Meanwhile, over in Lucerne... Italy, France, Holland and Romania all in the same group for Euro 2008. Good thing England aren't there; they would have been quaking in their boots. ;)

Personally, I was hoping for a nice home tie against either a top Premier League side or some non-league outfit – either way, the cup is always a good opportunity to see a team you've never seen play in the flesh before. Plymouth away (a club in our division and at the other end of the country) wasn't really what I was hoping for. ;)

it is now Liverpool 3 Bolton 0 :D

Apparently we all need to watch Match of the Day tonight to see Anelka's open goal miss.

Diouf seems like he is lucky to be on the pitch according to the commentators.

guess who's got a big smile on his face... well, up to half time any way...

Oh and that was a stonewall, dead-cert penalty :D

so as it stands (liverpool winning 4-0) that's them up to 3rd and the mighty Blues up to 12th :D

Balon d'or... someone please explain!

There seems to be some kind of stupid setup for all these Player awards. Take for example the recent Balon d'or (European Player of the Year). The 3 shortlisted are Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi. Apparently Kaka has won it, (see below) Ronaldo second and Messi third (I dont agree with that but thats another story), so what is the point in having the World Player of the Year with the same 3 players? Its obviously going to be the same order of Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi.

"France Football magazine has announced the expected results of the Balon d’Or award for 2007, with Brazilian Kaka coming out top in the French publication’s highly regarded award that has been held annually since 1956. He got 444 votes, while Messi came third with 255 votes, narrowly edged by Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United who got 277."

And what is the difference between the World 'Player' of the Year and World 'Footballer' of the year, apart from one is voted for by coaches and players and the other is voted for by a french football magazine? Whats all that about?

By the way Messi should of won hands down. He is by far the best player. If it goes on what trophies the player wins its more of a best player in the best team award dont you think?

I wonder if it matches Ronny Rosenthal's miss against Villa from 92. :p

There were comparing it to that, although I personally can't remember that, I was only 8 when that happened and as such MOTD was one too late for me to stay up for. Although youtube comes good again.

Now I have something to compare it to.

Nah... it wasn't anywhere near that pathetic... but a very poor effort, indeed...

When I was in Malaysia and Thailand over the summer I was shocked by the sheer amount of premiership football they get to watch. I am assuming you get coverage of lots of matches as well. It is unbelievable that in the UK, where the matches are actually played, we don't get to see the same games.

If the argument that people will not go to the matches comes up then I am glad because that means there will be a seat for me at the matches. And the only people who will probably think like that are the people who turn up 5 minutes late go to the bar/toilet/whatever 5 minutes before half time, then come back 5 minutes late and then leave 5 minutes early.

Nah... not really... it was just dumb luck... with dumb being the operative word...

Most of the commercially interesting football (and English football is the most popular, by far) has been moved to pay TV, and the open channels just show highlights from a few games... but, since Liverpool and Man Utd has large fan bases in Norway, those clubs almost always feature in those quick clip rounds... as with the match today. So, naturally, I didn't get to see the goals from the Tottenham - Birmingham match... :(

But, then again, I don't really care enough to pay about £300 a year to subscribe to Canal+. ;)

Of course there's Eurogoals on Eurosport, but who cares about that...? I don't even know when it airs... :)

Wow, Torres is a beast...he and Gerrard are working together beautifully.

I really wanted to see a Crouch-Torres partnership and unfortunately we didn't see any goals the from the lanky striker today despite a few good chances - which means Rafa will banish him to the bench again.... Babel looked sharp as a sub, and could have had two goals but for a nice block.

Anelka's miss... I think I could have put that one in.

Torres is class, so is crouchie. I really like Babel and he is leathal but having seen him play there are a couple of things that he needs to work on. Firstly he is a bit lazy, doesn't seem to have the confidence to skin players (which with his pace and skill would be easy), and he seems scared to shot. On Wednesday night he had a couple of great opportunities which he messed up as he was looking for a pass rather than the shot which the whole crowd was waiting for.

Glad HK is coming back and the more I see Benayoun the better he gets. Shame they didn't show Hobbs on MOTD as the radio commentators were loving him. Lucas is also developing well. Even though Hyypia scored we need Agger back and a new defender in the transfer window.
