I just sold one on eBay brand new for £365

Obviously there will be eBay/Paypal Fees aswell

So when I weight it up with the fees and postage etc.

It's just so much easier for me to either take it CEX and get the cash in hand or just go trade it at CPW and walk away with a new iPhone ready to go.

Granted there are lots of douches on ebay but I recently sold a 2 year old iMac on there for £750 plus P&P with no hassle, fees were £40 I think.
If I can get an extra £100 on ebay then its worth it even with the seller fees.

If the store is close to you and you can fetch that much then yeah.

Does anybody know how much upgrades costed for the 3GS when it was released? I finished my 18 month minimum term 4 months ago (O2), so I'm overdue an upgrade. Considering the 4G, but to be honest, since they're already going to force me to move from my £35 p/m tariff to a £40 p/m tariff, if the upgrade cost is huge I'll probably move to Android.

Any ideas?

Edit: Am I right in thinking I'll just have to pony up whatever a new user will be paying? Makes sense, right enough.

Hi guys,

Currently have a iPhone 3g, contract ran out months ago and now have a monthly contract with o2. My question is how would I go about purchasing the new iPhone? Would I have to change my contract to the new o2 ones?

Those who are in a similar situation what are you doing?

I'm in the same situation, so when you want the new iPhone just pay the upgrade cost of the handset and go into another 18 month contract at £35 pm.

Arghh I'm getting all excited
I'm at work for the keynote so I'm going to go home at 9pm, keep busy till 10 and then hope that the keynote email has come through from MR ;)
On another note, I'll be happy with a 32gb :)
I'm on orange ( using my contract sim with a iPhone 2g) and have access to a friends and family discount code, so I'm hoping that orange include the new iPhone in their f and f discount  It might happen as they offer both 3g and 3gs ( only the 16gb though) on it at the moment!
If not I'll still be ordering regardless on the £35pm 24 month contract ;)
What do people think of orangecare for the iPhone?
Worth it?
Jack

I'm actually so excited about finding out about the new phone tomorrow I may struggle to sleep!! lol

I've got a 3g 8gb, which unfortunatly has some slight cracking on the back casing at the bottom around the dock. There is only one other similar completed auction on ebay and the phone went for £95! I might therefore pop to CEX in town and see what they have to say next week. Otherwise is o2 recycle my next best bet??

Less than 24 hours to go!! Woop Woop!!!

Thought I'd chime in. I picked up a white 16GB 3GS when it launched. Probably not upgrade eligable, but I switched networks to get the iPhone (from Orange to O2).

I"m going to pre-order on a free phone plan with Orange and sell my 3GS to use it to pay off the contract with O2. Can't wait to be rid of them and get to celebrate with a shiny new iPhone 'whatever they decide to call it'.

I'm tempted to go queue for it too on release day. 3GS was delivered but the atmosphere etc look fun. Anyone queue'd and is going to do so again because they enjoyed it?

Carphone Warehouse are a good bet too!

I queued in the morning for a 3G when it launched! Only to be disappointed because my pre-order hadn't arrived!

Then I hot footed it down to Apple that evening and got sorted there. :p

I wouldn't bother with CEX. They offered me £45 for my 8GB 3G because the volume rocker was missing and mine had a slight crack too.

So went to Mazuma mobile and they gave me £160 ;D

Looks fun, and I'll be down in my local shop if it turns out I can't get the friends and family discount, otherwise I have to order it online to get it :(

Sound's fun!!
I'm sort of hoping it is released after the 23rd, as my last exam is then :D

I heard that O2 did not offer pre-ordering last year, and CPW only offered it to new customers. Do you think now that we have O2, Vodafone and Orange all fighting for customers we might see O2 offering pre-orders to upgrade customers?

Also, how long after the 09 WWDC did the 3GS pre-orders start?

Well if I remember rightly the pre-ordering kind of happens in two stages.

Firstly there is the 'register your interest' stage. I remember filling out the form on there website and when they have more concrete details on price, tariffs and dates they email it to you.

Once they know all of the above then you can start pre-ordering it.

That's what I remember from trying to get a 3G with them. They failed.

