It's good to see Kuyt though.

He's playing on the left which isn't his favourite spot. Let's see how he gets on.

It's a smart move, imo, to be ready for either Portugal or Mexico with all bullets. It'll be good to see Messi and Tevez get some time and experience.
That's the fun part of having a game in which many players are rested, and that a win is not absolutely necessary. Good to see youger players on the pitch. IMHO Messi really is going te be huge!

Well, 0-0.

Not a result anyone would have liked, but I'm sure our confidence has grown with that performance against what is IMHO the favourite for the trophy.

It was a good, solid performance from the Dutch tonight. I'm looking forward to the possibility of an England-Netherlands quarter-final... ;)

Ooohhh.. yes, I'd love that!

We both have a tough match ahead of us though.... Portugal hasn't done us any favours the last couple of years. :eek:

A Holland vs. Portugal match should be yummy.
I don't see the Mexico side, considering their last two performances, being able to hold Argentina back.

So, any predicitons for the second round? I see the quarters ending up with Germany playing Argentina and England playing the Netherlands. Regardless, the next batch of games should all be quite entertaining, and there are no sure things (well, perhaps except for the Argentina game... :eek: ;))

This is where it really begins. No-one ever remembers the group games when the dust has settled.

I'm inclined to agree with you as far as those two ties are concerned. They'd certainly be a couple of mouthwatering matches. :)

Absolutely! But the ones leading up to those matches will be equally exciting I'm sure! ;)

Very true. Now it starts getting good. :cool:

Don't pull the plug, just yet, floyde. Remember, Argentina lost 5 times this year (Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Croatia). No te rindas, todavia. ;)

Given how poor certain elements of our performances have been over the past week and a bit, that's probably not a bad thing from an English point of view. :eek:

Hopefully they can move up a gear or two now things are getting really serious.

x, I hereby declare you an honorary mexican :D . But, being realistic, Mexico's performance so far has been mediocre at best. I don't expect them to win this next match (it is against Argentina after all), but I'll be satisified as long as they actually play the game and put up a good fight (they haven't tried that yet ;) )

Sitting here trying to calculate the scenarios for tomorrow's E Group.

Obviously, an Italy win and a U.S win and they both advance.
For the U.S., the other obvious is they have to win outright against Ghana.
No win, they pack.

With a Czech win then GDs start to play out since Italy would start the day at +2, so the winning margin of score would determine how much the U.S. would have to win against Ghana since they start out with a -3 GD.
If Italy and Czech tie, the GD with U.S. and Czech come about.

One question though. Upon a tie in points and GD, what's the next tie breaker to be considered? Total goals? One teams winning over another during the Group competition? Team hairdos? I think I need to get some sleep.

Come on Ghana. a 4-0 will do nicely, a 1-0 will be great... as long as you win.
Do you have some unsettled grudge against the US national team?

It comes down to head to head apparently

No, I just want them to be dumped out because their not very good.
Well if they draw with Italy and beat Ghana, that would make them good, or am I just missing something blatantly obvious...?:confused:

But they haven't beaten ghana and might yet go out of the tournament with 1 point. USA could even go out of the tournament without scoring a goal (themselves), that would make them very very bad.... Unless I'm missing something blatantly obvious.

Hmm, no, I think it's GF (goals shot) first and then head to head.

Yeah, Sorry, i misinterpreted the question.

this is actually how it works.

a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup.
