Wow, that's awesome! I was wondering why my MBPr went from China straight to Memphis. I had no idea that commercial planes could do that. Thanks for the info!

It is! FedEx originally didn't want any long range freighters and originally committed to buying the A380. Though it could carry more cargo, it would still need to refuel in Anchorage when coming from Asia. After multiple delays from Airbus and the freighter being out of spec of what both FedEx and UPS wanted, FedEx cancelled their orders and ordered the 777F from Boeing in a retaliation move. Finding that the 777F was extremely useful in Asia-US since it had the range to bypass Anchorage and fly direct to Memphis, FedEx was able to cut 1 day off of delivery times giving them an extra advantage over UPS on Asia-US shipping as well as the ability to charge a premium for those services. Not only that but the 777F is 30% more fuel efficient than the MD-11F it replaces. FedEx has been so happy with these they doubled their orders from 15 777F freighters to 32 freighters as well as options for 13 more. Options basically mean that the airframe manufacturer has agreed to let FedEx buy 13 more airplanes if they choose at a set price and time definite delivery date. This way if FedEx really wants even more all they have to do is whip out their credit cards instead of going in negotiations which can take up to a year. The 777F are quite expensive to purchase, so FedEx only utilizes them on international routes where their profit margin is highest and the equipment is necessary. In domestic airfreight, FedEx uses a combination of MD-11F, DC-10F, A300F, and 757F slowly replacing the 727F. UPS on the other hand chooses to use the larger 747F from Asia Pacific and has refuel stops in Anchorage just as Fedex. Their domestic fleet is compromised of newer 767F/ A300F which have since replaced the whole DC-8 inefficient fleet. FedEx continues to milk their ageing MD-11f/DC-10 fleet, though they will eventually be replaced by the the 767F in the coming years as FedEx has recently placed a huge order 61 767F to replace the entire domestic fleet by the end of the decade with deliveries starting in 2014.

Anaways I hope you learned something! Not only am I an apple freak, but I'm an plane freak as well as a logistics freak. Likewise I was ecstatic when Tim Cook came in as CEO.

Earpods only :(

All - very exciting as usual to track new Apple toys! I love my iPhone 4S (white), but would love to have an iPhone 5. I'm trying to get my work to buy it for me.

I did order Earpods - and they have shipped! Expecting them Sept 19! Not quite the same as you all, but fun nevertheless!

May your iPhones show up early! :)

Listen to this fellow apple fans. I cannot believe it myself. Just plugged in my cell number on track refernce for iPhone! And it appears my iPhone is already in the united states. It was processed and originated in Addison Illinois . Has anyone else found their iPhone 5 on ups originating in the united states?? From what I've read everyone's iPhone is starting in china

Near the O'Hare cargo ramp

My iPhone 5 is in the US already!

My tracking isn't showing anything about china. Only origin in Illinois. Called ups and they said it came from Ingram micro.

Just a heads up... if you need to change the shipping address to your work/other than billing. You need to do it before it goes into "Preparing for shipment". I called and basically told they can't make a change since it's being prepared, so my next call has to come after the status changes to "shipped" which imo is ******** since Apple could make this process much easier by simply allowing me to ship to the same address I have shipped the last 5 or 6 orders from them, my work. Oh well, good luck changing it if you need to.

Considering I placed the order at 2:33am Friday morning, attempted to call twice during the day and was basically cut off/hung up on by the automated system when going thru the prompts to get the address changed. Finally Sat afternoon just asked for customer service vs going thru the voice prompts held for about 20 mins. but did speak to someone, but clearly that was pointless as they are "preparing to ship" my iPhones a full week before delivery. Sounds like the easy way out to me on Apple's part.

Interesting you write that. I live in Los Angeles and the billing address with AT&T in San Francisco so the iPhone was headed there. I ordered at 12.31 AM PST through apple.com and called Apple the next day (Friday) to try to change the shipping address. The Apple rep said the will change the shipping address (to my work) this one time only (maybe, maybe not).

When do ya'll think we're going to receive a real tracking number, since this method isn't working out too well for me.

Just an idea: when I go to ups.com and track by reference, enter my phone number, the tracking info comes up. One of the options is "change delivery". I don't want to click it because I dont want to make a change, but it might be a way for you to redirect your package.

Mine's on the same route as last time, from Nashville to Louisville....where it'll likely sit until Wednesday, then it'll move again to be in Seattle on Friday.

I finally was able to get that reference phone number thing to work on UPS. My iPhone is coming from Addison, IL. Everything is on time and it says its set to be delivered on the 21st but like everyone else my fingers are crossed for an earlier delivery date. :D

Mine still says "Preparing for shipment" even though I know it has shipped because I looked it up on Ups.com "Track by reference". :D

If ups track reference isn't working then most likely your package hasnt been accepted by ups yet. Why do y'all think some of our iPhones are originating in Illinois? Figured all iPhones would come from manufacturer in china.
