A draw is good enough for Ecuador.
And a draw between Sweden and Paraguay will be good enough for England – tonight could see us as this tournament's first Group winners. ;)

Today's result in Group A means it's either Ecuador or Germany in the next round for us, and while both would prove to be tricky opponents my worry with Ecuador is that they'd be much more of an unknown quantity for us. At least we won't be playing them on top of a mountain, though.

Nice goal by Gerrard, and despite missing a sitter Crouch scores a far harder one..

Now if only henry didn't do that in the champions league final..........

....... Oh, what was that? he missed 2/3 total sitters? (point being, even the best miss and that the slating was far to early) Lampard missed 5 and nobody said **** all.. lampard.. meh, so overrated.

Personally I don't call a bloody hard volley "missing a sitter''

BakedBeans it would be a massive relief if you didn't boast about the two Liverpool goals. :p

Why would I want to do that? I support Liverpool and don't really like england (mainly because of the head coach)...

Liverpool 2 - 0 trinidad and tobago

w00t! I am really starting to get behind England lol.

I'll get behind them when sven knows what the hell he is doing.... Although he finally made some good substitutions today (ones that i had been screaming for for about 30 minutes).... one thing that needs to happen is for lampard to sit on the bench... and becks to play center midfield.

Fascinatingly if Sweden beat Paraguay, then England will have 3 hours to decide whether they want to lose to Sweden if Ecuador get points against Germany a few hours prior! Could be the perfect excuse to try out Walcott.

Ha!

Another Gunner scored!

Unless i am wrong, i think we (Liverpool and Arsenal) are the two top scoring clubs in the world cup so far (just a little trivia) (now edited)

Liverpool - 3 (Alonso, Crouch and Gerrard)
Arsenal - 3 (Rosicky, Rosicky and Ljungberg)
Werder Bremen - 3 (Klose, Klose and Frings)
Chelsea - 3 (Crespo, Drogba and Robben

thats if you count a player that has never played for arsenal of course ;)

Random and highly subjective observations

1) Seems like far more fans in the stadiums than the doom-mongers predicted, rather than corporate snouts in the trough.

2) Standard of 'minor' teams hugely improved over the years. I've been watching World Cups since 1974 and the idea that Australia, South Korea et al would be competitive and difficult opponents would once have been thought ludicrous. Overseas players playing in European leagues is probably the cause of this, and conversely, European and South American coaches plying their trade in Asia, Middle East, Africa etc.

3) Every World Cup, England seem to be surprised that it's hot. Why? It's always held in the summer, for pete's sake.

4) Brazil. I'm fed-up with the fawning worship and hope that they get their complacent and cocky grins wiped off their faces. Preferably by Holland. :p

With you 100%!!

And you bet I'd like to see us crash the Brazilian hype... ;)
We still need te get revenge...

But... I wonder if our defence will be up to it, IF we face them this time round.

and if you count the just finished season the you have to add Borussia Dortmund because of Rosicky and Koller

Indeed. I remember the Japan/South Korea finals four years ago, where scenes of England wilting in the oriental heat were accompanied with the reassurance that because the 2006 finals would be played in Europe we'd be alright with the climate.

Mind, given the fact that we also get really surprised when it snows here every winter, it isn't really any wonder the summer=hot weather thing has caught us out again.

Yeah but it's not raining, I thought the way you Englandish-types knew it was summer was because the rain was a bit warmer?

I have no real loyalties to a particular nation, but I rather support good football. To see the minnows shake up the status quo is perfectly refreshing. I loved the mid-match quote from the T&T coach Birchall that England were playing predictably .... its as though they [England] get their tactics directly from EA Sports AI team.

3) Every World Cup, England seem to be surprised that it's hot. Why? It's always held in the summer, for pete's sake.
When it was observed that the heat against T&T was not as high, a small caveat was quickly given that "of course, it is really humid down there." I writhed in embarrassment. 'Leaves on the line' anyone?

It's one of those unwritten rules; if no team is overall outstanding in the competition, it might as well be won by Brazil ... that outcome seems to upset less people.

This WC is less interesting than I would have hoped. I would be very surprised if I find my self being bothered about the quarter finals and beyond .... but I think I said that last time.

Argentina are having fun, today. 3-0@41 min. Could/should have been 4 had Crespo not got the offside call. Looking forward to the June 21 match against Holland.
