Is it best to assume that most of the PS4 -> PS5 updates will be paid? Nearly every game that I have on my XSX that has been updated to next gen was a free update. In fact, I think the only paid update to date on the XSX was Control - but only if you didn't own a specific version of the game.

I just picked up a PS5 for games like Horizon, TLoU, Days Gone, etc, and I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out what Sony's strategy is here when it comes to updates. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I'd like to pick up Ghosts of Tsushima when it goes on sale during Days of Play - but not if I'm going to have to buy the game all over again if they were to release a PS5 version.

Control was the same on PS5 - some versions got the free upgrade, some did not.

Everything else has been a free upgrade from what I've seen, and the trend for new games seems to support that. AC Valhalla is both platforms, Marvel Avengers is both platforms, Subnautica 2 is both platforms.

I can't think of any aside from Control that have had this issue.

TLoU2 just had a PS5 update IIRC.
Days Gone is actually free with PS5 (as part of the Plus package).

I am expecting titles to be cross generational and for $0.

So far, I think only Control Ultimate Edition is a paid upgrade from last gen. But that game is a paid upgrade no matter where you play it. Even on PC and even if you bought the season pass. Most games with simple upgrades (resolution and frame rate only) are going to be free. Unfortunately, PS5 upgrades have not happened very quickly. From what I understand, upgrading from PS4 isn't just a matter of patching the game. It has to be an entirely new build of the game. This is because the API for PS games is extremely low level and close to the hardware. Xbox games using DirectX have more abstraction between the game code and the hardware so it is easier to patch.

That's how it was initially and I was very irritated about it because I had purchased the regular game. They did end up giving the upgraded version to us via PS+.
Did you like Control? Didn't put it in my backlog because I didn't like the trailers I saw back in the days, but hearing good reactions on the game here and there, so maybe I should try it out (whenever I have some time for it)

Only played it for 20 minutes to see what all the fuss was about. :D Got distracted by another game and ended up playing that instead. (story of my life)

But how were those 20 minutes? Good enough to put the game on your backlog, or enough the see what the fuss was about but without the intention pick up where you left off?

The camera was a little wonky for me and that's why it wasn't hard for something else to grab me. BUT I didn't get to the part where things go crazy. I definitely need to revisit it but right now I'm all about FF7.

Control never really grabbed me either. I think I played the same exact 20 minutes you did. Start playing, some crazy stuff happened, got through it........and I turned it off. Not that it was bad. I just didn't feel any urge to jump back in.

I'm currently playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition. I forgot how much I loved these games back in the 360/PS3 days. Already got plats for Mass Effect 1 & 2. On to Mass Effect 3. Playing on Insanity difficulty as a trophy challenge. There is a trophy for playing all three games on Insanity difficulty without changing. This has actually made the game more fun than I remember since it really forces you to think about how to play the game and using powers and such.

After I'm done there then I'm heading over to FF7. I was waiting for either the PS5 or PC version, which ever came first (since it is supposedly a timed exclusive to PS).

A few games I've recently played and enjoyed on PS5.
  • Resident Evil Village (completed it in Village of Shadows Mode) Awesome game!
  • Visage (creepy and fun)
  • Oddworld Soulstorm (very interesting and fun game)
  • Sackboy a Big Adventure
I also play Cold War Zombies and Warzone every so often. I pre-ordered Battlefield 2042 and Kena Bridge of Spirits so I am looking forward to them..

Oh, Visage is out? I followed their progresss on Kickstarter for a while. Looked like they wanted to capture the P.T. vibe. Is it a good game?

I played it religiously for like a month upon release, got to biome 5 (that will all make sense upon playing it) and then just haven’t really touched it again since as it does require a lot of time and focus.

I hope they patch in a more lenient save system

sounds like its in the works

but at the price I got I couldn’t resist

$70, nah

So I’m not showing a physical disc for this game. Is it available for digital download only on steam? Or how did you end up playing the game through download? (I.E.-Xbox, PC..ect.) According to wikepedia, it is available to consoles as well?

PS5 digital download..

Strange, they only list it for the PS4, and I don’t see the que option for the PS5 in my search engine.

Because it is a PS4 game but it's playable on PS5...

Yup, I see that. But when I search it, it doesn’t even give me the option to download for the PS5. It’s completely ‘grayed out’ and shows ‘PS4 compatible’. I guess, I mean is there something that I’m missing here or not doing. It doesn’t show anything in the que order for the PS5.

You download the PS4 version and then play it on the PS5.. Are you saying you have a PS5 and can't even download the PS4 version? If so, you probably need to contact Sony as something is wrong with your account or console...

I had no problem downloading the PS4 version and playing it on PS5.

From the PlayStation Store link for the game:

To play this game on PS5, your system may need to be updated to the latest system software. Although this game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. See PlayStation.com/bc for more details.

I logged out and logged back in, and that fixed the problem. For a second there, I thought maybe my account had been hacked, but it’s all good. Thank you for your feedback.

Not happy about the treatment for Ghost of Tsushima

$30 for PS5 version + DLC seems steep from PS4 base.

But at least there is an upgrade path. Still think they should offer $10 for standard PS4 to PS5, and $20 for DLC, and maybe like $25 for bundle discount

But it is nice it will be PS5 native at the end of the summer (august 20th)

I plan to beat the game before then

Same here. The PS5-upgrade should be free like with most games. It would motivate more people to buy the DLC I think. Sad thing is that I will pay up, because I absolutely loved that game. Hated getting the platinum trophy, since it meant there was nothing left to do.

Yeah Sony's choices here really make Smart Delivery look like a genius idea. Though you do have to feel somewhat for the developers since they don't get to double dip with it.

Same. It was my game of the year so take my money please.
