Networks won't change to MicroSIM until phone manufacturers utilise it in their new handsets, as it stands afaik only the iPad and iPhone 4 will be using them. Albeit, that's a large market, it's not enough. Especially since adapters are relatively cheap and you can just cut your current sim down to size.

For those buying the PAYG handsets, it's an easy switch as CS will port everything over from your old SIM. Then just buy an adapter on ebay for 99p so you can use the MicroSIM in any other phone.

My 3G contract ran out in March, so I've been on Simplicity ever since. I really can't wait for the release of the new iPhone and I'll be there on release day. I'll be updating Engadget every couple of minutes on Monday waiting for the announcement.

:apple:

I'm the same, hoping for an unlocked one. I wonder how much an unlocked one would cost compared to the PAYG one that I got. O2 charge £15 to unlock one. I had mine done last week. The penalty is you loose whats left of the years free internet. I suspect a unlocked would be the same price to all intents and purposes. The free internet that O2 threw in is the incentive for you to stop with them and spend money on calls.

why do you want to buy a sim free one? if anything it will be the same or more expensive, surely just buying it on O2 and then paying the £15 unlock is far easier and likely cheeper, it wont matter that you loose the free data as you wouldnt have got it if you bought a sim free handset anyway.
- this also to the guy asking if it was good to to to belgium to buy a sim free phone

also in the small print for the original and 3G iphones was the quote "if you damage or loose your iphone you will be required to purchase new phone at a cost of £700 or £800" (or words to that effect) this was even the case when there was a payandgo phone so you would have had to been mental to pay that, that may give an indication on what a factory unlocked, direct from apple might cost.

I haven't seen a UK microsim yet but in the US the microsim comes like this:

If the UK ones are like this I see no reason why they cant do that by standard and the user can pop out the size of one they need, anyone got an image of the UK microsims and how they are sent? and if they are like the pic above?

You could be right. Though the companies always quote ridiculous purchase cost for the new phone. I cant see it being dearer than it's iPad equivalent.
What was to stop me walking out the shop, paying £15 last year and getting my phone unlocked. One years free internet. That's O2's hook. I don't think they subsidised the PAYG phone at all last year.

Do you guys think the new iPhone will come with the 12 months free 3G and wifi like last time? Or will it be an offer only the 3GS got unless the 3G got it as well when that was released.

no I don't think they subsidised the PAYG phone either but I can see an officially unlocked one being artificially expensive if only to force you to take a direct networked one, but in all honesty if they always make it payandgo and have an option to unlock I'll be happy.

I would be even more happy if I could buy it direct with 3 mobile with free skype and also the little '3' looks the best in the network bar

I put my Pay and go 3GS on Three last week. My O2 free internet for a year, PAYG sim runs out on the 17th so I got in before it runs out. Very easy, number ported over in two days. Three customer services were amazing and fast. I think they have had one hell of a shakeup with the iPad fiasco. So I finally actually have 3G at last! And it's fast.

Guys, quick question. Am I correct in anticipating that the PAYG cost of the new iphone will be £440 in the UK?

On O2 preferably. This was the price last year and the year before I believe.

Just sold my 3GS 32gb for £420 so shouldn't be too bad. Only after the new base model (16gb we think).

I know we can only speculate but I do not think it will be far off this right? There were whispers not so long ago that the new iPhone might be cheaper this time, although very much doubt it!

Yes, we all expect it to be at that price. I hope they will move 3GS to the 350 price point and then 4G to the old 3GS price points.

Cool thanks. No doubt it will be a nightmare finding a PAYG version of the new iPhone again this year in stock.

The number of times I got told stock preference would be given to new contract customers last year was very frustrating. Logical but still frustrating. Makes finding one all the more rewarding I guess lol. Cheers.

Eugh, I will cry if I don't get my hands on one on launch day lol, had my 3G stolen from me 3 weeks ago, and it's been hell without it! Best of luck to both of us finding one! :D

If its £440 I will get one. Selling my netbook and my Solid state drive to stack up on cash for the new iphone. Im a bit skint now that I get an Ipad.

Hmmmm, this writer seems to know a TON of info I wasn't even aware of, such as the dropping of the 3GS sizes, the 5.0 MP Camera and the fact it's going to be out in the last week of the month. The Guardian is a well respected and popular newspaper too, so it's quite interesting.

He knows nothing, he is speculatng. I don't think there will be a drop in 3GS sizes, it would mean that they would need to make changes to its design and would not be able to use unsold stock of 16GB 3GS's

please tell me that was sarcasm lol

No, it's not, but I'm not saying this guy knows secrets that even the top sites haven't caught onto yet. If you read the article, the writer doesn't appear to be speculating that much, but his writing certainly suggests that he knows a lot of facts:

It will replace them with a new 8GB version of the 3GS, which is expected to be aimed at the wider market.

it is expected to be sold by the same mobile phone networks that have the current iPhone: O2, Orange and Vodafone. It is unclear whether Tesco Mobile will have the 4G when it is launched in the last week of this month.

I don't mean to come off as an idiot or nothing, of course I get that the chances of this guy knowing any details are slim, but he just comes off as very competent in his writing, like he knows these facts for certain, and the Guardian is not a paper I would see as posting straight-up incorrect or unconfirmed facts without some sort of knowledge or confirmation on the matter. (Was the camera ever confirmed as 5 MP?)

He is writing as if he knew for sure but he is speculating. Camera is rumored to be 5mp, its a safe bet.

The O2 microsim for my iPad was pretty much the same, so I think you're right that this will eventually become the standard way to supplies sim cards.

I'm expecting the price to get slightly higher, so not everyone expects it to be at the original 3G S price.

Another question about O2 recycle - I'm about to ship my 3G off next week, and was wondering if I should "Erase all content and settings" in the settings menu before I send it off. What did everyone else do?
