What about people who are going to be buying from Apple? My o2 contract doesn't run out until 31st Jan and I want to continue using the same contract. Will they send me a micro sim even if I'm not getting the iPhone from o2?

You could buy an O2 PAYG one with a sim, or if you've preordered i reckon if you go down the o2 shop they'll have some that they can give you then just go through that webpage. It's also always possible that they'll post you one before... we live in hope!

I've seen a few people reporting that their question to T-Mobile about getting a micro SIM gets the answer "what's a micro-SIM?". Has anyone got past that stage and got any sort of more interesting answer?

I think I'm going to go with Orange PAYG, provided that I can convince myself that the 250MB cap will be OK for my usage. My preferred fallback plan is to keep using my existing T-Mobile PAYG account in an unlocked iPhone but I'd prefer to get an official micro-SIM card rather than cutting down my existing card.

You'll remember that when placing reservations you were asked whether it was sim-free, Pay Monthly or Pay As You Go ...

I had a nice long chat with someone at the Apple Store Trafford Centre yesterday (he called me - go figure!) and asked about the difference between sim-free and PAYG. Aside from the obvious, he said that PAYG would be activated in-store which means they'll be provided with a sim-card.

Shouldn't be too hard then to get O2 to swap my contract onto the newly provided sim. It just means foregoing the unlocking (possibly).

well.. when you register for interest, it does say they *may* send a micro sim out... but i'm a bit dubious about it arriving on the 24th.

24th my iphone 4 will arrive... and i *might* have a sim to put in it, which is pretty crap to be honest...

Said it yourself.....

"Option 2: Buy the iPhone 4 on Pay & Go.

If you don't want to upgrade to a new iPhone on a Pay Monthly contract, you can buy an iPhone 4 on Pay & Go. Remember you'll need to continue to pay for your existing Pay Monthly contract.

If you are going to use your existing Pay Monthly sim in iPhone 4, please ensure you Contact Us to transfer to an iPhone tariff if you are not already on one. Or you can use the Pay & Go Text & Web sim you will be provided with.

Pay Monthly customers with O2 Insure can move their new Pay & Go iPhone onto their existing O2 Insure policy. Just give us a call within the first 3 days of purchase to let us know."

I doubt they would allow you to do this and NOT give you a microsim. Probably a case of call centre staff not knowing what they're talking about as usual."

I am already on one, so I just need a microsim.

What are you on about? You don't know that, I highly highly doubt that would happen. Also why are you so reluctant to simply cut a regular sim to a micro sim size. Even if you mess it up you can request a new one and you WON'T loose your existing number.

Personally I'd much rather piss about cutting a sim up than waiting ages for a carrier to release a micro sim.

I started the sentence "lets wait and see." Based on the network actions so far, their new policy regarding data. I would guess that the 3% of users that are upsetting them with regards data use, will be the people who cut up sims - so who they going to target. Disagree with my opinion if you wish, but you can't deny me it.

Here's a question I haven't seen addressed yet. Are contract/subsidized phones unlocked? The website implies it's just PAYG phones, but, Yes! Just spoke to the apple store helpline who confirmed it. All iPhones sold in the UK.will be unlocked for international travel/taking advantage of orange Wednesdays despite being a Vodafone customer. :D

US phones will still be locked though. Should help the resale value out quite a lot.

For what it's worth I agree with you, you have sone quite demanding usage there and I suspect that for you 250MB will be too little.

- Julian

And what's a little bit upsetting is that for 10/11 out of 12 months, I'm probably well under 500mb. My 'heavy' use comes intermittently and never for prolonged periods of time. If O2 kept the 500mb FUP and applied it across 12 months "free" (like Orange do with their 250mb), I would probably have stayed.

called local o2 store in Slough yesterday who told me they are opening 8am on 24/6 and will have micro-sims available in store. i'm happy to cut my sim down but for those who can't your local store may just pass you one...

ps - i've ordered a free iPad sim via o2 which they claim may take 14 days to get here. if it gets here pretty soon, i will have an exact template according to which i can cut my iP4 sim.

if not i am sure i will still be ok - it looks pretty easy i reckon and any half-decent pairs of scissors will cut through a sim very easily...i know cos i have already tried practising on a defunct sim :)

are you sure all UK handsets will be unlocked? thought the apple site meant the sim free ones were unlocked?

And for those of us purchasing from Apple?!

Good question!

Possibly it’s okay to do what g33 was told (i.e. to pick one up from a shop). O2 is saying that it’s sending out microsims to people to pre-registered an interest – if this is the case, then it’s not too discerning who it’s sending them out to (i.e. not confirming that you will be buying one from O2), then I don’t think O2 will be too stingy in giving them away elsewhere.

With the reserve option, there were three options, one of which was PAYG, and so that should have the appropriate sim (which you’ve just confirmed! Cheers!!).

Rather interestingly, I cannot see anywhere on the Orange website about "topping up" this 250mb to a more reasonable limit. What happens when this limit is reached or exceeded?

If I could train myself to live under the limits (I know my better half would be able to stick to under 250mb without a problem) and occasionally pay the extra where needed, Orange may have won itself another customer :)

However all this is rather academic and speculative considering that Three, Vodafone and T-Mobile haven't announced their prices or availability yet. (Neith

Quite bizarrely, despite being due an upgrade since February, eagerly waiting for the iPhone 4, following every development, registering for updates from all carriers, and then reserving one at the Apple Store, I have woken up this morning with a slight case of:

"Why the hell am I even thinking of spending such a daft about of money on a phone!"

I'm currently looking at cheap handsets to buy outright and have on a monthly contract.

Someone bring me back around please!

Edit: Image removed due to it being gigantic and stretching the forum, sorry!
Go and look here http://www.apple.com/iphone/design/

Mmmmmmmm shinyyyyyyyyyyyy :p

I phoned the apple store helpline and asked. 08000480408 if you want to do the same. I asked specifically will subsidised phones by unlocked like PAYG. He was very sure of his answer and said yes, they got lots of complaints about international roaming etc and they are now all unlocked. I guess the less reason to jailbreak the better?
The reason the states does not get this? The only fully compatible carrier is ATT ( t-mob is edge only), so it's not seen as much of an issue.

thats cool if it is true, jailbraking has some good points :p

it would be rather annoying to have a shiny new iphone4 sitting on your lap on 24th june and no sim card to put in it.....

and if all UK phones are unlocked then apple are charging a small premium over Orange (only one to be announced) who are charging £20 less for a pay and go which is supposedly unlocked...