It really does suck knowing people will have the new Iphone and i have to wait till July 29th :(

I think it all depends when the release date is. Last year with the 3GS it was only 2 weeks after WWDC and they simply didn't do pre-orders direct from O2. Carphone Warehouse were the only ones to offer pre-orders not even the Apple Store let you pre-order.

It remains to be seen what happens this year now its on multiple networks, I would suspect they will all offer pre-orders as they wouldn't want one of the other networks offering it and not them. Unless its an Apple decision not to allow pre-orders in the UK.

OK, the advantage we have here in the UK is O2, Orange, Vodafone, Tesco and probably 3 will have the new iPhone available from Launch date. Will be huge, and this is where the other 3 networks will be throwing incentives for you to come to them for this phone.

When Orange, then Tesco, then Vodafone all got the 3GS, the phone was already out. They knew fine well that there would be no point offering the iPhone for cheaper than O2 since the core majority would of got it from O2 in the first place as soon as it launched.

The only advantage they could of swung in their favour was when the original 3G buyers contracts all ended in January 2010. Even then, those contracts were the dedicated Apple fans. Those Apple fans would of been clued up to the fact that a new iPhone was going to be coming again (as it has done every year) at WWDC. Right again, theres no incentive for the networks to really offer anything.

With this launch, each of the networks will definetly have a close eye on each other. This is the first big chance for one of the networks to undercut the others.

Looking at O2's launch prices for the 3GS.

IPhone02x535.jpg

It was £45 a month with £90 up front for the 16GB 3GS.

Currently its sitting at £40 a month with £89 up front for the same phone.

I seriously think that one network will offer the new iPhone for £50 on a £45 a month contract and £90 on a £35 a month contract. Dont get me wrong, these prices would be cheap compared to the 3GS current pricing, but the network I reckon who will do it?

Vodafone.

They've recently pulled out charges and data allowances on their current smart phone contracts. 1GB a month and big charges for those who go over it. They can easily make their money back through that. Through tethering as well. It would be a massive income for them there.

Would O2 do it? I doubt it. The exclusivity of the iPhone for the last 3 years has been massive for them. They will have built up a core following from the first iPhone, (even then, if you had been in a 18 month contract for less than 6 months, they were offering to cancel your contract for free if you took the new iPhone), then with the generous pricing for the 3G with the price subsidised. They took the mickey with the 3GS a bit, but they knew they could do it. They were the only network offering the phone (except for a few T-Mobile customers managing to get the 3GS if they stunk up a big enough fuss during retentions (and even at that, it was for the business customers spending £70-£90 a month on their contracts)).

Tesco - Could offer a good deal. More likely to offer the iPhone cheaper than the others if you buy a TV or some rubbish.

Orange - Orange always seem to be right in the middle. They seem to just follow the crowd and none of their deals ever stand out. They dont have many exclusives anymore. O2 are the ones lapping up all the exclusives...Then again, maybe its time for Orange to step up to the plate and offer something out of this world.

3 - Doubt it. This network has so many dropped calls for those on any other kind of phone. Their 3G coverage is superb (when you can actually get it). IIRC, when you cant get a 3G signal, they piggyback on one of the other networks (apologises in advance if im wrong, but im sure I read that somewhere). Not the strongest of the networks, but actually are held in high regard from Ofcom who look upon 3 as a small network who have to be given the chance and not to be stepped upon from the big boys that are O2 and Vodafone.

To summarise, these are my ramblings. One network will steal the show when pre-orders are available.

But every network will be on their toes when it comes to announcing their prices. They need to look at the fact that they have several hundred thousand people who were on 3G contracts with O2 looking to get this new phone. Its a buyers market and the networks will have to remember that!

Lots of good points there HippyHarry. We stand to benefit from some decent competition, not like these sad overcharged guys in the US.

BTW what happens to all the decent phones that O2 Recycle and Mazuma Mobile buy? Mazuma claim to have given out £60 million for old phones and I'd expect to see a flood of second hand phones on sale somewhere.

my last guess is that it will be called the iPhone 4, it won't come in 64GB and the prices for the payngo will be £10-20 more expensive across the board
