I think it's a stupid idea to limit foreigners - if there aren't enough English players then spend more effort developing them instead of shutting out good foreign players, who would go to La Liga, Serie A or the Bundesliga instead.

And what about Swansea and Cardiff? Would they have to fight tooth and nail to get Welsh players?
Well, technically when stuff like this is considered I think they're classed as English teams as they play in the English leagues and everything, so I would think that they'd be limited to English players. But either way they'd be at a disadvantage – if they were classed as English then they would have to count any local youngsters they have as foreign (which goes totally against the idea of this proposed rule), whereas if they're classed as Welsh then that would put them at a disadvantage in the domestic transfer market.

I've said before though, that the real winners would be Chester City, whose ground famously straddles the Welsh/English border – they'd therefore have to pick six English and six Welsh players in their starting line up, giving them a numerical advantage over their opponents. ;)

Out of interest, I checked Hull's line up for their last match – of teh starting eleven eight were English. Phew!

Who wasn't?

Pederson - Danish
Ricketts - Welsh
Garcia - Australian

and can we add Myhill to that list as he is half American?

This is the problem with the system. You are going to get more poor level foreigners coming and claiming British nationality, or clubs are going to lure 10 year olds from other countries so by the time they are 18 they can be an English national. It will cause more trouble than it would prevent.

Those are the three I counted. Myhill – despite being born in California – is classed as English because;

  1. His mum's from Shropshire.
  2. He's lived in England since the age of one.
  3. He's represented England at various levels up to Under-20's.

We win some, lose some though. Sam Ricketts is English-born (he's originally from Aylesbury) but decided to play for Wales because he qualified through some relative or other, so he's counted as a proper Welshman so far as our Johnny Foreigner tally goes.

That's a point... Arsenal are often held up as an example of one of the teams who would suffer if such a rule was implemented – but would the foreign youngsters in their academy be able to claim English citizenship by the time they've worked their way up to the reckoning for the first team? Maybe they wouldn't do as badly as some people think. Of course, it would then follow that they couldn't represent the country of their birth at international level if they got a British passport...

I was a little surprised at the 4-1-4-1 formation, I was expecting two strikers. Maybe Capello doesn't think England has two starting-quality strikers.

I don't know, Chelski typically play Cole in a very advanced role. If Barry's doing his job, should free Stevie G to get forward more quickly.

Looks like a poor first half so far from England. I expect to see changes after the break.

In case anyone cares, Martin Petrov has scored for Bulgaria against Northern Ireland in a friendly being televised online for free by the BBC (crappy small stream but better than nothing).

Wales must be pleased today... beating a even-poorer-than-usual Norway 3-0!

Carl Fletcher and 2 x Jason Koumas.

Didn't bother watching the whole game, but from the little I saw it was well deserved**...

** Yes, I'm Norwegian, but Norway, especially under the last two coaches have been awful: unattractive and lousy.

So yeah, that friendly showed up perfectly how ****ing awful Ashley Cole is. He was terrible from start to finish. Wes Brown wasn't much better...

It's funny how Wales always seem to have good players in positions that England always struggle. England haven't had a left proper left winger in 15 years, Wales had Giggs. England now are struggling at full back, Wales have Bale and Gunter. (Although I guess Richards would have been at right back if fit)

Why Brown was playing and not Richards I will never know. Cole wasn't too good, but in my opinion Brown was worse, much worse. He gave the ball away far to often in dangerous areas which put England on the back foot. Mind you he was a bit better in the second half.

The big question is, how will Ashley Cole adapt when he has to play away? ;)

Because Capello picked the side on what he was seen since he arrived in England, and Richards has not been in the form for City that he was for England under McLaren.

I thought Brown was poor yes, but Ashley Cole was without doubt a lot worse. However, when playing away Ashley Cole will come into what he knows best.

Yeah, I kind of thought that. I'm surprised the number of clubs they are saying have, have agreed to it. Especially after all the moaning they do about the Christmas fixtures.

Yeah, but the owners don't care about how tired the players are, all they care about is $$$$$$$$$$.

Yeah, but it's got to go down the line as well, because managers will just take their reserves and youth teamers.

Oh no, another game where it isnt possible to loose against Arsenal. You'll either be beaten by kids, or you'll 'only' beat their youth team. *Sigh*

Also I can't see FIFA being happy about this, they've been trying to reduce the number of games English teams play, not add to them.

Also, what if say Chelsea beat Arsenal to the title by 1 point because Arsenal had to play Man U in the 39th (extra) game and only drew, whereas Chelsea played Bolton and won. So, that over the standard 38 games Arsenal had 1 more point than Chelsea but lost the title because of the extra game.

Would be interesting to see how many people would show up in a foreign city to see the exciting 'Boro - Bolton matchup.

 Oi! Being a Boro fan meself I have to call that. The best games are invariably those that don't involve two of the so-called "top teams" - like the cup final between those same teams 3 years ago. What makes a game is the indeterminate nature of the result. Boro-Bolton would be a very close game, and we are playing some lovely football (with mild problems putting the ball in the back of the net due to being without a recognised regular goalscorer). Our UEFA Cup run was fantastic beyond belief and yet because we (and other clubs like Villa and Portsmouth) aren't a member of the Big Four, we get pulled down so often. Why everyone wants to watch Liverpool play I do not know - horrendous football despite the talent available to them.
