Relatively expensive, but we need a good defender.

The Newcastle job has to be seen as an unattractive job - who's to say that the new manager will last till next season?

6.5M quid - a steal for a 23 yo full international.

He's huge (1.91 m (6 ft 3 in) ) and I've heard tatooed out the whazoo (quite intimidating.)

Oh, I agree it's a good deal (assuming he adapts to the Premier League). It's a good chunk of cash for a defender, but for a club with Liverpool's cash it's business as usual. Can't wait to see him in action - unless Rafa makes him ride the bench next to Babel and Crouch for no apparent reason.

My guess, he'll be on the bench at the Riverside on the weekend. Hopefully bring him in to give Agger a breather (on/around 50-60')

I hope you're right and we see him on the weekend.

BBC reports that Sissoko will go for 10 million. I was hoping it would a be a little closer to the 17 million Mascherano will cost but 10 million's still a lot of money considering Momo's recent crap form. Maybe he'll do better at Juve.

Man U deny they'd ever sell Christiano Ronaldo, amid rumors of a colossal 50 million pound offer from Real Madrid. I can't see him leaving for anything short of a major personal issue with the club, he's at the top of his game and fighting for league titles.

Do you reckon Martins is actually 23 as he claims?
He always looks older to me.

At least I'm not the only one that thinks that.

I can remember him scoring a double for Inter in the Champions League a fair while ago. According to Google that was 2003, which means he was 18. Fair enough... But it's simple... He just wasn't, he always looks a lot older, and they [Newcastle] did doubt his age when they signed him IIRC. I'd put him at about 25-27 now.

Maybe they'll have to look abroad for someone who they can con about their 'Champions League' status.
What about Jol or McLaren? Jol's not bad and McLaren can return to the mid-table where he left Middlesborough.

Thing is, I can see the attraction of the job. Newcastle have done nothing for years, and the manager who can turn their fortunes around will be regarded as a hero. The challenge of succeeding where so many top managers have failed could be hard to resist for some. Mind, I think any manager with any sense would give it a miss – especially following the Allardyce debacle.

The problem is the massive over-expectation of the support and media, players who aren't up to the job, and an ingrained mentality where failure has almost become expected. In many ways, it's the club equivalent to the England manager's job...

In their current situation, not even The Special One could turn their fortunes around before getting fired by a trigger happy owner. They made their bed, and now they have to lie in it.

Liverpool once again rescue a draw in a game they should have won 2-0. Gah. With Gerrard playing like ***** right now Torres is our only threat...just keep 10 men on him and you'll be fine against Liverpool. It's some consolation that Arsenal drew as well, but Chelsea won and I'd have to believe that United will take all three points today against no-hopers Newcastle.

Anelka seems to have looked sharp for Chelsea.

Jeez - the Mancs knock SIX past toon.

I've said it elsewhere, if I were Liverpool manager, Carragher is my new captain after Gerrard's attitude (more so than his performance) today. Voronin, once again showed his complete lack of killer instincts and the same goes for Kuyt.

Sheesh

Poor Newcastle...I think we all knew they were ripe for the slaughter though. What I still don't understand is why so many Newcastle fans are still calling for Shearer. He doesn't even have his manager badges!?!

Barring some factor we don't know about, I still have no idea why Kuyt and Voronin continue to be started and Crouchy doesn't even make the bench. What the heck is that about? At this point I don't know what I'd do to shake things up at Liverpool...it's a shambles and we don't deserve to finish in the top four the way things are going.

With college football just ending and the NFL playoffs going on, how can you guys possibly think about soccer? Soccer!???

::ducks:: :p:p

I'm one of those freaks of nature, an (aged) United fan who has never taken to Ronaldo. Don't get me wrong, the boy's a bit more than special, but I'm certain he feels no loyalty to the club whatsoever. True, he's not the first ego maniac to play for United, but others - like Best, Cantona and Beckham - genuinely adored the club.

So, I'm 100% convinced he will leave much sooner than anyone thinks, he's already made it clear his ambition is to play in Spain, especially for Real Madrid. (That tells its own story - but I'm biased: if you want to play for a Spanish club with a soul you join Barcelona; if you want to join Hollywood FC you go to Madrid).

I think he (and his agent) will engineer the move soon enough, maybe even this summer - if not, the summer after. United's quality and status won't persuade him to stay, he's after the lifestyle, the continental glamour, the climate, all that crap. And, of course, a signing on fee that would top the GNP of half the planet's nations.

We'll see....but I'm convinced he'll be gone soon enough.

well Newcastle have improved since Same got the boot

But what can I say about the mighty Blues, ermm, we need to buy some defenders, god knows how we managed a draw against Arsenal... Still not to moan...

Easy. Most of us aren't American, so strange as it may sound we actually prefer soccerball over your more parochial pastimes. ;)

Hull were unfortunate I'd say.
I'm not too downhearted, despite the defeat. 2-1 would have been a fairer result and reflected the match better – as it were their third goal was literally the last kick of the game, scored on the break after we committed everyone forward in search of a last gasp equaliser. Myhill managed to get a hand to it but it wasn't enough to turn it around the post. Ah well.

Last night's game was always going to be a bit of a test of our credentials in this league – we're doing well at the moment, but how would we fair against one of the division's top teams, one who are most likely going to be champions next May? Well, the answer is we didn't do too bad at all. The difference ultimately was their better finishing and class, which is to be expected from a group of players who were playing Premier League football this time last year. But we gave a very good account of ourselves, I feel.

The result leaves us tenth, which for a team who spent all of the previous two seasons battling relegation isn't a bad place to be at all. No complaints here.

And of course, we never expect to win when the Sky cameras are in attendance. Bloody Sky. :D

College football isn't on TV, and it probably isn't very good; I know my college isn't.
I can't bear the thought of ever watching "NFL", no, "American-back-to-front-women's-rugby" again in my life, I'd give good money to get back those hours.
How a game and stop so much, involve such tight trousers and be so incredibly boring I'll never know.
And I can think about football as much as I like, thankyou very much.
Gr, I can't stand the 's' word.

I'd cut my leg off to never see him again: he irks me something chronic.

Just thought I would correct that for you ;)
