1. if that ref hated the Italians, he would have never given that panalty

2. Football, like all sports, is supposed to be a show. Ofcourse you want to win, but you go to a game to enjoy yourself. If everyone plays boring football, then the game will loose many followers that has made this game so big.

3. You mean that if I stand in someone's way in the box, that is a foul?

Why do you think people bash the Italians when it comes to football?
1. I didnt mean the ref hated the italians, I jsut mean that I watched the match(im a bit biased) but I could clearly see fouls not being called.

2. When there is so much money and pride involved IT IS NOT to enjoy yourself, that is a very wholesome view of a sport which is supposedly very corrupt.

3. Not exactly but you certainly cant slide in and lay in his way, why did the aussie slide anyway, was he on crack!!!??? He should have kicked it out.

4. Cuz I read post from people like you, who are entitled to their opinion. Boring football I recall beating germany 4-1. Sure we are defencive but thats just us using our biggest resource. CANNAVARO and ZAMBROTTA:D

1. They gave us a SPANISH ref. I live in spain, the spanish HATE the italians. I found the ref to be horrible, THAT WAS NOT A RED and he didnt call a lot of fouls, most of them commited by aussie.

2. SO we play boring football but its EFFECTIVE, no time to screw around points is what matter, you want a show go watch pro wrestling.

3. Not a PURE penalty but you CAN NOT obstruct a player in the area(its a rule), if it would have been midfiled it would have not been a foul but this was IN THE BOX.

Everyone stop whining, it was not cheap, the aussies palyed pretty damn dirty and FOOTBALL IS FOOTBALL, I'm sorry it is the way it is!

Damn it, I'm sick of people bashing the italians, we got through. ALSO we had to paly a longball game, aussies had a midfield of 5 and we had one of 3! NO ***** we couldnt pass it around we had to play long ball. We were grossly outnumbered in midfield, but it was our tactic. I am seriously thinking some people in this thread know JACK about football/calcio/soccer!

Sorry had to vent

Sei italiano? I miei parenti erano italiani e adesso studio italiano all'universita'. Perche' non avevamo parlato in italiano su questi forums prima di adesso?

(Scusa se il mio italiano non sia molto buono, ma solo ho cominciato imparare italiano due anni fa.)

2. Football, like all sports, is about money. Players are paid to win to keep their sponsors happy. At the end of the day if team X wins, nobody gives a f*** if it was a boring game (except maybe the loosing team). If you want to see a show, go to Broadway on the movies. ;) :p

Everybody said England played boring rugby in 2003. Who gives a f***? They did their job, they won the World Cup.

Don't feel bad about it, your (written at least) Italian is way better than mine. :)

I can speak pretty well to myself, but when I'm speaking to someone else, I get all nervous and tongue-tied...

I'm hoping a semester abroad next year, taking classes in Italian, will boost my confidence.

I hope either of the two crush Italy (how unlikely that is... )

Not too unlikely. Italy struggled against the Aussies, I feel the Swiss would be a hard match for them.

It is about money, because so many people watch the game.
And why do so many people watch it? Because it is supposed to be enjoyable.

Take it into the extremes: if all games were so boring, and only the result matters, then no-one will bother watching the game anymore. Result: less sponsors --> less money etc.
It will probably never happen to World Cups etc. because of national pride, but it could happen to Champions League matches.

It is also culture, and differs from country to country. Here in Holland we criticize van Basten because the Dutch team also plays less entertaining football than before, even though the results were brilliant. All football related talk shows here were saying the same thing: Yes, we are having good results (up until yesterday..haha), but we don't like the way we achieve it. So, in Holland we do give a f*** ;)

We certaily did not struggle, aussies had 2 shots on goal, with 10 men. 1 thing is struggling another is playing discretely. But I do agree we did play great.

Do you mean didn't?

You did struggle, despite the statistics. I don't care what the stats say - you were very close to going into extra time with Australia, and who knows what could've happened. The fact is you didn't turn those shots into goals, and if you can't do that, then you are struggling. I would also describe England as having struggled with Ecuador yesterday - similarly to you.

Trying to be as objective as possible here, I honestly don't think Italy was struggling against Australia. Sure it wasn't a walk over and Italy wasn't fantastic, but they kept the Aussie where they wanted them, even when down to 10 men.

Surely you have to admit though, that there is a problem when you are seconds away from going into extra time, and can't score in 90 minutes. That's not where they want to be.. thus I think its fair at least to say that the game didn't go as they wanted it to - perhaps saying they struggled is a little bit harsh.

ok sure, now that you think of it, you are right, to a certain extent. But im saying we played our rythem(while we had all 11 men) and did the best we could but a big chunk of the struggle was the refs fault. I would have given a red to cahill for a number of things, handballs, mouthing off, facing off with gattuso and a number of dangerous tackles.

Ofcourse Italy struggled...
Not being able to score in 90 mins, means you struggled.

The Aussies also struggled. But they were the underdogs, and were expected to "struggle".

Ok, fair enough. Your rhythm was there, and I suppose you did have 10 men for a period - makes scoring hard. I won't really discuss the refereeing and its impact on the game - You may feel cheated by the red card, just as Australia will feel cheated by the weak penalty.

Agreed. However it seems that in this World Cup the refs are the ones ruining the show. I think that Portugal v. Holland is a fine example of that. You can't blame the players. If they can take advantage by "falling" they will. It's part of the game (unfortunately).

You must put things into context! We were down to 10 men and could not take the risk of conceding a goal. I think that if we stayed at 11 men, the outcome would have been much different. :)

Agreed to a certain extent. We have to accept at the moment that players will fall, and try and take advantage of situations (I don't like it, but it happens).. and the referees haven't been, on the whole, sharp enough with their decisions. Some referees have been too petty, giving out yellows for anything, leading to a lot of sendings off. Some have been giving soft freekicks/penalties.. which influences the result of the game. I really don't like how the tournament has been refereed so far.

Yes, ok, I concede you had 10 men.. but (not discussing the refereeing here), it can be argued getting a player sent off was your fault, and thus you did struggle - the sending off was part of your struggle.

It's all over.. Italy moves on, as they will continue to do. Move along..

Yeah... remember that penalty and red card against the Ukraine (versus Spain)?

Bugger.

Yep, we lost. And that sucks.

Frustrating that we couldn't get any shots in but we dominated the possession of the ball and were by far the more physical side.

I'm so sick of seeing these soft players diving around like little girls just because someone is bigger than them and bumped them a little bit.

This is the reason football has never really taken off down here, we don't respect nor admire players who fall down at the drop of a hat and whinge and moan to get penalties. This current Socceroos squad may have been disadvantaged by the brand of football they play but it was tough, strong and most definitely not dirty. So long as the game is dominated by long-haired pretty boy pansies it will never be as popular as it could be here.

Well done Australia, you came a lot further than I had given you credit for.

And to you, World Football, time to toughen up.
