Congrats to Man Utd and all their fans. Very happy it wasn't Chelsea again this season and hopefully Arsenal can mount a serious challenge next season.

2 down, 1 to go

At the other end of the table there is one relegation spot still undecided, with 3 teams still mathematically able to fill it: Wigan, West Ham, Sheffield United.

I worked out all the scenarios

West Ham,
Will survive if:
Either (i) They win or draw against Man U, or (ii) Wigan fail to beat Sheffield United, or (iii) They lose by Sheffield United lose to Wigan by a margin that is at least 3 goals bigger than West Ham's defeat.

Will be relegated if: They lose to Man United and Sheffield United loses to Wigan by a margin that is less than 3 goals bigger than West Ham's defeat.

Sheffield United,
Will Survive if:
Either (i) They win or draw against Wigan, or (ii) They lose to Wigan but West Ham loses to Man U and the margin of Sheff U's defeat is less than 3 goals worse than West Ham's defeat

Will be relegated if: (i) They lose to Wigan and West Ham win or draw, (ii) they lose to Wigan and West Ham lose to Man U but the margin of Sheff U's defeat is more than 3 goals bigger than the margin of West Ham's defeat.

Wigan,
Will Survive if: The beat Sheffield United
Will be relegated if: The fail to beat Sheffield United.

I'm hoping West Ham go down, if only because it means we'll face them next season and I've never seen them play in the flesh before.

I'm well selfish, me. :p
Last time I saw them play live was when Iain Dowie did that storming header into his own goal, knocking them out of the Cup :)

*tut* Not gonna happen. :p

Where is Hull's released list anyway? I can't wait to see Michael Bridges' name on that. Ha.

Phil Brown said he would be talking to the players today and tomorrow to find out who doesn't want to stay. I thought that was his job to tell them who he doesn't want to stay!

I don't think Bridges will be released, he has 2 years left on his contract and that would cost a lot to pay-off.

I hope that Phil Brown goes and joins Big Sam at Newcastle. I think Hull (or any club in the Championship) should look at Mike Newell. It wasn't his fault what happened at Luton and I still think he is one of the best managers in the country at the moment.

We'll see then, transfer list him. We'll have him back.

Mike Newell is a legend. I also don't believe he totally to blame for Luton's demise. Although, the blame has to fall somewhere.

*Mike Newell's sexist army!!*

As for Phil Brown to Newcastle, there have been rumors of our Macca going to join him, I hope not, because he's done a great job in his first year as manager here. There are always loads of names floating about tho.

That's exactly what I thought when I read that comment. One issue I do have with Brown is that he does seem to be a bit too friendly with the players, it does seem to be an issue sometimes when coaching staff get promoted to manager – some of the players seem to be a bit over familiar.

And no, Markleshark – no sign of that released list yet, I suspect we'll find out who we're letting go tomorrow. Mind, Brown will need to be officially named as manager before he's allowed to ditch any players, naturally. Will Bridges be among them? I think it was pretty telling that at a point where we couldn't buy a goal Bridges – a proven goalscorer – couldn't even force his way onto the bench. Maybe he won't be free-transferred due to his contract, but I imagine he'll be available should any offers come in for him.

Looking at our squad list, I reckon we'll be at least seven players lighter over the next few days, not including those on loan or short-term deals. It'll be interesting to see if Mr Brown agrees with the players I think will to be shown the door...

Well, the eagerly anticipated Hull City 'released' list was, erm, released today... and it was a bit of a let down too. We released just four players today... a couple of teenagers plus a couple of young 'through the ranks' players who had only made a handfull of appearances between them. No big names (by our standards at least) were given the chop. Bridges as of the time of writing is still a Tiger. ;)

I expected more to be gone – however, it seems likely that at least two more will be sold to other clubs and I would imagine that a few fringe players will be available should other clubs want them, rather than terminating their contracts now and having to pay them compensation.

I've also not seen any official confirmation that Brown has signed a new deal to stay on as manager – all the indications seemed to be that that would be sorted earlier on this week.

Phil Brown will be hanging-on until he knows what is happening with Big Sam. He would be up the A1, via the M62, (or maybe the country road via Pocklington, A1079?) like a shot.

Tell you what – Big Sam can be our new manager and Brown can stay here as his number two. Everyone's happy then – Big Sam has proven experience of getting the best out of not-that-good players and we've got loads of them so it's an enviable challenge for him, and from Brown's point of view he's reunited with his bessie mate and as a bonus he doesn't have to move house. :)

Anyway, if Brown did go to Newcastle I expect he'd fly up there – he seems like he'd be a bit flash like that. ;)

Never been a fan of Big Sam, can't keep his cool, chews gum worse than Sir Alex does, and what is with the big microphone? We're not playing American Football y'know.

I must admit I do like the style of Big Sam. Maybe its a northern thing, but he is no-nonsence and gets the job done. Could you see Christiano Ronaldo do those step-overs in one of his teams?

As for the ear piece, didn't it go wrong one game and he got put through to a local pizza take-away?

I think they're used quite a bit in Rugby League as well, although I can't confirm that for certain as I try not to get involved with all that stuff.

Big Sam is famous though for embracing new, forward thinking approaches to sport – any technology or techniques that could help improve the performance of his side would be considered I'm sure, and he clearly feels that the headpiece allows him to communicate with his staff in a more efficient way, helping to get the all important results they need out on the pitch.

Either that or he likes pretending he's Madonna. :D

His breasts aren't quite upto the job, but I am sure his voice is on the same level as hers!

Well, after this afternoon's results the Blades are down and West Ham managed to hang on in there. As I mentioned previously I'd have preferred the chirpy cockneys to get relegated, but on the bright side at least we have another Yorkshire derby to look forward to next season.

So now I've followed soccer in Europe for a full season. Some observations:

- I don't regret picking Spurs, since they did almost as well as last season. Considering the strength of the Big Four, that's not too bad. If someone doesn't buy up Berbatov, then I'll feel even better about it.

- There really is a big step up between the EPL and, say, Serie A. Not so much by the top teams, but even the weaker EPL teams are far stronger than the weaker teams in most other leagues. In the English league the players also try to, you know, score goals.

- It takes a while to figure out who the fans absolutely adore (e.g., Gerrard) and who they admire grudgingly (Christiano Ronaldo). I think Shevchenko has gotten a bit too much criticism and Lampard not enough.

- If I hear someone say "Theater of Dreams" again, I will be sick.

- The drama surrounding Mourinho is a bit crazier than the controversial coaches in North American sports (Bobby Knight, Bill Parcells, etc.), but none of the guys over here declared themselves to be "special" either.

- There's an absolutely crazy obsession with who's on the English national team, who should be, who shouldn't be, who's being considered, etc. I wish the commentators talked about it less during games.

Overall I've been pretty pleased. It's actually replaced the NHL as a sport I follow closely. Now if only Spurs can find some defenders. A single digit goal difference is not good enough.

I'm glad that you've enjoyed your first season, aloofman. As the first person to recommend Spurs to you in that thread you started all those months ago, I'll take full credit for all the fun that you've had. :p ;)

Off on a tangent – and harking back to a earlier discussion about the new style Premier League shirt typeface – I was interested to see a number of clubs played yesterday wearing their 2007-2008 kits complete with the new look lettering on the back. Your boys were one of the clubs to do so – as were Sheffield United, who won't actually get to wear those numbers next season baring some unlikely legal tomfoolery going on. Ho ho. :D

That's really pretty funny. :D

End of a really pretty **** season. Well - it ended in early March actually.
