The rules were unclear last year which is precisely why they were made crystal clear this year.

To clarify: The rules were perfectly clear last year. England had four Champions League places, and it was up to the FA to decide on their allocation in the event that Liverpool won the European Cup and finished outside of the top four. When that scenario became a reality, the FA awarded the fourth berth to Everton. Liverpool made representations to UEFA, and the rules were ultimately changed as a result.

I was under the impression that the rule last year conflicted with another rule that said only 4 teams from any one country could enter the CL and this had to be changed in order to allow Everton to play. Or something like that.

No, the rules had to be changed to allow Liverpool to play.

What a fracking Jodrel, Jol is. How can he complain about not being in the CL if Arsenal win. The rules were unclear last year which is precisely why they were made crystal clear this year. After Bolton were denied a pretty definite penalty he just smirked and said "that's football".

I think you're being unfair to Martin Jol: the guy's remarkably consistent with this stuff. There have been a number of occasions where Spurs have been on the wrong end of bad refereeing decisions - not least at Old Trafford last year - but Jol's attitude has always been that these things even themselves out over the course of a season.

It was a clear-cut penalty yesterday, but it wasn't a massive issue - these things happen every week in football. Sam Allardyce was right to call the referee on a poor decision, but I think he also recognises that it's just a part of the game, which is why he didn't start throwing his toys out of the pram like Wenger did last week.

I agree with you and Jol on the point of ref decisions. Faeces occurs. As in the last Ashes test. I was referring to Jol complaining about the very clear cut and unequivocal CL rule, only because it suddenly affects him.

Plus Spurs might knock Arsenal out of entry to the CL so therefore I hate him and his grandmother.:)

Liverpool were effectively not from a country. Thats how they managed to get Chelsea (another English team) in the group stages.

Oh come on! It's a long old season and there's 10 million quid at stake! I think any club in Spurs' situation would be making the same noises.

Fair enough if it was last year when there was some uncertainty. But when the rules are absolutely crystal clear and recently made watertight for precisely this reason, it is whingeing of the most blatently ridiculous kind. Plus Jol's mother is ugly as frack. I mean it is similar to if a crucial goal hits the woodwork and he says it's not fair because the goalposts should actually be 2 cm further apart.

FACT: Martin Jol wears womens underwear.

We've already been through this. There was no uncertainty last year - the rules were as clear as they are this year.

Thank you for yet another insightful contribution to this thread.

Got the result.. dirty tackle at the end has broken Diaby's ankle. :(

Where did you watch that online?

PM me if you want me to explain more - it required me to be in.. *gasp* Windows..

"I spoke to Wayne on Saturday evening and he was obviously a bit down, but I told him these things happen." Fergusson

Because Rooney would not have known that.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson still hopes to pick Rooney in the hope he will be fit to play in the later stages of the tournament.

But if Rooney isn't there at the early stages then England won't be there at the later stages. Give it up Sven.

Sure they will. Maybe England will miss their top striker, but they are a team which are so hard to beat. So much quality everywhere on the pitch.. especially the midfield.

Maybe it could work in England's favour.... What if England make it through the group stages, and have a fresh, well rested and fit Rooney for the latter part of the tournament.

The only problem is, after being out of action for six-plus weeks he's going to be lacking match fitness and a fair bit of sharpness. As mentioned previously, Beckham managed to just make it into the last World Cup after his metatarsal injury and he didn't look anywhere near full fitness...

You're right about that.

The ideal situation is that a key player would have an injury for a couple of weeks, and be recovered at the start of the last month of the normal season.
So, had lots of rest, but had a couple of competitive games to get back into match fitness.

Let me tell you that a couple of Dutch key players have had this kind of "fortune"... ;)

It's going to be an interesting World Cup, that's for sure.
Not in the least because it's held in Germany....

I'd say the more ideal situation was that your key player wasn't injured in the first place... ;)

You're right, though – if he'd have picked up his injury, say, a month ago then he would most likely have been ready to play again in time for England's pre-World Cup friendlies, so he could at least have had a chance to get a couple games under his belt.

One thing's for certain – there are going to be a lot of international managers (and fans) watching on nervously during the last couple of games of the season. On that note, Chelsea have stated that John Terry will sit out Chelsea's remaining games to ensure his fitness for the summer. :)

Maybe if a few more top players from other sides pick up injuries we can have a special world cup for them. Sort of like the paralympics.

Chelsea is really the only team who can afford to rest all the key players. I must admit I admire Chelsea's decision. OK, they are an English based team, but neither Mourinho nor Abramovic have interest in the England team, have they? ;)
So good on them for giving Terry his rest. But what about Lampard?

EDIT: just read the link.... haha.
Who's pulling whose leg?

Is that a reference to the Jodrell family on Monty Python's Flying Circus? "The Jodrell family of Durham" were winners of the "Most Awful Family in Britain" contest, and were so truly awful that none of their performance could be shown on television.

No, however I suspect that the Jodrell family was also a reference to Jodrell Bank observatory.
