But they are two different types of players...Hargreaves is a holding midfielder and Cole pushes forward. Depending on the desired formation either one may be appropriate.

Gerrard should always play in the middle; this season his biggest weakness (to me) is that he tries to be everywhere at once for Liverpool, and ends up out of position.

On the day that the Premier league show no end to their greed League One club Bournemouth have gone into administration and been docked 10 points.

What a cruel game football is :(

Even crazier than playing games outside England are the occasional calls I hear for a Premier League team based outside the UK, particularly in the US since our own league is so small. I suppose it's not impossible, but FIFA would try hard to sink it and I would expect resistance from most English football supporters. Not to mention the fact that US Soccer would see it as a fundamental threat to Major League Soccer and try to kill it.

I admit I'd like to see a "real" Premier League match in the states but I don't think it's a good idea to expand the current schedule. Much like the same debate in Formula One, it is too much of a financial and physical strain for the teams who already have pretty full schedules.

Reading op-ed pieces on England's performance I'm surprised how negative the reaction has been. England didn't play particularly well, to be sure, but it was just one game and Capello has only held a couple training sessions...sheesh. Too many people are complaining about Beckham being excluded and Owen riding the bench.

Also, what if say Chelsea beat Arsenal to the title by 1 point because Arsenal had to play Man U in the 39th (extra) game and only drew, whereas Chelsea played Bolton and won. So, that over the standard 38 games Arsenal had 1 more point than Chelsea but lost the title because of the extra game.

They were talking about seeding the top teams (6, IIRC) so they wouldn't face each other. But your point stands. If it were ManUre vs. Derby and Arsenal vs. ManSh*tty, that doesn't seem right.

I'm surprised the number of clubs they are saying have, have agreed to it. Especially after all the moaning they do about the Christmas fixtures.
My thoughts exactly – the same clubs who bleat on about their molly-coddled players getting tired from playing too many games will happily agree to them playing an extra match or two to rake in even more cash.

You know, it's similar to what they've done in Rugby League for the past season or two – they have a 'Millennium Magic' weekend where an extra round of matches (usually big derbies) are played in Cardiff. See, that's the level the Premier League has sunk to – they're copying Rugby League.

Bloody hell.

I thought the owner said that they'd be fine until the end of the season at least, time enough for buyers to come in?
:( I was there only the other day.

Meanwhile, the Premier League is going to allow teams to name seven subs on the bench from the start of next season.

The extra subs will no doubt come in useful in combating the jet lag when the Manchester derby is played in Tokyo or Portsmouth and Fulham battle it out in Sydney...

By the way, sad news indeed to hear about Bournemouth. I note in the BBC's report on the situation on the south coast that the company appointed as the clubs administrators is the same one appointed when my old employers went into liquidation last autumn. Given that it took me a lot of phone calls and over three months to get my P45 out of the buggers I feel especially sympathetic for the club. :(

Yeah so from what I've gathered today, mostly the English are not happy with this as its greedy and maybe a bit unBritish? Fair enough.

Followers of EPL well, I guess some follow the English train of thought and others will be thinking, awesome here's a chance to see Premier League teams without going to England. And at first I thought along a similar line. Liverpool in Sydney!!! Just a few hours flight across the ditch.

Then the second thought, I wouldn't particularly want to see Liverpool play in Sydney or wherever else around the world, part of the reason is the wonderful atmosphere that the English fans provide.

Thierry Henry would be extremely expensive and he's past his sell-by date...Keegan would be heading for disaster unless Henry's form changed dramatically for the better.

Keegan seems to be doing some serious catnip:

I heard the Keegan radio phone-in last night and the comments he made about Henry are being blown totally out of proportion, surprise, surprise.

But Keegan did say that they intend to surprise a few people in transfer market.

Overseas games – what about all those true fans that never miss games home or away, are they expected to go to China now?

Fixed that for you. :p;)

Not really. :p He is past his inspirational best. It is no secret that he loved Arsenal, and only a couple of weeks ago I was reading about his desire to come back and work at Arsenal, and how much he loves the club. He is a very intelligent, rich man, and I can't see a reason he would ever move to Newcastle.

Robert Pires also said recently he'd like to come back and play for Arsenal until he retires, but that he's realistic, and knows it won't happen. He also said he'd like to come back and work at Arsenal later, perhaps - as has Bergkamp. Bobby Pires.. amazing player.

Henry is past his prime, but I think another, more important factor is that he's won everything, so he might not have the hunger he had during his best years...

Newcastle don't need overpriced stars in their declining years - they need young players with great potential just coming up from the academies who will grow with the club.

Fergie seems to really have his nose out of joint on the proposal of BPL games abroad.

I think playing an extra game abroad is a crazy idea and the fact the matches will be drawn of the hat makes it totally unfair. But then again what do I care, the way Birmingham are playing we won't be in the Premier League.

I think the 7 subs thing is good, brings us in line with the rest of Europe. Is it just the Premier League, or the Football League as well?
I think at this stage just the Premer League, but I'm sure the Football League will folow suit in a season or two's time. Mind, do I remember rightly that you used to be able to name seven subs in the LDV Vans Trophy a few years back?

Yeah so from what I've gathered today, mostly the English are not happy with this as its greedy...
That's about the size of it.

...awesome here's a chance to see Premier League teams without going to England.
Awesome if Manchester United or Arsenal are drawn to play in your home city, slightly less awesome if it's Bolton vs Reading you're being treated to.

Overseas games – what about all those true fans that never miss games home or away, are they expected to go to China now?
It'd be a hell of a ground-tick, that's for sure. ;)

Have any foreign Football Associations made any comment on these plans yet? I can imagine that they wouldn't be too happy on the Premier League pitching tent in their nation, leeching off supporters, sponsors and media attention from their domestic leagues...
