Today is the day!! Can't wait!!

Thanks for the suggestions about where else to sell my soon to be old iphone. I'm going to be going to carphonewarehouse to get the phone as I really don't want to trek into town centre and I haven't got an apple store in my town sadly! So I will ask them when I pick it up! :D

Do we think if you purchased a PAYG from Apple it will be network unlocked for all networks seeing how many now carry the phone?

Anyway. I will probably just buy the cheapest PAYG from o2 that way it saves the fuss of having to unlock the phone.

An unlocked sim free phone....No idea, might know in 12 hours time.

I unlocked my O2 PAYG 3GS iPhone last week. It's on Three network now. Cost £15 and was all done legally by Apple/O2.

I get the feeling that there may be a few disappointed people today when it comes to PAYGO and I include myself in that bracket. Having sold my 3GS a week ago I didn't realise how much I would miss my iPhone compared to the crappy nokia I am currently using. But realistically the chances of anything being available by the end of the week are slim and PAYGO is probably weeks away. But fingers crossed :)

Haha brilliant!

I unlocked my 3G and gave it to my Dad when I got my 3GS. He uses it as a orange PAYG and just turns data off. Access's his data at Wi-Fi spots. Theres enough of them nowadays.

I don't see why this launch should be much different to the last launch where PAYG was available at the same time as contract in the Apple store. A lot of people last year were in the middle of a contract and didn't want two of the damned things. Plus the cost of paying off the contract compared to buying on PAYG worked out similar. They know a lot of people are in the same boat this year and they want sales. Myself if I can't get it on PAYG or sim free, I will tell them to stick it and just keep my 3GS. The first time around Apple were new to the phone market and needed to get into it. Hence the big deal with O2. Now al the providers sell them so they don't have the same hold on Apple. Apple wants to sell phones not complicated contracts.

We presume the launch in the UK will be the same time as the US, but we could be waiting a couple of months yet unfortunately.
From a business point of view, it makes sense to stagger the international release due to supply issues.

Ive got 6 months left on my contract... £35 x 6 - £210. According to the Envirophone website they will buy my 16g 3GS for £230. Problem solved, pay off my contact and get a new one :)

Now that most UK networks sell the iPhone I would like Apple to sell the new handset as a sim-free device rather than a PAYG version per network, this would surely make more sense now if paying full rrp for it.

I agree, Apple Stores should have unlocked sim free stock for full RRP instead of just selling on PAYG.

You can then pick a network you like and get them to replace a SIM with a Micro SIM.

The 2G/3G/3GS all launched during a network exclusive period so it was not possible before

well ahead of todays presentation I rung Orange to see my upgrade options for new iPhone and best I was offered to keep close to what I have £30 a month unlim txt they could only offer £5 more a month and 24 month contract so as u can imagine 24 moths it a long time to be tied in so I will be switchin to O2 for their 18 month £30 unlim txts iPhone package.

Just need apple to hurry up with their presentation to see when can preorder lol

supply issues? the 'supply issues' were caused by the 10" IPS displays that could not be produced quick enought for a full international launch of the ipad as first expected. apple spun it so it looks like supply was exceeding demand but they never truly had the stock in the first place.
I read somewhere when you go about 4-5" ips displays they it gets 'tricky' and so the iPhone launch should be fine and a total international release in the same day is what I'm expecting like the 3G and 3Gs

So, I took out an iPhone £35p/m Contract in Jan of 08, though changed to Blackberry halfway through due to some problems. Anyway, my upgrade with O2 was yesterday meaning I can now choose a new handset, or £150 credit blah blah...

Except, that is, with iPhone! If renewing your contract and choosing iPhone, is there really no subsidies anywhere? It's as if buying as a new customer? That seems a bit unfair. Am I just being stupid, or is this really the case?

for the last three releases they have had it launch same time as US (give or take with the time differences) why would this be any different?

o2 are stingy. I know they don't have to let anyone upgrade early by contractual law but if AT&T do it so should o2.

Us UK people already get ripped off as it is!

How do you figure?

Last I checked AT&T had their customers over the barrel. US customers pay $30p/m just for data, which we get free. This is one of the Apple products that we don't get made worse off on.

EDIT: Also, our networks aren't as appalling as AT&T.

i MAY be in line, but i doubt it as i really cant afford one right now :( See how good it is first i guess.

Will you be buying then unlocking a new 4th gen Iphone from O2?

i will be doing this, just hoping O2 will still unlock the new Iphones.

Duck!

How will the pre-ordering work? Would you pre-order from Apple or from the Network provider?

I am currently with Vodafone and for some reason they are not available through the Apple site. However this could change.

Just got off the blower with Orange UK about getting a microSIM delivered so I can switch over on my existing contract. The very nice lady told me that the UK doesn't have a 4G network yet so no UK networks will be carrying the new iPhone for at least a year.

So I asked if it would still work on the existing CDMA networks here, she said yes, but there would be no 4G on it. I told her that the phone I've been using with them for the past 12 months is a 4G phone and that this feature was not new, phones have had it for a while and it hasn't stopped them selling them. She was, however, adamant that nobody in the UK will be selling "the new iPhone 4GS" (wtf?)

It was so hard not to lol down the phone at her. Gotta love call centres...

You have to love people like that.

Funnily enough, I work in Tech Support and I assure you, that I too get extremely naive and silly people on the phone wanting my help!

If this is definitely happening today, has anyone noticed networks or retailers cutting prices on old iPhone 3GS stock yet?

I may be in the market for an Orange Pay as You Go or fully unlocked iPhone 3GS, but the usual prices are really steep.
