But Are They Really Unlocked???
Don't want to start any scaremongering, but I've just had a thought...
AFAIK all iPhones are sold unlocked and always have been - it's just when you insert a network operator's SIM and activate the phone through iTunes that it gets permanently locked to that network.
So it's possible that when Apple say the new phones are being sold unlocked that what they mean is that you have the choice to decide which network you go with - but once you activate it, the phone will become locked.
If you think about it, from a logistics point of view that makes it easy for Apple to deal with sales if they do start offering PAYG phones as they won't have to have stocks of each phone locked to each operator.
So maybe the prices we're seeing ARE the PAYG prices, rather than permanently unlocked prices? I know that everyone's interpreting these prices as being completely unlocked at the moment, but is there anything on the Apple site that would blow my theory out of the water?
In response to the "Are they really unlocked" debate, i have some experience of this with my 3GS
In January I was given a replacement iPhone 3GS at the apple store because my previous "O2 PAYG iPhone 3GS" was faulty.
I never restored/wipe the phone until a week ago, as I was selling it to a new owner.
At this point I didnt have an O2 iPhone sim card in my iPhone, I had a simplicity 30 day non iphone plan.
Once the iPhone was fully restored, it gave me a message that I had an unauthorised sim which couldnt activate my iPhone!!!!
I then tried other sim cards, and my partners Orange iPhone managed to activate the phone...I then tried my O2 sim again, and tried my friends O2 iphone contract sim and both didnt work....the iPhone was now locked to Orange and Orange only!
I went to the apple store and sat there for an hour while they tried to figure out what was going on. It's lucky i bought my receipts to prove I originally bought the phone locked to O2, as they seemed very suspicious of me
They sent me away with my phone promising me that they will give me a call once they had spoken to the networksThat was on Friday, I have heard nothing from them...
Ive come to realise that all new of Apples iPhone's actually come with one time temporary unlocked, until activated with your carrier of choice.
Once activated with that carrier it becomes locked...The refurbished phone they gave me wasnt properly activated to O2, so when I put in the Orange sim it locked to that network.
So to summarize, I HOPE "SIM FREE" DOESNT MEAN IT LOCKS TO THE FIRST NETWORK YOU CHOOSE!!!
