Cyberpunk PS5 patch will be released in 2021, so not a real launch title since it's PS4. Not confirmed but would be really ridiculous if you couldn't transfer...

Ah that sucks. Gives me more time to finish Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima I guess. Those are probably my last 2 PS4 titles.

I hope the saves are compatible but I would be surprised if they were to be honest. Most games re-released on new consoles are not compatible with old saves.

And there lies the difference. Multiple stores. When Sony lets other retailers sell games digitally, I'll jump ship, but I'm not limiting myself to one store and their prices. I want to enjoy different sales and actions from multiple stores. The price-difference for the disc version will make able to buy games cheaper, so I see it as an investment.

exactly like if Best Buy has Ff7 for 30 and Sony for $60 that’s why I don’t like digital.

It also shouldn’t be the same price. Basically they need to give Best Buy or any other retailer 20-25 of the games price. If they keep that why not make games $50

or digital upgrades. I buy fifa every year why not $15 off the next year version when you own current year digitally.Pro evo soccer is doing this

I just can’t justify $70 for a new game if it sucks

The developers and platform holders would veto any move to make that happen so fast it would make our heads spin. The developers and platform holders want more money, not less.

Did anyone manage to pre-order a Digital Edition @ $399?

I was able to get the standard version via Walmart, but I honestly have no use for the disc drive. I'm planning on moving to all-digital for convenience.

What a crazy preorder "process" this was. Feel really lucky I snagged a preorder.

I got one pre-order at the local gamestore and one at bol.com (our "Amazon") where they sold out in 20ish minutes. The gamestore said they'd call once they knew the final price and date. Still waiting on them to call me... So feels like I did a good thing ordering it online.

Bold move knowing you'll need to expand your storage rather sooner than later at an unknown yet hefty price. Those fast SSD's won't come cheap. And knowing you'll be stuck to the premium prices of the PSN Store. No Walmart, Amazon, whatever, ... discounts.

Admittedly, I skipped the PS4 and have been in Xbox land for the past ~3 years. The storage thing never bothered me, because with digital games I can just delete re-download them if/when I want to play them again. I'm fortunate to have fast fiber internet.

For Playstation, is there really a disparity in pricing of newish releases between physical and digital? I buy digital content for Xbox all the time, and I never pay MSRP. There are plenty of sales, or discounted Xbox gift cards at 10%-20% off.

Has Sony confirmed that Remote Play (on Mac) will still be available for PS5 like it is on PS4?

There are loads of sales, but the prices of physical copies go down faster where the digital ones keep their starting price way longer. Also, as I stated, it's only the PSN Sales where otherwise you could benefit from sales at Amazon, Wallmart, Gamestop, etc, etc... And if you delete games to redownload them: putting in the bluray is faster, even on fast fiber internet, not?

So it sounds like they’re two components: price and convenience

Price - I always see PS Store gift cards at 10% off, so effective 10% discount. Are the physical titles typically discounted by 10% within a year of release? Let’s not go into resale value... the few times I’ve made attempts to sell the physical discs, the <$5 recouped cost was not even worth my time/effort. For the pennies I get back on the dollar, I’d rather just keep it.

Convenience - absolutely, popping in the disc is faster than a re-download. But my redownloads seem few and far between. Possibly most critical: I have two pre-teen kids, and two rooms to play games in. I started with discs, and it became a never-ending battle of “where is the LEGO Worlds disc? Who took Minecraft?” Totally annoying for everyone. With digital, it’s simply browse and select. No getting off the couch. No discs with fingerprints. No open game boxes under the couch, behind the TV, etc.

I’m just trying to to understand if the PlayStation “digital” world is different than Xbox. Because my family seems to have done fine with digital-only Xbox for a long time. I don’t think I’ve bought a physical disc in 2+ years.

Absolutely they are and more than that. Glancing at my orders I paid $27 for Assassin's Creed Odyssey in Jan 2019 and it came out in Oct 2018. I paid $40 for Read Dead Redemption 2 in Feb 2019 and it was released Oct 2018.

And those never go/went on sale via PlayStation Store or CDkeys.com for similar prices? Honest question, not being argumentative, I really have never bought a PlayStation game digitally, and the last PS disc I bought was 10 years ago.

They do absolutely run deals on the PS online store but in general I find much better deals with physical media. I've never bought keys from third party sites.

They do, but the sales are rare and usually aren't for the same amount. It's virtually a guarantee that within three months of a game being released you will be able to pick up the disc version of it for a significant discount, new or used.

Sorry if this has been answered - if I get digital only edition PS5 - can I get cheap game codes online from third party sellers, as you do with PC game codes - after the game gets older?

I want one, eventually, but I really hope the thing is in fact 99% compatible with PS4 games and performs like a Pro BC wise, then I'll toss my Pro and get one on the sooner side than later.

