Thanks for all the quick replies. I want to get it with T-Mobile payg but the rumors are that they are not gonna be doing a payg version. (the most expensive payg phone they offer on their website is a Blackberry for £150)

The plan is to get it with o2 payg then ask for the unlock then switch to T-mobile.

If o2 don't unlock at launch then i'm in a bit of a pickle. My ideal solution would be for Apple to sell the iPhone 4 unlocked but doubt that's gonna happen :(

I'm in a similar situation - in an 18 month contract with 3, and I got a feeling they won't sell it on PAYG :( how awesome would it be if Apple sold it unlocked :)

i asked a question earlier in the thread, im hoping somebody might have an answer.

have we established if Apple's pre-orders tomorrow will be for PAYG handsets only, or will they be offering handsets with carrier contracts?

as O2 have stated they will not be doing pre-orders, and it seems strange that Apple would allow contract pre-ordering without O2.

I have a suspicion it will be pay and go only for pre-orders.

it will be contract and payg

02 aren't doing pre-orders because they don't know how much stock they'll be getting

I think Apple are running the show as they like to have complete control over everything, I am also hoping they won't be locked so I can use any simcard as well but alas the chances are very slim if not none.

Personal opinion is that Apple should sell an unlocked phone full stop. The carriers buy said phone from Apple and sell it subsidised for those wanting a contract and supply sims for those wanting to use their own sim free phone they bought fair and square on PAYG. If the carriers are that scared of you moving to another service there must be a reason. Such as crap service or coverage?

You would think that Apple would put in some clause in the network contracts saying something like 'We retain the right to sell all our iphones unlocked in our shops for customers who want the freedom to use the device as they please'

I don't get it, very unlike Apple. When you buy a Mac they don't force you to sign up to an ISP!!!!!

They don't when you buy an iPad 3G either. They offer to supply a sim for you, but the iPad is still unlocked.

I read somewhere that when the 3GS was released last year on payg on o2, they didn't introduce the unlock for £15 until 6 months later.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?
O2 only provided a free unlock towards the end of the year (Nov or Dec I forget which) ONLY because of the announcement that their exclusivity was ending. Given other networks were about to carry the iPhone, there seemed little point (other than pettiness) not unlocking, contractual obligations aside. The PAYG unlock fee of £15 was merely an extension of this policy, and isn't relevant to the current open environment. In other words, that 6 month delay you speak of was unrelated to the release of the PAYG handset.

I suspect all iPhone 4's bought from network providers will still come with a lock (as per all handsets) except this time you will have the option of legally unlocking it as opposed to jailbreaking. But then it's equally possible networks won't bother with handset locks this time round (or charge an extra fee for unlocking). Those bought at an Apple store though will be unlocked for sure.

Exactly, that was such a straight forward process. Bought the ipad on launch day and was in and out and set up in minutes.

I doubt I'll be getting the iPhone on launch due to all the variables involved. Have to sit back and see what happens. Don't wanna be stuck with a £600 device that i can't use for the first couple of months.

Would have gone with o2 but i live in a basement flat and only get strong Tmobile signal and partial orange signal.

Its one of the reasons i only do 30 day rolling contracts. It would be a nightmare to be stuck in an 18 month contract with on and off signal

I think that apple should do what they did with the iPad 3G's sell the device and provide sims for the network people wish to use - PAYG, you could still buy the device from say an O2 store for contracts (at subsidised prices) but it has a lock on it until the end of your contract, which automatically comes off after the 12/18/24 month term.
Contracts at apple stores could be cheaper/rolling contracts but you have to pay the full price for the device and have the freedom to choose which would be best for your area, budget etc.

Whatever happens today... they'll be releasing the pricing details when the preordering starts, right? Can they do that, offer preordering without the prices?

I was also told on the Apple chat thing that it would be the same price as the 3GS (this was on PAYG).

hope you're right mate.

all the networks have drawbacks for me...

i was leaning towards Orange cos of their 3G coverage but they don't offer iPhone tariffs (currently, on the 3GS) over 18 months with unlimited texting within my price range, which i really need.

Vodafone have poor 3G coverage in my area despite their many positives.

and O2, well i'll probably stick with them as things stand despite their questionable 3G at times as its ok in my area and ive had good experiences with them in the past.

as for 3, i just dont have the patience to deal with their call centres should i ever have a problem.

No not really.

Can you tell me where that has been announced? If you believe that, you're going to be in for a surprise...

I rang O2 for my PAC code and asked if they are doing pre-orders, and was told categorically "no we wont, it will be first come first served on the 24th".

this coupled with the fact that Orange, 3 and Vodafone all have said they will be offering a pre-order service, i just found it slightly odd that the original carrier is seemingly the exception to the rule.

I couldn't get a single bit of information out of the chat on the apple store website, they couldn't even tell me how the phones are going to be delivered, instead just told me to sign up for more information.

Orange have just recently launched new sim only plans with Internet, Unlimited Texts and 500 Minutes for £20. 1 Month contract, these are new to me as I was only looking last week and they were not available.

Just called O2 for my PAC. They didn't even try and talk me out if it! It seems vodafone need your PAC when you sign up or you can't port your number!

I wonder how contract preorders will work? Say Vodafone started preorders tomorrow, I wouldn't be able to sign up with my PAC, it'd cancel my number before I got the new iPhone!

I am now rather glad that I didn't stay up any longer just to see what the O2 site update was going to bring. I would have been extra tired for no extra information.

Right, looks like today is a day of waiting to see who is the first carrier to provide prices. I would like to think that as soon as the first has provided prices the rest will follow suit within a few hours (hopefully undercutting each other).

Did you call standard customer services? Was it free? Did they say how long before you get your code?

I wish I shared your confidence. :)
I don't see why not. Now the handset is available on at least three of the four major UK networks, there's no great need for handset locking. If you're in or sign a contract, then they have you tied in there financially.
