They sold an Apple Watch with the exact same internals as a 300 dollar model for 12 grand PLUS! Just because it had a fancy leather strap and a lump of gold as it’s case that was probably worth 1 grand at most! They shipped it in a plastic box.... I think that should tell you enough if Apples pricing and a monitor stand!

And 12k was actually priced beneath what a watch engineered to be that fancy cost at the time. And as Jony Ive predicted, the Apple Watch hit Switzerland very hard. None of the what they did with bands on Apple Watch was easy to do and they nailed it. Even top designers praised them on that.

I have no idea how this stand was engineered and don’t care because it not something I need. But apparently it does come with a stand in the box, so this is a “fancy” one if you want it I guess.

It seems like almost everyone out there looking at this display would be better off just getting the VESA adapter and then a normal stand for a 3rd of the price.

Perhaps, but you’re already spending a BOATLOAD on a computer and monitor that you will use for years, what’s another grand? It’s like buying a Mercedes. Your already $65,000 into it, what’s another 1k for heated seats and electric shades. But like I said earlier, it’s not like Apple will ever sell enough of these to roll around in the money Scrooge McDuck style like everyone here seems to think they will. This is a TINY market and honestly if you love their kit you should be happy they continue to make Mac Pros.

If they really wanted to rake in dough for pure “greed” they could really monetize their purchase of Beats by making the sexiest, blingiest over ear headphones the world has ever seen. Apple Watch style. Slap ‘em on the heads of every baller, celebrity, and rapper out there and watch the money roll in.

It didn't even have a fancy leather strap; they sold it with a regular sport band.

If Apple had done this right, the expensive Watch Edition model would have had swappable innards, so you could keep upgrading the electronics while keeping the expensive fancy case. But they didn't, and the whole thing ended up being embarrassingly stupid.

Folks, I’m opening a new metal shop. Let’s produce these stands and sell it for $499. It will only cost us $100 to make it. We will be rich like Apple ;)

$30 for material
$40 for machining
$15 for assembly
+30-50% for profitability

And the rest? Paying Johnny Ive to make a video about how "incredible" the stand is...
Well, you do know that the value of a product is not determined by how much it costs to make it, but by how much one is willing to pay for it, right? The Free market is beautiful and ruthless. Love it ;)

I loved how the audience collectively gasped when it was revealed not only that the stand was sold separately — but that it cost $999.

He went over that slide QUICK. We barely got to see $999 price tag on the stage. The crowd's reaction was hilarious; even the presenter himself paused at the audience's reaction.

But I think what they naysayers are all missing is that it allows one to rotate the monitor into portrait mode. Now show me one other monitor and stand which can do that (aside from the $200 24" Dell monitor I am using right now while typing this).

What Apple meant by "Pro" in this whole keynote was "people who will spend whatever price we put on it no matter how utterly ludicrous that is."

My question is, why is Apple doing this? You'd think they know this would result in bad press for basically no good reason. They're not going to sell many of these displays, so they're likely not going to make much profit selling these stands.

What's their angle here? Are they really this tone deaf?

Because, as I have reiterated over ad nauseum - Tim Cook needs to be fired. They just don’t care anymore, about anything related to brand image. And they are going to hemorrhage marketshare because of it.

$999 for a $75 stand is INSANE.

Like...it literally would never happen under Steve Jobs.

It is insane.

Whoever made the decision to announce a separate and optional $999 stand should be fired... Seriously... how hard would it have been to just announce a monitor price of 5999 including the stand and call it a day... NO ONE WOULD BE BALKING.... stupidity on display there at Apple...

*cough fire Tim Cook cough*

It still isn’t too late, Apple Board of Directors! It’s getting there, but the company can still be saved with some swift changes. Act now.

I don’t get the negative comments. If you don’t need that level of fit, finish, and functionality — don’t buy it. And how does Apple know if a user would want a stand or wall mount? Are they supposed to include both, and just charge more for the whole package? Logistically it makes sense to sell these pieces separately. Outrage over something that maybe you can’t afford or refuse to purchase just reveals your own covetousness and insecurity. There are more and less expensive monitors out there. Just pick one, do your work, and shut up about it.

...and on the other side, we are perfectly within our rights to mock the price.

Don't like? Don't read it. It's really not that complicated.

If this thread proves anything it’s how people don’t get information before freaking out. Apparently it comes with a normal stand included - but you can pay extra to get a special one. But half the people here are talking about how it has no stand or you must get some $999 stand. Apple introduced a new product - a special counterbalanced stand as an upgrade for those who want it.

What an ironic comment, because you are wrong. It comes with nothing. Take your own advice and look at the product page.

What most don’t understand is the monitor is designed to compete with reference monitors that cost upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. People with big budgets will buy the stand with the monitor. More likely, the mount.

That said, they shouldn’t have mentioned the stand price during the presentation, and also not mentioned that the mount wasn’t included in the box. Or just included the mount in the first place. Easy pickings for articles and clicks by news outlets.

LOL it doesn’t matter if this thing came with a $250 stand. Everyone would find something to moan about because that’s the point isn’t it? To be negative and angry. It’s pretty much the only reason message boards exist. And also trolls need a place to get the attention they desperately crave.

Literally NOTHING announced today is worth an argument. If you don’t like it or need it. Don’t buy it. A rational approach. But that’s not enough is it? Gotta get the negativity out.

I would think after the price debacle of the iPhone, Apple would be a bit more grounded on their price strategies moving forward. What an illusion...
Tim and his executives there live in a bubble.
Their greed and gull to add another $2k (stand and Nano tech that is a must on bright environments) just add two the injury.
