But this could be a mixed blessing for England if Germany draw or lose against Ecuador.

Remember, Germany also don't want to face us.. They will be trying hard to win.

Well predicted, XIII – but although I failed to get the score right, part of my prediction was correct...

Get out of jail we did, and unconvincing it was. We'll need to improve if we're going to reach the quarter-finals.

On the plus side, Sven's substitutions worked well and it's good to see Rooney back. :)

Still trying to get sharp and match-fit. He doesn't look his usual self at all.

Strikers are sensitive souls who need to know they have the total trust of their manager. It's not looking like Owen is going to be in the right frame of mind to pull out in time. Especially as Sven has always maintained that Owen/Rooney is a done deal. Yet he pulls off Owen, then Crouch saves England's bacon. One thing's for certain, if Owen does play he won't be taking any penalties. Then again if England end up playing Germany, (which I think will happen) then Owen will want to relive the memory of his hatrick.

Where does all this leave Owen?
On the bench, very possibly. I'd guess Rooney will start on the bench against Sweden and come on in the second half. But once we're playing in the knock-out stages and unless Owen has a spectacular return to form, who would you play upfront – an unfit and unsharp Owen or Crouch, who's putting them away at the moment?

Right from the draw, this world cup had England-Germany written all over it. It's destiny. Sven has nothing to lose. If Owen shines against Germany then Sven will be a tactical genius hero. If Owen craps out then Sven won't give a toss, he's already got his £15 million from the FA and they've shafted him already so he wouldn't give sweet F.A.

Muchisimas gracias, Jaffa Cake. A true scholar and gentleman. ;) Sure, it was at home in high altitude, but Ecuador has beaten both Brazil and Argentina this year.
