Ok this is what i was told of the O2 sales department.

In regards to the insurance you pay now, this can be transferred over to the new iPhone 4 at the same price you pay now (for me it is £7.50 a month) because it is just carrying on with a existing insurance plan and not a new one (think new ones are around £15 a month now)

I don't have to get my mobile direct with O2. I can still get my sim-free unlocked iPhone 4 from Apple, phone them up and tell them and they will then send out me a micro-sim with that will keep my Simplicity plan that i am currently on. I will also still have my phone insured with them as it is the phone that the sim goes into that is insured but would just tell them that i no longer have iPhone 3G and that it is iPhone 4.

Also confirmed and this is what i am going to do:-
Get simplicity plan £20 a month 600mins (£15 if am tight n go for 300mins), Unlimited data, Unlimited txts (before 24th June)
Then get iPhone 4 sim free from Apple (wanted white but may have to settle for the finger print showing but less contrasting screen of the black) for £599 from Apple.
Also will be insured for just £7.50 a month

Hmmm guess my dilema on White n Black may have been decided for me in order to get the best deal.....though when someone says i cant have summat usually makes me want it more lol (also guessing 32gb is best way to go)

I used to have O2's insurance. It cost me £7.50 a month. When I updated to 3GS. They whacked it up to £15 a month.

It paid for itself when I dropped my 3GS in a car park and shattered the screen. I was even happier when they delivered the replacement next day and it was a retail unit not a refurb.

That's a very good question. £600 is a lot of money to lose as a result of a mishap.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable policy?

Student here, I'm planning on adding mobile phone insurance to my Endsleigh cover when I move back to uni in September.

Adding it to my insurance will cost £40 for the year and covers the full cost of the handset for accidental damage, theft and loss +£150 airtime. £50 excess

Just a quick question I'm hoping someone can answer. I'm still in a 3Gs contract with o2. Shall I just buy the iPhone 4 unlocked from Apple and order a new sim card from o2 to fit it, staying in the same contract, or do I pay the contract off and get a new contract with orange or someone else..

Will the o2 pay and go iPhone 4 be cheaper then the unlocked iPhone 4. :D

I'm in the same boat as you and going down the PAYGo route. This time next year we will be both on simplicity and eligible for a natural upgrade if we wish.

6 months left on O2 monthly

Apologies if this has been asked before-200 pages is a lot to search through...

I got a 3gs on launch day and so have 6 months left on my monthly contract. I managed to reserve an iphone4 at regent street-can I collect it sim free, cut my existing sim, and put it in without telling o2? would this mean I could use the remaining 6 months with my new phone? Or should I tell them and get a microsim sent out-would this mean my contract conditions might change?

Any thoughts appreciated...

So to summarize, I HOPE "SIM FREE" DOESNT MEAN IT LOCKS TO THE FIRST NETWORK YOU CHOOSE!!!
The FAQs on the UK Apple store say:

Do I need to commit to a long-term contract for my iPhone?

Buying a SIM-free iPhone from the Apple Online Store allows you choose your own carrier and change carriers at any time. (my italics).

Also:

Can I use my iPhone outside my home country?

Yes. iPhone is enabled to work on carrier networks using GSM around the world. Because the iPhone sold by the Apple Online Store is SIM-free, you can purchase a SIM or micro-SIM card and service from a local carrier at your destination. (my emphasis again).

To me these seem fairly clear statements that the phone should not lock to the network it is activated on. Maybe the previous PAYG handsets, which were intended to be carrier locked, behave differently?

Yes you could do that.

Cut your sim or get O2 to send you one.

Getting a microsim won't change your conditions. o2 have said they will give microsims to those who want to continue existing contracts. Check their Twitter feed.

If they won't send you a replacement sim just cut down your existing sim. It will work in your iPhone 4 and you can see out the rest of your contract without penalty or further commitment.

Can anyone tell me what the point in applecare is ? It doesn't cover accidental damage and if something goes wrong in the first year, i can have it fixed/replaced for free anyway because of the 1 year standard warranty.

I understand it provides fixes/replacements when you're 1 year is over but i will no doubt be selling the iphone 4 next june to make way for the iphone 5 so i don't need 2/3 year cover.

So...why buy applecare ?

Its getting a bit ridiculous now with all the networks not releasing any information. I phoned just now to order a MicroSIM from O2 for the iPhone I ordered earlier, although the customer service rep was very friendly (miles better than what I used to get from 3). They had been told no information other than check the website.

They website says they may send me a MicroSIM, that doesn't give me much confidence that I will definitely have one on 24th June. (I know I can cut mine down but I don't particularly want to especially as mine has one of the chips on the larger size rather than the smaller ones.)

My plan originally was to get it on PAYG on O2 and then get my contract moved onto the SIM that came with it but as Apple are selling them SIM free thats the option I went for but now I am not getting a MicroSIM with it. The customer service rep did go through to the networks team and ask them for me and they said sign up online and they will send me one, but if thats the case why not change the wording on the site from may.

If they actually released the information people wanted they would be getting less calls.

For you there is little reason to. Unless you wanted to sell the phone with the extra year's warranty to boost the price. It would also give you access to free telephone support beyond the 90 days you get as standard.

Sorry if this is has been asked before, but forgive me...it is quite a large thread.

So I've reserved a 16GB iPhone 4 for use on O2's PAYG, to pick up on the 24th. I want to use the £15 PAYG simplicity tariff which will give me unlimited texts/unlimited web + 100 minutes a month. Will i get a microsim when i pick up the iPhone at the apple store? I recently asked o2 to send me out a normal sim so that i can sign up for simplicity on that then have it transfered to the microsim on the 24th. will apple do this? or will i be better just using the new sim i get at the apple shop on the day? If i do this, will i be able to switch to simplicity on the day or will have to wait a month till my next anniversary date?

thanks!

So...why buy applecare ?

It extends the manufacturer's warranty by a year.

Even if you don't need a second year yourself, in my experience you will get a much higher price for your second hand iPhone if you can advertise and sell it with a significant period of Applecare to run. It gives a purchaser peace of mind.

Like many people I kept my 3G for 2 years from launch and plan to do the same with iPhone 4, so Applecare extends the benefits you outlined for the first year for a further year for a total of two. If you only plan to keep iPhone 4 for 1 year then it won't be of benefit to you.

However if you were to get it it'd probably increase the resale value in a years time as the prospective buyer would have 12 month guarantee provided by Apple.

Still no requirement to buy it if it doesn't fit your anticipated usage. For those of us it does, or even worse have had to make use of Applecare in the past, it's A Good Thing.

Ring the Apple store in question!

I'm in the exact situation and hoping for O2 to send me the micro sim in the post, then walk away from Apple store ready to go
Just wish O2 would hurry up

Re cutting normal sim cards down - what tools are people using? A stanley knife?
I've requested a microsim but may not want to wait.
