Wow, I can't believe the Aussies lost that way. I was rooting for them the whole game.

Good thing for Neill he's not Colombian. Even being an Aussie, he might just want to apply for asylum in Germany or England... there's gonna be a lot of pissed (and pissed off) folks back in Oz who aren't gonna be pleased with him giving up a stupid penalty.

The Univision commentators are adamant the Aussies were robbed. I think you will find the guy was on the floor and not in a position to give away a penalty. More likely the Italian number 3 and the ref will be unwelcome in Australia

Disgusting.

Just disgusting.

And the Academy Award goes to... Grosso! But in fairness, he should have never made it into the box to begin with.

On the contrary, I think Neill is our next national hero (and probably captain in the future). The whole finals he's played great and even the penalty wasn't really his fault as he didn't take out the guy, rather he tripped over him.

Anyway, disappointing, but still a great showing by the team. We could have won, especially with tiring legs in extra time if it had gone that far.

Considering the awful call against Italy earlier, I don't think the ref wanted the Italians to win, but rather he wanted the game to be over.

LOL! He was probably reading this forum...

Italians were lucky and get through. Now will face either Ukraine or Switserland. Probably the easiest quarter final.

.. and probably the most boring quarter final.

I'm hoping Italy get it together, score some amazing goals against Ukraine or Switzerland, and get their confidence up to get going through to the finals.

What is so disgusting?

Why did neill go down for hte challenge, the player is always going to go down when impeded like that. Lying down infront of a player is just no good.

Italians defended well after an unlucky sending off... If the Aussies can't beat a ten man team then the quarter finals isn't a place for them.

I'm not saying that Italy played wonderfully, but looking at the stats from the game, Australia didn't deserve to go on. They had more possession, but less shots and more penalties. I think Italy should have advanced sort of just by default, and they did, so...

I'm not.

They ususally are the worst team to watch. They don't miss confidence, they just don't like playing attacking football. Nothing new there.
I hope either of the two crush Italy (how unlikely that is... )

Well it is true that Materazzi's sending off was only a yellow card, however to answer your question what is disgusting is that with 10 seconds to go, the ref can award a penalty when it clearly wasn't. You can't cause a foul when you're lying on the ground, which Neil was by the time Grossy tripped over him. Neil did not bring Grosso down.

Macaddicttt said:
This is sort of off topic, but why are the Aussies called the Socceroos? Don't they call it football down there?
Nah, soccer usually. We have 3 other types of football so don't want to get confused. (rugby, league and afl)

And stats don't tell the match...

The penalty seemed dodgy, but no more dodgy than the red card.

Anyway, Australia did NOT deserve to win. What's all this being scared? Italy played the best football, they deserve the win.

Whilst it was a soft pen, it still was a pen as he was impeded by neill.

That red card seemed didn't seem dodgy at the time. That challenge looked very reckless, and looked to me like a straight red. Only after seeing the replays, did I change my mind and thought it was just a yellow.

And the penalty wasn't at all dodgy. That was a hideous mistake.
And given the fact that the give-away was rewarded with just 10 seconds to go, that bad decision made it fatal for the Aussies whereas playing wih 10 men only seemed to suite the Italian style football.

Just reading about it sounds pathetic enough. It's the only match I've not been able to view, so far, so I'm glad my eyes were spared. Still, I cannot stand games decided on penalties, debatable, OT or not.

He wasn't. Neil didn't touch him. In fact if you have a look at the replay, Neil was down after sliding in for the tackle, Grosso's foot was going to hit Niel but he decided to drag his foot over Neil's body. However it's the result that counts. Italy win but I haven't seen any commentator anywhere yet who thinks it was a penalty.

Sure the refs have consistently ruined games with crap decisions including Materazzi's, but FFS this is a decisions that decided the match, without any doubt.

Good defending by Italy though.

Yes, the winners were the ones not watching :p

As for the games decided by penalties... this one deserved it. ;)

1. They gave us a SPANISH ref. I live in spain, the spanish HATE the italians. I found the ref to be horrible, THAT WAS NOT A RED and he didnt call a lot of fouls, most of them commited by aussie.

2. SO we play boring football but its EFFECTIVE, no time to screw around points is what matter, you want a show go watch pro wrestling.

3. Not a PURE penalty but you CAN NOT obstruct a player in the area(its a rule), if it would have been midfiled it would have not been a foul but this was IN THE BOX.

Everyone stop whining, it was not cheap, the aussies palyed pretty damn dirty and FOOTBALL IS FOOTBALL, I'm sorry it is the way it is!

Damn it, I'm sick of people bashing the italians, we got through. ALSO we had to paly a longball game, aussies had a midfield of 5 and we had one of 3! NO ***** we couldnt pass it around we had to play long ball. We were grossly outnumbered in midfield, but it was our tactic. I am seriously thinking some people in this thread know JACK about football/calcio/soccer!

Sorry had to vent

1. if that ref hated the Italians, he would have never given that panalty

2. Football, like all sports, is supposed to be a show. Ofcourse you want to win, but you go to a game to enjoy yourself. If everyone plays boring football, then the game will loose many followers that has made this game so big.

3. You mean that if I stand in someone's way in the box, that is a foul?

Why do you think people bash the Italians when it comes to football?

Agreed (mostly). Nonetheless Australia was not the strongest side and failed to do anything with all their possession. Italy was obviously just waiting for a break or penalty shoot-outs. Australia lacked the courage/foresight to go for it when they were 11 against 10. They do not deserve to be in the 1/4 finals, and thankfully they aren't.

I'm not saying Italy played some fantastic football, but they remained in control of the game even when they were down to 10, keeping their opponents exactly were they wanted them. One can say what they want about Italian football style, but they have heaps of experience, are effective, and have a pretty darn good record in the World Cup.

However, the Aussie should be quite proud of their performance in the World Cup. Their previous matches were pretty good and they made it through to the final 16. Loosing to the Italians is always an honourable way out. :)
