Yep! Would be nice to see one goal each orso. Ya know, pass some time until the shootouts :p :D

Let's not ask for too much. :p :D

<bad sportsmanship>this is going to tire them up nicely for their next match v. Italy</bad sportsmanship>

That had to be the most boring 90 mins of the entire tournament. I'm only bothering to watch it because it's in high definition

LOL

Three posts dedicated to that yellow :D

To be honest, I hope this one goes to penalties. As a neutral, I love the drama that goes with it. And neither team at the moment really deserves getting into the quarters.
As someone who played most of his 18 seasons of youth football in goal I despise PK's w/a passion. Personally, I think it should be corner kicks rather than PKs. I don't like how a team game comes down 1-on-1, especially when there is no legit reason why the kick taker shouldn't always score. I mean, seriously, you know its way to one sided when the keepers always break the rules (coming off the line before the ball is kicked) but are never called for it

Hmm.... at least you have HD.

I can watch it on Nederland 2 (Dutch TV, 4:3), BBC One (16:9) or ZDF (German TV, 16:9), but alas no HD for me.

Argentina - Mexico had extra time?
Yes, Argentina vs. Mexico did have extra time.

We're getting ALL of the games in HD here... or would be, if TimeWarner Cable in Charlotte offered ESPN2-HD. Luckily, the Round of 16 games have all been on ABC-HD or ESPN-HD, and probably will remain that way for the rest of the tournament.

I understand the feelings once you're invloved.
I mean, what's worse than your team (either you're playing in, or are supporting) get kicked out of a tounament on penalties. As a Dutch football supporter, I have seen our side get beaten by penalty kicks more often than not, and it is very frustrating.
But, from a neutral's POV, it is gr8 spectacle. The drama, and the HUGE amount of pressure on the kicker makes it superb viewing.

I always thought that the goalkeepers were pretty fond of these shootouts. As you said, the kicker is the one expected to score. It is the goalie's chance to become a hero.

As an English footballer supporter, I share your pain. ;)

Pointless Jaffa fact... my parents were in the crowd at the first ever match to be decided on a penalty shootout – Hull City vs Manchester United in the Watney Cup semi-final, back in 1970. We lost of course...

Do you remember Italy vs Holland during the European Championships in Holland and Belgium in 2000?

We had two penalties during the game against Italy, and missed both. Then no score after 90 mins, and 120 mins, so penalty shootout.
There we missed 3 more....

That really must have been the world record worst penalty taking squad ever

Ooohh.... do we remember Beckham's...

Nice bit of trivia BTW, Jaffa! :)

Now that IS bad. Really. :p

I feel you're pain.
Still, Baggio missed in a World Cup Final and lost us our 4th star.

I'm sure I remember reading that England are the world's second worst nation when it comes to penalty shootouts – the only nation worse than us are the Dutch.

Well done. :)

Yes, thank you. It is a record we hold proudly.

Too bad we don't face eachother in the quarters. It would have been such fun to have had the shootout then....
I bet the country who score FIRST would have gone through. :D

Yep, something to tell the grandchildren they keep nagging me to produce for them. :D

Interesting substitution from the Swiss – they've taken off their key striker (and leading goal scorer) minutes before a potential shootout. Curious...

Well, the one's that miss those penalties the most are the high profile strikers.
Baggio was mentioned, what about Beckham, and as for us:
Cruijff, van Basten, Kluivert (to name a few) all have missed. And all resulted in losing these shootouts.
