I'm pulling an all nighter, not going to sleep until the calendar says 16th June :(

I hope 3 release info too, but i'm still hoping for an o2 preorder upgrade

Im hoping for an early upgrade from 3 myself - 4 months into an 18month plan.

And as for the all nighter good luck! Im giving up at 2am this morning - if there is no news by then it can wait til I wake up.

So many dilemmas, not a bad thing.

On O2 Simplicity (contract on my 3G ended back in January), so now have a choice between:

1. Remaining on O2 Simplicity and buying a sim-free iPhone 4 from Apple - not sure I can realise £180 or so via recycle given my GF has her sights on my current 16GB white model.

2. Switching to Vodafone contract and utilising an upgrade - my main network, have had a business contract with them for 10 years

3. Switch to Orange - a lot of friends and family are with them, I've always had a soft spot for their brand, and I suspect they will have the best tariffs of all.

Decisions, decisions...any suggestions?

p.s. absolutely no question I am going 'white' again, but I do love the look of black glass - not as practical, classic or distinctive though

With that much time left on your contract I would be amazed if they let you upgrade that early, best bet is to see if they offer one on pay as you go.

Orange had mediocre tariffs for the 3GS imo.

And yeah, the white looks incredible.

I'm on O2 simplicity also as my 3g contract ended in January.

My experience with Vodaphone is that they're not very experienced or understanding when it comes to the iPhone and the iPad so they make mistakes and everything is all rather bureaucratic.

O2/3 seem to just 'get it right' and Orange also (but less so), but like you I'm seriously doubting whether or not staying with O2 is worth it

Ok my obession this phone is starting to spiral out of control! I ended up dreaming about preordering it last night!! I mean honestly............... LOL

I read somewhere that when the 3GS was released last year on payg on o2, they didn't introduce the unlock for £15 until 6 months later.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Everyone should get on to O2/Orange/Apple chat and see what info we can get - if enough people do it SOMEONE might get connected to an agent who'll give away a little more info than they should. Or maybe each agent will offer slightly different info than the last, and by pooling the responses together we can build a bigger/clearer picture?

For us males it might be an idea to pretend we're female and flirt with the male agents, they might be more forthcoming!

Yeah I think thats correct.

I remember unlocking my 3G around Christmas time. Not 3GS mind you but I think they introduced unlocks for both handsets at the same time... I think.

That's what I got last night if no one saw it.

The unlock was not released immediately as o2 had exclusivity but I think o2 lost exclusivity in october 2009 and the unlock was made available shortly after.

As we will be buying the iPhone 4 when no one has exclusivity, unlocking should be almost immediate. Unless networks say in their contract when you buy the phone that special conditions about unlocking apply. In my opinion, I think unlocking will be available immediately.

I think they only introduced it later as that was when the other operators started selling th iPhone along side O2.....

Orange possibly released the 3GS at the same time as O2 though... someone may need to confirm this.

O2 also had a 'policy' that you needed to have been a PAYG customer for a certain amount of time before you were eligible to unlock, i think this is true for all uk operators.

I am going to assume that the iPhone 4 will be O2 locked but the option to unlock will be available to existing O2 PAYG customers.

As far as I remember O2 introduced unlocking at the same time that they lost their exclusive deal with Apple, around November 2009.

I think initially all phones will be locked for the first few months and then hopefully after they will allow unlocking once all the hype has died down.

I think if you buy on PAYG then the networks have no right to insist on it being locked. The phone is not subsidised and they are not offering any incentive this time around so far. I am still hoping that Apple sell a sim free version so I can buy and take away and choose myself. I want to be able to use a few different networks and not tied to one.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I want to get it with T-Mobile payg but the rumors are that they are not gonna be doing a payg version. (the most expensive payg phone they offer on their website is a Blackberry for £150)

The plan is to get it with o2 payg then ask for the unlock then switch to T-mobile.

If o2 don't unlock at launch then i'm in a bit of a pickle. My ideal solution would be for Apple to sell the iPhone 4 unlocked but doubt that's gonna happen :(

I wonder who is running the show. Apple or the network companies.

i asked a question earlier in the thread, im hoping somebody might have an answer.

have we established if Apple's pre-orders tomorrow will be for PAYG handsets only, or will they be offering handsets with carrier contracts?

as O2 have stated they will not be doing pre-orders, and it seems strange that Apple would allow contract pre-ordering without O2.