Otherwise may have to hold off. Not ready to make a $500 + $70 a game investment (even though I wait for sales on that, may not be sales as often with next gen as soon as has been with PS4 and the likes) on just a few games. As always, will get better as the system has been out for a bit and adoption rate increases.

I also dont mind the white and black controller, but I really like how Sony stayed with black for its consoles (notwithstanding limited editions).

Ideally it would combine my Pro + xbox 1 s which I just use for regular and 4k blu rays, and then the next gen of course.

So glad the PSN membership carries over just fine as I have like a year and a half left, and may even add another year since its been floating ~$30 through 2nd hand markets for a while now.

No launch games I really 'have' to have. the new Black Ops looks sweet, and generally a fan of those more than the regular series but the new MW has been nice. And not a reason to get a new system.

Demon's Souls looks great, but partly because I love Souls games. Does it really do anything that a PS4 is not capable of?
I have to agree with you there. A lot of it seems to be 'form over function' to an extent... a lot of modern games have in-game objects highlighted so you can actually find them within the overly-detailed foliage, whereas on older systems the objects tended to 'naturally' stand out more.

That didn't stop me from preordering though, although who knows whether I'll actually get it on the 12th...

I'm still doubtful. I don't see an announcement coming this soon, especially at the E3 conference. I know the Scorpio will be demoing/debuting, but I don't think Sony is going to fall on their timeline because of this. Especially considering the PS4 Pro just launched in November 2016.

I'm still thinking late 2018/early 2019. But We will find out shortly.

Lovely to read these old predictions.

Like @MisterSavage already said, physical copies go on discount way faster and more than 10%. Normal stores have to compete with each other, the PSN Store doesn't have to do that since it's the only online store where you can get your games digitally. And selling games means to friends or via a website (Craig's list or what's it called in the US). Stores buy the game from you with resale in mind, people buy the game to play it. I don't bother since I love a big collection of games and don't really need the cash. I do love the fact I can borrow games from friends to try them out before deciding to buy them or not.

When my daughter doesn't put back a disc in the box and the box where it belongs; she can't play games on any system for a week (incl iPad, etc). Happened once, discovered I wasn't bluffing, and never happened again. Don't get me wrong, I don't judge, everybody has to run their house however they want to, but the things you describe, no way in hell they'd get away with stuff like that.

And the nice thing about a disc version is: you still can buy digitally ofcourse. You just have all the options. Maybe for games your kids don't play or aren't even allowed to touch due being adults only.

And those never go/went on sale via PlayStation Store or CDkeys.com for similar prices? Honest question, not being argumentative, I really have never bought a PlayStation game digitally, and the last PS disc I bought was 10 years ago.

The PlayStation Store does sales, but you'll need to be patient for AAA games to get their first decent discount. Either you want to play games close to their release and pay a premium price or you don't mind waiting a year or longer and then you can pick them up with a nice discount.

Nope, only on the PSN Store, which is why I won't buy a digital only version.

-------------

I'll use an example. The Last of Us Part 2, a big title that got released in june.

Current price on PSN Store: $59.99
Lowest price ever on PSN Store $49.99 (summer sale)

Current price on Amazon: $48.99
Lowest price on Amazon: $39.99

Didn't bother to check other stores but I think the point is clear that a physical gets better discounts and faster. So if I'd buy today I'd save $11 and $10 when comparing the biggest discounts. So 9 more games like this in the coming years and the physical edition already returned the extra $100.

BUT: in the end, whatever you buy is cool, just trying to explain why I don't see why you'd want to limit yourself to the PSN online store to save $100 on a console that is going to last for years to come.

I'll get the disc version. I prefer to buy digital, and will do so with most games. But something like Spiderman, I know I will play it for awhile, and then never go back to it. That kind of game I will like to sell after a while.

So did anyone manage to get a preorder down?

No chance here, sold out everywhere...

I initially wasn’t going to preorder....but I did. The problem I’m seeing right now, is GameStops in my area are officially closed, so I’m curious to see what other stores can actually offer in-store preorders Besides Best Buy and Target. Because come launch day, that’s the only main competition in my area with preorder choices, which is very limited.

I see older PS4 titles available via codes from resellers like CDkeys. I have used places like these to purchase digital Xbox games, never had an issue.

So can you explain more why I can't buy PS5 game codes from 3rd party sellers?

BTW, I'm leaning towards keeping my disc version pre-order. It's not that I'm opposed to discs in any way, I was just trying to save $100, since I have long sold off my PS disc titles. And those were only PS2/PS3, so they won't work in a PS5, anyways.

You'll be able to, of course. However those sales are rarer than physical disc sales. I'd argue that if you buy games often enough you could more than make that $100 back over the life of the system on game sales.

Sony does not support digital sales from other vendors officially. Where it is possible to find them, it's always a little shady. The second Sony starts supporting digital sales from amazon, etc: I'm making the jump to all digital. Until then: keeping the disc tray so I can pick up games where I want (ergo: where they're giving nice discounts)
